VHI Individals at North Pentland Hills, running up on the M35 (Brown) course - 8.5km +390m.
Another fail. 0 for 2 this weekend. I started well, plodding steading along, and was gratified that it took until the 6.5km mark for my 10-minute man, spring chicken Steve F, to catch me up. Lack of training caught me up on the way to #10, about 8km, though, and I started going backwards. Keen to cut a corner I found myself trapped in unmapped grot and lost 5 minutes on the way to #11. By then I was in zombie limp-home mode, and fell victim to my recurring mistake of missing out a control - #13 - in the middle of a straight line, from #12 to #14. I ran right past it and even saw someone at it. No light came on in my brain to say that I had to punch there. It was only when I finished and was chatting to Ben that realisation dawned. Gutted. All that way and all that effort only to mispunch 400m from the Finish.
I need to come up with a strategy to stop making this mistake. And I didn't deserve to wear the Irish vest this weekend.
