Off Road Biking (Sparky) 15:00 [3] 4.0 km (16.0 kph)
shoes: Specialized Comp MTB

Trying to wake he body up. Feeling tired last night and this morning especially with an early start. A bit of a negative frame of mind and expected to struggle physically.

Off Road Biking race (Sparky) 1:09:59 [5] 20.3 km (17.4 kph) +400m
shoes: Specialized Comp MTB

MTBO middle - 3rd again but only 1min behind Ali and 30s behind Steve Hale.

Somehow lost a minute to the first control with a steady start and missing the turn off the dam (update: wrong way round the loch) but then splits look good and fatigue forgotten about :-) Bad route on 5 when I thought the next control was 12 - oops. Careful checking of the one way track direction for 7. Almost took the best route to 12 (through the middle) but went left round the road to have a navigational rest. Rode the descent to 16/17 well (for me) but wimped out of the single track to 18 and Steve took a minute out of me. Finally got a fastest to 19 (a little local knowledge helped).

Very happy with today and especially how I was riding given pre race tiredness. Even could have won wihich is surprising given my MTBO experience!

Off Road Biking race (Sparky) 2:07:33 [5] 42.2 km (19.9 kph) +330m

MTBO Long - Devilla. 3rd place :-)
Happy with that and a much better race today. Enjoyed the fire roads with plenty of time to read the map and plan ahead but struggled a little more on the techy stuff. A couple of silly mistakes today - taking the wrong grassy path on 8 (which lots of people seemed to do too) and turning one path too early on 13. Caught Ali Powell a couple of mins at 9, he got ahead on route choice to 12 and then I was chasing hard and seeing him on lots of in and outs so knew if was going to end up close. Feeling the pace in the last 30mins (rather unused to racing!) but still riding strongly. Glasses got a few sweaty streaks which made map reading tricky so had to stop a few times to check things, especially the last control.

First time in 20 years and first ride in bifocals! A few silly mistakes and not planning ahead at the start but reasonably happy with it overall.
