Oh well, it wasn't to be. I knew that I needed to have an absolutely clean run to hang on to my 2nd place overall but, due to the split arena, by the time I got to the start I'd already walked >10km, climbed nearly 300m, and my brain was a dehydrated husk. I held it together for controls 1 and 2 but sloppily followed an elephant track out of 2, panicked, and threw away nearly 2 minutes on the relatively easy #3. I gave myself a good mental slap then, was slow to #4, but was then OK until another 40-60s blip to #10 when the Finish was in sight.

So - 3rd place today, one bad control away from 1st, and overall I slipped from 2nd to 3rd. Such is the game. But what an excellent game it is. After a shakey start at Auchingarrich, I've been really pleased by how consistent my orienteering has been, having been there or thereabouts with an orienteer I greatly admire, Sarah Dunn, on most days. I've also been very surprised that my crocked back has stood up to six days of tough but rewarding exercise. And, above all, I've had a whale of a time working with a wonderful team in the IT tent every day - it has been an absolute delight. What a smashing week.
