If ever there was a reminder that I am, in fact, only a punter in this sport, and only ever will be, today was it. I'd sensibly opted to run the short course, and, given the tweakiness in my lower back, it seemed a sensible choice; I was fair rattling with pills when I set off. That said, I quickly got into my stride and was hitting the controls well; in the lead by 2 mins at #6, after only 16:23 running. And then the wheels came off in spectacular fashion.
I'd hesistate to call the 40 minutes I spent on the sub-15 minute leg #7 a schoolboy error. Even pre-school boys can count, which is what I summarily failed to do with tracks. I just switched off and miscounted, and couldn't make anything fit. When I finally realised that I was attempting to relocate on the wrong track, having been in entirely the wrong block, I could scarely believe the magnitude of the error, so much so that I even c*cked up the second attempt. By the time I eventually found it I was somewhat dispirited, my motivation and speed commensurately depressed. I was still - just - fastest home from #7, but the 25+ minutes of damage was done, and I had blown it big style. Quite amazingly poor.
Positives: I can still walk. OK, so I'm still on mega pills and I may not be walking tomorrow morning, but I'll take what I can get.
9.2km on a 5.7km course! Un-be-lievable.

Middle on Culbin West: Blue, 4.6km. Bit of an unknown, given the parlous state of my back, but I loaded up with pills and felt surprisingly sprightly. Kept things sensible, but thoroughly enjoyed the course and the area. No long legs to tempt a concentration lapse, so I only had one (ca. 80s) mistake on #9. Otherwise, very happy, and I was still able to touch my toes afterwards, so I think I got away with it. TRIMP 138
