Orienteering (Paddy Pallin Rogaine) 5:54:00 [3]

Paddy Pallin rogaine with Glenn Horrocks at Clandulla (north of Lithgow) in Pagoda country.

Was keen to get to this one when I saw that Rob Vincent was organising it. Sure enough, the hunch was right. No bashing around in vague scrub looking for shallow gullies with topo maps here. The map was effectively a 1:20,000 orienteering map complete with complex (and accurate) pagoda rock detail, tricky controls and very little track running. ie. 6hr orienteering course in great terrain.

The course was basically in 3 sections i) a fast running gully spur area to the north, ii) a steep gully in the middle and iii) lots of pagoda rock detail to the south. Our plan was to head north to pick off the running section early while the legs were fresh, come back down the map thru the steep gully and then in to the detail with plenty of bail-out options at the end.

The problem with running an orienteering-type course was forgetting that it is in fact 6 hours and heading off at 'O' speed. Ripped thru' the first 3rd of the course in good time, before being slowed by the steep gully after an hour and a half. [Sidenote: Met a Quoll in here - very cool].

Decided that the 'mid' section of the course wouldn't be good value, so bailed on 4 checkpoints that would require crossing the big gully a couple of times and snuck down the side of the map to the Pagodas. Navigating pretty well until 3 hours when a lapse of concentration meant we overran a cliff gap by 200m and dropped in to a gully late. Because the gully was thick it was slow to get back, and it cost about 15minutes. Doh.

Started to feel crap just after 3 hours and suffered until 4:30 - headache and blah feeling - and was starting to wonder if post-Geo was going to make the second half of the day tough going. But patience and food seemed to do the trick, and came good for the last hour and a half - feeling quite good at the end.

Reshaped the route a bit and arrived home with a nicely timed 5:54:00 with the last section thru' the Pagodas. Had been looking to do a short loop of 10 pointers at the end, but Glenn was shagged by then. Close finish in the end with 2090 points (out of 2400) - same score as Dave and Julie but 3 minutes ahead - and Phil Whitten & co. 10 points behind. Lucky that running speed was just enough to offset the mistakes of the day (would have missed 25min all up, most of which the overshoot).

Enjoyed running with Glenn and nav'd well together. Was nice to have the stronger legs for once after being consistently flogged by Glen in Summer Series the last couple of years. :-)

Great day out. Fun to see Dad's name on the trophy from the 70's. Plenty of Preston and Hill around the base row of name plates, with a smattering of FatRat and Meyer to complement.
