XC Race race 31:26 [5] 5.0 mi (6:17 / mi)
ahr:177 max:185 shoes: Asics GT-2100 (2005)

Our last cross country race of the year, and it was freezing. I felt great starting out, and paced myself on the first mile, coming in at 5:55, but it didn't seem to help. I just couldn't seem to say with anyone today, and I kept dropping back at every hill like I had stopped. The 2nd and 3rd miles both had a really steep hill on them, and it knocked be back both times. I tried to pick it up again on the 4th mile since it was supposed to be a fast one, but I just couldn't get back in the race, and I ended up just dropping back more. I didn't even really push that hard on the 5th mile because I just couldn't get my head into it. I was freezing and I just didn't feel like hanging my lungs out to dry in the cold weather.

Anyway, here are my mile splits with HR details:

1.) 5:55 - 177 Ave.HR - 185 Max.HR
2.) 6:21 - 182 - 185
3.) 6:23 - 179 - 182
4.) 6:08 - 175 - 179
5.) 6:37 - 173 - 178

You can see from my HR just how slow I was running. My average should be a steady 182 throughout the whole race, and after the 2nd mile, I just couldn't stay in it. Interestingly, my time wasn't all that bad for this course compared to what I have been running all season. The course was quite hilly, and I was less than a minute of my PR, so either I have improved more than I thought, or I wasn't actually running as crappy as I thought. I think it is probably the former though, because my HR indicates I wasn't pushing nearly as hard as I normally do in a race.
