Running hills (xc/terrain) 1:17:35 [3] 7.9 km (9:49 / km) +780m 6:34 / km

Hills route with extension...
1. 36:15 (18:00, 18:15)
2. 35:45 (17:55, 17:50)

Robin didn't turn up but I stayed true to the task and went for the 2 laps PB attempt anyway. The weather was mild and I hydrated well for it, a little stiffness in the legs from yesterday's trail running but it certainly wasn't restrictive. Had a bit too much energy left over the last 20 minutes which resulted in a fairly significant negative split but so hard to pace this sort of session plus took 75 seconds off the previous best from last Summer anyway. Result.

The knee didn't do so well today. Over the last 15 minutes there was a significant reduction in left-leg coordination and the pain was gradually increasing. I'm actually going to take that as a positive however as the pain was definitely coming from the tension band where the wires are twisted together on the RH side. Just like before the big setback in May I'm feeling it more and more there as I get fitter and faster. That makes it much easier to go down the hospital tomorrow and let them open the knee up again, it obviously needs to be taken out.

So I'm hoping this will be the beginning of the end of taking painkillers. For the last few weeks I've been taking 500mg naproxen morning and evening, prescribed with the hope that I won't need so much of the harder stuff. I can't say it has worked that well in that respect, I remember coming back from the event on the 25th Aug and almost needing to stop and let someone else drive. It may however have helped with my LH side generally, otherwise a pretty massive coincidence that my glute/groin/hamstring just happened to start working better at the same time I was started on the course of NSAIDs.

Sure one starts to understand why one hears stories about athletes dropping NSAIDs like multivitamins but of course this is not sustainable. For example other observations made since include my rest/avg/max HR having been regularly lower than usual, not good! An interesting experiment however as it points towards inflammation being the LH-side problem.

Running (road/xc) 58:10 [3] 11.0 km (5:17 / km)
ahr:148 max:169 rhr:47 weight:88kg shoes: walsh pb trainer

(14.5, 58.7, 43.9, 14.3)

Medium trail route, reverse direction.

Felt quite clunky to start with but it got better once off the road and onto the trails. Enjoyed myself after that and changed my short-medium plans, switched onto the hillier, 11km route and finished strongly. A little too strongly considering I have a lunch hill session planned with ultrarunner Robin tomorrow, nevermind.

This was definitely the fastest on this route since the accident, no debate this time. Only 0:25 mins/km down on PB pace which is pretty crazy considering the fact that I was basically jogging the first 15 minutes plus how many pies I've eaten recently. I'm really trying to resist the temptation to wonder however if it's easier in reverse? I mean I know there can't be like less climb seeing as the start/finish is in the same place but I dunno, like less technical downhills when going anti-clockwise or something like that? In a very weird way part of me wants it to be easier, feels like cheating.

Knee coping really well with the downhills now, like pretty much normal.
