Note
(rest day)

More physio - less painful this time but she said I shouldn't go for a run on it straight away, and seemed relieved to hear that it was my rest day.

Thursday Feb 28, 2008 #

Intervals intervals 40:07 [3]
ahr:160 max:189

6x 600m intervals at the track across the road. As I ran up the back straight I could watch the Highlanders playing, and see the NZ vs England cricket through the fence. Took a while to figure out how to accurately do 600m in lane 4, but luckily I was the only one there for most of the time, so no one was really watching me not being used to an athletics track.

Long Run warm up/down 20:00 [3]

10 up - part of this was jogging around reading the markings on the track trying to figure out what I was doing. 10 down (some was very slow, watching the cricket as I went past).

Wednesday Feb 27, 2008 #

Orienteering 25:00 [4]

Chingford Park, did a bit more bush-bashing than necessary, and missed the last control (got to 20m from the finish before I realised and had to run back up the hill to get it).

Bike warm up/down 40:00 [3]

Bike from the flat up Northeast Valley to orienteering and back.

Tuesday Feb 26, 2008 #

Intervals 37:00 [4]
ahr:166 max:183

Intervals at Opoho Park - must have done about 10 laps. 2x 3min, 3x 2min, 4x 1min, 5x 30s, with jogging recoveries the same time as the interval before it. The last few were fun, doing just 30secs at a time.

Long Run warm up/down 20:00 [3]

10 up, 10 down.

Monday Feb 25, 2008 #

Long Run 1:15:00 [3]
ahr:165 max:178

Up through Botanic Gardens then to the reservoir (bottom track, top track, lower loop) and discovered that I can't get home from there in 15 minutes. Included 3 9min efforts. Was a bit slow (deep massage from the physio on my right peroneal muscles to try to break up scar tissue to release the nerve is very very painful I discovered), but my HR seemed very low for some reason. I now have swelling from the massage - arggghhh.

Sunday Feb 24, 2008 #

Long Run tempo 40:06 [4]
ahr:175 max:193

From middle of Botanic Gardens up to the reservoir, 1 loop and back, so was possibly most intense a bit early, but definately did get faster building up to the end.

Long Run warm up/down 21:00 [3]

11 up plus stretches, 10 down. Was highly amused when I saw all the Selwyn College freshers struggling down the Leith, covered in mud and chanting, and having stuff thrown at them.

Saturday Feb 23, 2008 #

Long Run 1:20:00 [3]
ahr:170 max:190

Up Signal Hill, down the closed tracks (oops) to Logan Park High School. Really hot, but a nice run (did a few investigatory loops along little offshoot roads as well).

Friday Feb 22, 2008 #

Note
(rest day)

Pretty tired.

Thursday Feb 21, 2008 #

Long Run tempo 30:12 [4]
ahr:175 max:191

Tempo run - 2x cemetary, 4.5x Opoho Park. Found it a bit hard to get going and a bit boring round the park - I'll go somewhere else next time.

Long Run warm up/down 20:00 [3]

Right leg sore on warmup (10 up, 19 down).

Wednesday Feb 20, 2008 #

Orienteering 57:00 [4]

Ross Creek - interesting mapping led to many minutes searching for a control in piles of blackberry and tangles of vines on a steep hillside, but other than that it was okay.

Bike 20:00 [3]

Bike to and from Rita's place.

Long Run 20:00 [3]

Run to event and back from Rita's.

Tuesday Feb 19, 2008 #

Intervals hills 24:06 [3]
ahr:167 max:190

6x 2min intervals up steps to cemetary off Butts Rd - not quite long enough so they had about 40m of flat at the top. Admired the view over Dunedin and avoided the piles of vomit and other debris.

Long Run warm up/down 20:00 [3]

10 up, 10 down.

Other Sport (Hockey) 30:00 [4]

Summer hockey - got wasted 11-5 after a reasonable first half effort of 5-3.

Monday Feb 18, 2008 #

Long Run 1:03:00 [4]
ahr:172 max:190

Run up round the reservior with Rita. Included 5 4min harder bits (one was uphill and closer to 5mins because there didn't seem like any point in going easy before we got to the top). Felt good after too many days of doing nothing. Got the phone call last night to say I'm going to JWOC, so getting excited about that as well.

Bike 15:00 [3]

Bike to Rita's and back.

Sunday Feb 17, 2008 #

Note
(rest day)

Christchurch - Dunedin, cleaning out my room and trying to get rid of three extra sets of drawers that somehow appeared in my room over the holidays...

Saturday Feb 16, 2008 #

Note
(rest day)

Wanganui - Christchurch. 12 hours of travelling - what joy.

Friday Feb 15, 2008 #

Long Run 47:19 [3]
ahr:167

Last run around the lake and stuff - ah the nostalgia.

Thursday Feb 14, 2008 #

Bike 1:13:00 [3]
ahr:151

Bike up the river (to just past Mosquito Point) during showers of rain - last one for a while in Wanganui. Felt much better today - also played tennis with Mitchell and went for a big long walk with Mum.

Wednesday Feb 13, 2008 #

Long Run long 39:09 [3]
ahr:179 max:190

Still really tired for some reason, and my heartrate seemed pretty high for this run - I wasn't exactly running slowly though. Montgomery Rd, Lake (top track), back home via Parkes Ave, Ngapuhi St.

Tuesday Feb 12, 2008 #

Bike 34:09 [3]
ahr:158

Thwarted at every turn - it rained, my bike mysteriously got two flat tyres whilst sitting in a carpeted hallway, our bike pump doesn't match the valves, I ran out of time. Down past Dad's work, along the close side of the river past the Warehouse, back home again. Very tired.

Monday Feb 11, 2008 #

Note
(rest day)

Took one antihistamine to reduce the swelling of my eyelid after it got bitten by some kind of insect on Saturday night, and ended up spending most of the day asleep or in a pretty drowsy state - I had no idea it would have that much of an effect!

Sunday Feb 10, 2008 #

Orienteering race 1:05:30 [5]

Karepiro Beach - easily my worst run of the week. Screwed up quite a few of the 10 controls (I think due to being tired and the map being so different to the previous ones), but the worst was a relatively short leg to 4 - my distance estimation was quite out and I started looking way too early in a series of re-entrants instead of a seasonal stream.

Long Run tempo 20:00 [3]

That was a long 2km to the start!

Saturday Feb 9, 2008 #

Orienteering race 41:38 [5]

Hedley Rd Multiday - cool map, quite a technical course - made a quite few mistakes (as did everyone it seems), but no huge ones. Had to be careful in the low-vis forest areas after being in the open, then again when emerging because the contours were hard to read.

Long Run warm up/down 15:00 [3]

Friday Feb 8, 2008 #

Note
(rest day)

Went to the driving range with Lizzie, Riki, and Georgia W and attempted to teach Georgia how to play, then went to Murawai and made sand sculptures and swam and looked at gannets.

Thursday Feb 7, 2008 #

Orienteering race 10:06 [4]

Ultra Short Sprint at One Tree Hill - bit of fun - couldn't get to grips with the scale in the 10 minutes it took to run it!

Long Run warm up/down 10:00 [3]

Wednesday Feb 6, 2008 #

Orienteering race 1:01:20 [5]

Aramiro - JWOC Long Trial. Not the best run - screwed up 1, 2, and 3, plus a few other mistakes. I was a bit gutted when Georgia W caught me at 3, but then I got more focussed and we exchanged the lead a few times before I screwed up at 12 coming back over the ridgeline and she got ahead by about a minute. Lost time trying to cross the stream to the last control as well - should have just gone for it.

Long Run warm up/down 15:00 [3]

Tuesday Feb 5, 2008 #

Orienteering 55:15 [4]

Kairangi Loops Race - just jogged the whole thing because I didn't want to wreck myself for the Long trial tomorrow. Unfortunately, didn't see 11 on the first map (back from the pivot for the third time), so got MP. Pity the course had to cover the same ground so many times.

Monday Feb 4, 2008 #

Orienteering 16:34 [5]

Waikato Uni Sprint - amazed myself by having such a steady run, and finished feeling like I maybe could have gone harder. Awesome course too - I liked that there weren't any big long legs across open fields, so it was really technical.

Long Run warm up/down 15:00 [3]

Sunday Feb 3, 2008 #

Orienteering 41:10 [5]

Waihora chasing start - after starting with Georgia W and Laura caught Rachel, then Laura (again) and Kate M - quite cool running together but taking slightly different route choices.

Long Run warm up/down 10:00 [3]

Saturday Feb 2, 2008 #

Orienteering 27:15 [5]

Hot, open farmland, a few mistakes, unhappy with how much time I lost to Greta purely on running speed after control five, but overall an alright run.

Long Run warm up/down 10:00 [3]

Friday Feb 1, 2008 #

Long Run 30:00 [3]

Gentle jog.
