S6D6: Grandtully. M45S.
Oh well, it wasn't to be. I knew that I needed to have an absolutely clean run to hang on to my 2nd place overall but, due to the split arena, by the time I got to the start I'd already walked >10km, climbed nearly 300m, and my brain was a dehydrated husk. I held it together for controls 1 and 2 but sloppily followed an elephant track out of 2, panicked, and threw away nearly 2 minutes on the relatively easy #3. I gave myself a good mental slap then, was slow to #4, but was then OK until another 40-60s blip to #10 when the Finish was in sight.

So - 3rd place today, one bad control away from 1st, and overall I slipped from 2nd to 3rd. Such is the game. But what an excellent game it is. After a shakey start at Auchingarrich, I've been really pleased by how consistent my orienteering has been, having been there or thereabouts with an orienteer I greatly admire, Sarah Dunn, on most days. I've also been very surprised that my crocked back has stood up to six days of tough but rewarding exercise. And, above all, I've had a whale of a time working with a wonderful team in the IT tent every day - it has been an absolute delight. What a smashing week.

S6D5, Craig a Barns, M45S. 3rd, 25s down on Fraser in 2nd but 5 mins off the flying US guy who won Edinchip. 2nd in the overall results, equal points with him but one less win, and Fraser ominously just 1pt behind in 3rd!
CaB was as hard as nails as ever, and I didn't have the legs for it today - lack of fitness was the deciding factor. My only real mistake was to go straight on the long leg; I got a bit stuck in the middle, and would also have saved a couple of minutes by dropping down to the track much earlier. Otherwise, I just wasn't moving fast enough. I can hardly complain, though, and loved it out there.

Jogged to the start - or, at least, to the bottom of the hill!

S6D4: Culteuchar & Dron, M45S.
Very surprised by this, coming 2nd to Fraser by 1:50 and 5 mins clear of 3rd, on an open hilly area, where I was expecting my lack of fitness to turn it into a damage-limitation exercise. Only a couple of very minor fluffs, early on, before I settled in. Didn't quite manage a clean WinSplits report card today. Back was not limiting, though I did stiffen up later.

6 Day day 3, Dundurn & Cnoc a Mhadaidh. Middle distance today. Wonderful area, loved it. Heavy going and very intricate, so I wasn't too disadvantaged by my lack of fitness and bad back; and, thanks to nailing the nav - rare! - I somehow contrived to win the course. I'll take it.

6 Days day 2: Edenchip. I enjoyed this area, and would have loved to be able to run it properly, but by the time I started - 10 mins after the last start, after all day in the IT tent - my back was very sore. I was super slow across the lumpy terrain, which I'd normally have loved. Oh well - I scraped 4th on M45S, somehow. My back was total murder by the evening - I am spending it totally prone and up to my ear - balls on Co-codamol, in the hope that that'll be enough to be vaguely mobile tomorrow again!

6-Day day 1, Auchingarrich. M45S. Lumbered slowly around. Two mistakes, maybe 4 minutes lost; surprised to be 2nd, just 1:14 down. Physically held together OK until I fell in a ditch and tweaked my back when trying to pass someone who'd stopped dead in the middle of the wee track ahead of me.
