Orienteering race 1:44:51 [3] **** 12.08 km (8:41 / km) +315m 7:41 / km
ahr:141 max:159 shoes: Jalas Black FLX

Partly sh*te.

National Event, Brown Clee - M35L, 10.3km +230m.
Set off just hoping to get round, and I did, albeit slowly. This event we started at the north end of the map, straight into the dodgily mapped intricate slope S and E of the main hill top, which I remembered from JK05. I was ultra-cautious through the 8 controls here, and didn't really slip up too badly anywhere - just 30s here or there. On the longer leg to 9 I jarred my bad ankle in the tussocks and things slowed down from then on. A bit of grotty forest with lots of windblow, causing a 2 min backtrack/diversion, then out onto the ominous newly-mapped moorland. Memories of the thick heather in the previously mapped area there were not encouraging, but the new bit turned out be pretty runnable (joggable). At least until the course went into the aforementioned heathery bit, yuk. I was tiring by this stage, and missed the pit in the heather and the bingo pit in the heavily brashed area immediately afterwards. After that it was pretty boring, which must have been bad if I noticed how boring it was! I was just pottering by then. Still, I got around. Well dehydrated by the end.

Orienteering race (Sprint-O) 21:43 [5] ***** 4.75 km (4:34 / km) +65m 4:17 / km
ahr:170 max:179 shoes: Asics Gel-Trail Attack WR

Utter sh*te.

WOC Selection Sprint Race, Shrewsbury - 2.9km +50m.
Rosco may have thought that he was bad - but at least he wasn't bad AND dog slow. I was an ar*e. Slow decision making, 5 mistakes (one howler), and I wasn't even running fast enough; useless. Curiously it was LESS complicated than I thought it was going to be - Not many complications due to covered bits, different levels, etc., which I thought that Shrewsbury would have a lot of; not as complex as Stirling and nothing like Edinburgh.

Orienteering race 1:07:26 [4] **** 7.69 km (8:46 / km) +245m 7:34 / km
ahr:151 max:167 shoes: Jalas Black FLX

Mostly sh*te.

WOC Selection Middle Distance, West Heath - 6.1km.
The middle distance race was certainly on an interesting map - shame the area was so heavily covered in thick, tall bracken. Much as I was grateful for the efforts of the organisers to cut rough paths through the bracken to make the area actually usable, I'm not sure that it was all that fair: if you were lucky enough to choose a route that coincided with a cut path you were quids in, if not you were in hell. Sadly I often found myself in the latter position.
I deliberately jogged rather than run hard to try to concentrate on actually navigating correctly, but this wasn't really the area for it; you really had to attack the terrain to get anywhere. As it was I made three or four mistakes costing, say, 8 minutes, and was running very slowly by the end; my L hamstring was giving me gip. Tim Tett and I were hobbling down the long track run in at roughly the same crawl pace.
Great run from Jase.

Running 39:32 intensity: (30:00 @2) + (9:32 @3) 7.6 km (5:12 / km) +210m 4:34 / km
ahr:145 max:160 shoes: Asics Gel-Trail Attack WR

Still with the remnants of a head cold, but feeling so stuffy from being in the house hunched in front of a computer for ages that I dragged myself out for some fresh air. And I'm glad I did: after the first 10 mins I started to feel human, and after 25 mins I was positively full of the joys of life. Work has been pretty high-stress of late. Sometimes nothing is better at making you relax than just letting your feet find the path in front of you.

Cycling (Road) 1:05:00 [2] 25.5 km (23.5 kph) +135m
ahr:127 max:156 shoes: SPDs

Commute - got off the train one stop early, at Polmont, for a longer but less hilly option. Unfortunately even the short mile along the A801 through Avon Gorge was too long - several times, if I'd been timing it right, I'd have been able to poke a passenger in a passing car in the eye. Gits. Anyway, a pleasant enough cycle apart from that, and spending about 5 mins in Bathgate failing to find Route 75 to Livingston, only to come across it after I'd given up. Signage for cycle network paths is so patchy... grump grump.

Cycling (Road) 45:15 intensity: (30:00 @2) + (15:15 @3) 17.73 km (23.5 kph) +175m
ahr:128 max:153 shoes: SPDs

The commute from Livi to Linlithgow after work, over Cairnpapple. Hm. My legs were completely gone - this was a very slow trundle indeed; particularly the first 6 miles, which are all uphill. My best time for this route is 40 mins! Oh well - it was just a recovery cycle. I finally worked out what the dreadful squeak has been on Bertha in the last couple of rides. The back wheel was so askew that it was rubbing on the frame... whoops. I'm really not very good with mechanical things :-)
