Abel Tasman day5. An ok night sleep although onefidgety pair in our room and many early risers all around. Most people were heading north so wanted to get across to Torrent Bay on the 6:30 low tide… we in the other hand set off southwards after 10. There was a spring insteps today. There was less climb and focus on getting to the finish. Snacked and swam at Apple Tree bay and good cafe right on the finish of the walk was appreciated. Everyone did well!

Abel Tasman day 3. Set off in misty rain. Stopped for a game of chess after 300m as the mood was not great. Wet boots and tired children… the game did not help much but was a brief distraction. We stopped for lunch at Onahuti beach and we’re able to take off rain gear, and the. The sun came out! It was a slog from there to Bark Bay including quite a few new sharp climbs where the track had to deviate over recent land slips. We took the high tide route to the campsite which was an along way and probably not necessary. This was the toughest day for all. Then the big black cloud and wind whipped up just as we were setting up the tent. Girls slept and read while Eoin and I explored the beach/inlet. Quick swim for me. Fancy Radix brand dinner had reasonable taste but awful texture. Won’t buy again. Wind dropped and rain cleared for the evening which helped us to fit in the tent. 4 man tent for 4 of us was cosy! Wekas tried to steal stuff from bags all night long…

Abel Tasman day 2.
Well now we know why there were plenty of spare beds in our room, the other couple snored loud enough and continuously enough for all of us. Not much sleep had. And then they had the hide to explain to us how it had been raining since 6am and everyone else had been up since then over our late breakfast. I am pretty sure the only sleep I got was after they got up! Anyway, this was a very long and very wet day. Continual rain from the outset. Not heavy but wet and steady. We had a lunch stop at Totaranui where I took the easy option out by checking to see whether there was space at the Awaroa lodge, 3 km further than our booked hit. We went for that extortionate option and we’re grateful after looking at the number of people and wet things crammed into the hut. Very expensive dinner was a huge disappointment for the girls who just wanted some hot chips. And maybe bacon. We had a good nights’ sleep and managed to dry some clothes if not boots.

Abel Tasman day 1. Got the aqua taxi to Totaranui, planning to hike over Gibbs Hill to Wharwharangi Hut. The driver suggested we take the coast track today instead to see the views before forecast rain. It was a helpful piece of advice. Great walk, lunch at Anapai Bay, swim at Mutton Cove. Some unexpected steep sections that we nothing compared to future days! Non-dehydrated dinner was heavy but yum. Packs started with 16kg for me, 13kg Eoin, 14kg Lily and 11kg Aoife.
