(rest day)

Wow, what an awesome week: ride, eat, sleep, repeat x5!! We were so well looked after all week and the organisation was top notch - really didn't need to think about anything but follow the signs to the next bit of food! The weather was spectacular which really was the cherry on top of the fabulous cake :-)
Surprised at how well I got through this week - much better than I was expecting. Certainly feeling it by the last day and leg muscles were a bit sore but they were still strong.

The aim all week has been to raise money for the Prince's Trust - all donations gratefully received: http://www.sponsorme.co.uk/chrisgodfree/london-to-...

Carlisle to Edinburgh. I was feeling a lot better than I expected today but was looking forward to getting finished. We missed the rain but the roads were wet and the lanes pretty sh*tty again. Set out in the same group as usual but various lights and long level crossing stop meant we got a lot of extra people and a few of them wanted to get the front and ride hard so it was all a bit messy. Managed to split things up with a quick stop again and then the highlight of the week for me: the Devils Beeftub. I've been wanting to ride it for a while but it always seems just a bit too far from Edinburgh. I sat out the front of the group, rode fairly hard into the wind all the way up and absolutely loved it!! Just the sort of hill climb I like - a constant, not too steep gradient. Then it was downhill (into the wind) to Broughton for the second stop which was actually in Biggar - oops. Things got a bit tough after that: wind and lots of small hills and whilst not exactly suffering, I was finding it tough going. We finally got a tailwind for the run into the finish - great way to finish the week.

Accrington to Carlisle: the first of two big days to finish off the week: Forest of Bowland and the Lakes. It was misty to start the day so really quite pleasant but we missed the views. Again, short, sharp climbs which I generally took easily but one good long one where I put in some more effort. Also had the first crash in the group when Will out his back wheel in a ditch and also took out Steve - lucky to miss it! We caught another group on the long climb and it all got a bit messy on the way into the first stop - people sprinting up hills and desperate to be at the front. A quick stop sorted this out and back to the usual group of 6. We worked well into The Lakes and it was good to get on familiar roads again - shame this was Kirkstone Pass though!! Rode it with Marty and just kept things steady. We got a clear descent down the flew along to the second stop at Glenridding. The fruit cake was superb and must have had something special in it as I was leading the pack up Matterdale and to the A66 :-) It was then a straight, downhill run into Carlisle which I was hoping would be easy but Steve started to smash it so it harder than I was hoping my great fun!

Tean to Accrington. Tough, tough start to the day with lots of steep hills and small, sh*tty lanes. I was pretty much on the back the whole time: keeping my pace on the hills but able to catch the group relatively easily on the downs/flats. Dropping down towards Manchester we had the first p*ncture of the week for our group and then my rear derailleur stopped shifting so I was with two gears: hard and really hard :-( Manchester wasn't great to cycle through (very stop start) and it was getting hot but the mechanics sorted my gears, phew :-) Out of Manchester and more hills but generally a few longer ones which I dealt with a lot better. Hamish had a tyre blow out which we fixed with a gel wrapper only for it to blow out again - an eventful day!

Canons Ashby to Tean: heading out with the same group of guys as yesterday and Andy Kitchin. We had another group tagged on the back until the first stop but we were off much quicker and I was happier in a smaller group. It was getting warm today and I wasn't looking forward to the Cannock Chase hills but got through them well - just taking things easier to save the legs again. Good to see some familiar names and roads from the past.

London to Canons Ashby. Getting out of London wasn't as bad as I thought it would be and, having dropped the RBS Chief Exec, I rode with a couple of guys who knew where we going. Crossing the A1 after 30km, we caught some more guys and got a reasonable group going, even if some of the 'riding in a group' skills were lacking in a few places!! Pretty relaxed ride really although I was dropping off a little on a couple of steeper climbs hoping to save the legs for later in the week.
