11 AM

Bike 1:55:00 [3]

Was going to do the south coast ride plus Oriental Parade, but because of the tsunami warning I decided to head to the hills:) So up Aro Valley to Vic, across to the bottom of Karori, then along the back roads to Crofton Downs and up to Magnus and Lisa's to check out the view again, back down, then up to Gurkha Ctrs to pick up a letter, then down Onslow Rd to the waterfront and all the way around to Te Papa and back to Berhampore past the Basin. Nowhere near enough sleep last night, so was pretty tired...

Long Run 1:30:00 [3]

With Laura and Lizzie up Belmont from Maungaraki - zigzagging mountain bike tracks on the way up, then along the tops to the round knob, then along to Belmont trig and down to the stream and carpark. Really wasn't feeling it for some reason - hot, tired, legs a bit sore from Thursday night? I think it was mostly mental though, because I kept drifting back 5-10m, but then would stay there, so it wasn't like I was actually running slower and getting dropped. Felt better towards the end, but by then we had gone up so many hills I was getting tired!

3 PM

Long Run 35:00 [3]

Easy run from the flat over to Newtown Park, up Mt Albert going along the Hockey turf side, then up to the trig and back along the tops to the zoo, down to Melrose Park, around the zoo and home again.

Other Sport (Indoor Soccer) 30:00 [3]

Indoor Soccer - we only had 4 players, so it was more intense than usual, but we still won 19-11 (helped somewhat by Lizzie's goals...). Cool having more space to move around in with fewer of us on the field.
7 PM

Orienteering 1:20:00 [3]

Hill orienteering reps on Kaukau. Set by Todd - lots of steep (more so than was intended) controls with walk/jog legs in between to recover. Lizzie and I did half of it with only one map, so had a bit of map memory practise, but got another one when the course went close to where the others were just finishing (we started half an hour later). After the first few getting into it the reps were really fun - I loved being able to push really hard, especially on the last few controls, knowing that you got to stop at the top! This time includes warm up and down, as I didn't time it all that accurately.

Bike 1:18:00 [3]

South Coast ride in reverse, so the slow bit over to Kilbirnie and through all the traffic lights was at the start this time, then the nice long bit round Miramar Peninsula and Lyall Bay (the tunnel by the airport had turned into a wind tunnel with the Northerly, which was pretty hard work), then round to Island Bay and up Adelaide Rd home. Really nice ride and good to give my legs a break, especially as my left shin was getting a bit sore after the last week.

Tuesday Feb 23, 2010 #

Note
(rest day)

Legs a bit whacked, so decided to have a day off.

Monday Feb 22, 2010 #

Long Run 53:00 [3]

Recovery run from Anderson's Park up Tinakori Hill with Lizzie - quite steep but we zig-zagged up and down, so got to stretch the legs out a bit at least.

Sunday Feb 21, 2010 #

Long Run 1:28:00 [3]

Butterfly Creek run, starting at Days Bay and going up to the ridgeline then along and down to the creek, then back up and over to Eastbourne and along the beach/footpath (beach was tough work) with Lizzie, Rita, Sam, and Laura. Managed to fall uphill 10mins in and whack my knee really hard on a wooden steep, which hurt heaps for a few minutes and heaps later on, but not during the rest of the run. Cool swim off the wharf at Days Bay afterwards.

Saturday Feb 20, 2010 #

Long Run 3:00:00 [3]

Long run up Kapakapanui (out the back of Waikanae) with Lizzie, Gillian, Magnus, and Mick. Awesome place to run, with multiple river crossings at the beginning and end, and the steep up and downhill sections and the top with all its bogs. Not a fast-paced run, so the three hours seemed to go pretty quickly, but it wasn't too slow either.

Friday Feb 19, 2010 #

9 AM

Bike 1:17:00 [3]

Down Adelaide Rd to Island Bay and all the way around the South Coast and Miramar Peninsula, then back along the cycle lane I discovered to Rongotai and over the hill into Newtown then home. Really good to be out on the bike again, and my legs needed a break from running (was going to go with Hayley later in the day, but she had to wash her running gear before moving down south, so we made incredibly rich chocolate mouse instead...yummy:)

Thursday Feb 18, 2010 #

Long Run 20:00 [3]

Warming up and down, some of the warm down barefoot on the grass - nice feeling.
6 PM

Reps (400m) 35:00 [3]

400m reps at the track with Sarah - aiming at 1.38 but got: 1.37, 1.36, 1.35, 1.38, 1.36, 1.33 with 4min full recoveries. Chatted to Erin Whitla, who had just done a 2km time trial when we arrived. If Sarah had remembered her shoes and shorts we might have looked slightly more convincing (bike pants and my inov8s clearly weren't the fashion...).
8 PM

Other Sport (Indoor Soccer) 30:00 [3]

First grading game of the new season - we won 20-0.

Orienteering 44:00 [3]

Street event from Marsden that included a loop halfway up Johnston's Hill on some really dodgily mapped tracks. Sitting in the car for an hour then not warming up is something I should have learnt by now not to do - spent the first four controls getting into it, and only managed to get any speed in the last part even though I was trying. Got confused at the last control by two within 20m, the right one having the wrong number, and it was on a feature which was on the control descriptions, but not on the map...

Tuesday Feb 16, 2010 #

Long Run 50:00 [3]

Run along Herald St to the track, had a look for Ross' heart rate thing but couldn't find it, then up Mt Albert, then back along the tops and down past the zoo to Melrose Park, round the edge of the zoo and into the pines on the other part of Newtown park and along the top to the water tanks, then down onto the streets and back through Newtown and home via Herald St. Hadn't really decided what I was doing before I left home, so wasn't a very organised run.

Monday Feb 15, 2010 #

Long Run 58:00 [3]

Run from my place over Mt Albert, then down the ridge to Houghton Bay and back up the ridge from Island Bay, through the golf course and past Satan's Slaves on the way home. Amazing lasagne and apple pie (my flat mate), curry (Todd), garlic bread and salad (M and L), quiche (Lizzie), meatballs (Jamie), and asparagus rolls (Sarah).

Sunday Feb 14, 2010 #

Orienteering 1:04:27 [3]

Hapua. In the blazing sunshine:) Mucked up 1 a bit - just wasn't really into the map after trudging all the way up the hill, but then got into it and had a good run till 7, where I saw the best route (round to the left) and somehow allowed myself to ignore it and try to go down and up the incredibly steep gully with no spikes, which wasn't my most brilliant move. Was a bit low coming out of 8, which wasted a bit of time, then just couldn't seem to push it up the hills, and picked a bad route to 13 as well (should have copied Lizzie and thought like a sheep on a hot day). Overall it wasn't really too bad a run though, and it was a nicely set course I think (apart from maybe the last control).

Orienteering 30:00 [3]

Picking up controls with Lizzie - got a lift to the top of the hill, then the first control we picked up was almost all the way back down again. Not much running - I think Lizzie was a bit tired.

Saturday Feb 13, 2010 #

Note
(rest day)

Was going to do something, but after a late night, woke up in time for a horrible call on my cellphone (my parents thought our cat was about to have to be put down, which an hour later they found out wouldn't happen immediately), then ended up going on a massive flat shopping mission to Porirua with my flatmates, then out to Khandallah to find a phone I could ring my parents from. So no time, and not much motivation.

Friday Feb 12, 2010 #

Orienteering 25:00 [3]

Collecting controls at the Botanic Gardens with Lizzie in the drizzle.
6 PM

Long Run 35:00 [3]

Run (note that this was not a jog, for those who apparently have their suspicions) with Lizzie from Vic, through the Botanic Gardens and up to the Ingham's car (parked somewhere in the vicinity of Vic), with a brief detour through Kelburn School to check out their AWESOME adventure playground:)

Thursday Feb 11, 2010 #

10 AM

Note

Had expensive blood tests and xray as part of the extended process to try and figure out the problem with my wrist...now I am poor...
11 AM

Orienteering 40:00 [3]

Putting out controls at the Botanic Gardens around the southern part of the map.
6 PM

Reps (400m) 35:00 [3]

400m reps at the track with the gang - 1.36, 1.34, 1.37, 1.36, 1.34, 1.36 - was aiming at 1.38, but did them all a bit fast.

Long Run 20:00 [3]

Warmup from the track to my flat and back to the track with Todd, because I forgot the list of everyone's times from the 5k. Warmdown around the track.
10 PM

Other Sport (Indoor Soccer) 30:00 [3]

Playoff for 3rd, which we won (11-6) so we got trophies - exciting! Got kicked in the side of my knee right near the end, which was fairly painful later.

Wednesday Feb 10, 2010 #

Orienteering 20:00 [3]

Collecting controls in the Botanic Gardens after Queen Margarets coaching.

Tuesday Feb 9, 2010 #

Long Run 15:00 [3]

Warmup 2mins (had just biked there), warmdown 13mins.

Bike 15:00 [3]

Frantic biking from the hospital to the waterfront when I realised that I'd almost left too late...
6 PM

Time Trial 21:34 [5] 5.0 km (4:19 / km)

Waterfront 5km race with the gang - it was actually 130m short because they tried to adjust the length because of some temporary fencing, but got it slightly wrong... I think I started a bit hard, but was coming right at halfway...about 200m before I got the stitch. Managaed to breathe my way through that, only to have to rest of my intestines attacked, which was not very pleasant. Pleased with my time though.

Monday Feb 8, 2010 #

6 PM

Long Run 58:00 [3]

From Marsden Village, Karori along some back roads to Karori Park, up the hill and back via Johnson's Hill. With Lizzie, Nick, Lisa, Magnus.

Sunday Feb 7, 2010 #

Note
(rest day)

Spent a large part of the day packing and washing the car (algae was growing in all the little protected spots...).

Saturday Feb 6, 2010 #

Note
(rest day)

Travelling home from the South Island.

Friday Feb 5, 2010 #

Walk 1:30:00 [3]

At Pupu Springs and the hydro dam and aqueduct near Takaka.

Thursday Feb 4, 2010 #

Other Sport (Tramping) 1:40:00 [3]

From Awaroa to Totaranui, then caught the boat back to Marahau. Cool estuary to cross right at the hut at Awaroa - only possible within an hour either side of low tide.

Wednesday Feb 3, 2010 #

Other Sport (Tramping) 4:00:00 [3]

From Bark Bay to Awaroa. Quite a few beautiful beaches and rocky outcrops. Crossed a tidal crossing that would only have been impassable about an hour either side of high tide. Went swimming near the lodge at Awaroa - warmest water so far.

Tuesday Feb 2, 2010 #

Other Sport (Tramping) 6:00:00 [3]

Anchorage to Bark Bay - walked the high tide route and went up to Cleopatra's Pools, which was really cool - went swimming in them, which was fun but slightly cold.

Monday Feb 1, 2010 #

Other Sport (Tramping) 4:00:00 [3]

The Abel Tasman - Marahau to Anchorage in the afternoon. Feeling pretty tired from the weekend and flying up from Chritchurch so early, but a very nice place to walk!
