Kayak 1:30:00 [3] 16.0 km (5:38 / km)
King of the Harbour race from Fisherman's to Manly Wharf in through the heads. Seabreeze was promising a nice stiff Nor' Easter, and grandpa was available for a car shuffle, so hoiked the boat on the roof and headed down to the beach once baseball umpiring duties were over.
Main purpose of the exercise was (a) to get some ocean time & (b) get flogged by real paddlers, and thereby motivated to train a bit for the 20 Beaches at Xmas. Success on both counts.
Got caught by the ol' kayak start trap - starter gave up trying to settle the field and fired the gun earlier than the 10minute warning gun said he should. Sprinted through the traffic and in to clear water after a few hundred metres. Unfortunately, the arms were f*cked by then - plodding along for hours at AR speed, and ski sprinting are very different beasts.
Enjoyable run from the reef down to North Head - the straight line takes you a few km offshore and hence in to clean swells. Felt I was doing OK on the runs, but the relative progress of my fellow punters hinted that wasn't quite true - work to do. Highlight was meeting a maxi yacht race coming the other way - they werent very happy about having to give way to a swarm of skis out there.
Bit of cliff bounce in thru' the heads, but not too bad and then an unwelcome headwind for the last couple of k in to the wharf. Acceptably tired at the end - fun.
