Orienteering 3:00:00 [3] ***
shoes: Integrators
ScotJOS at South Achray. (Have I disqualified myself from the next night race?)

Put out controls, shadowing, relay race (stopped to help Tom find his shoe), collecting in controls (back up the hill).

Saturday Feb 23

Event: Scottish Night Championships

Orienteering 17:00 [3] ***
shoes: Innov8s
ScotJOS Training at Plean. The Speed course.

Me and my dudes did it as a chasing start with me going off last. Was very surprised by the low visibility terrain so was a bit hesitant to start. When I caught my guys up decided to do a bit of shadowing to see what they were up to. I fear I wouldn't have caught Spongey anyway.
Orienteering (Control Collecting) 15:00 [2] ***
shoes: Integrators
Collected in a couple of controls.
Orienteering race (Night) 57:54 [5] *** 8.3 km (6:59 / km)
28c shoes: Integrators
Scottish Night Champs at Kinneil Wood.

Nice fast flat area which in theory should suit me. It didn't. Was pretty tired after partying/coaching and completely messed up 1. It was a depression very near a path. Thought to myself "Take a nice careful bearing from that obvious attack point Rosco". Then as I got there thought "Nah, let's just go for it." What an absolute donkey. Finally got it after taking a nice careful bearing from that obvious attack point. After that was very scrappy and found it very difficult to run in a straight line. 16 was a particular highlight, where I crossed a track running at 90 degrees to the one I thought I was crossing and carried merrily on for quite some time.

Good fun anyway.

Running warm up/down 10:00 [3]
shoes: Integrators
Good warm up. Didn't bother warming down.

Friday Feb 22

Running hills 35:00 [5]
shoes: Asics Running
Did Thursday's hills session on my tod. At the Back Walk - a more pleasant place for a session but the hill is a bit flatter and shorter. Is this a bad thing?!

Did 60/60/90/120/150/120/90/60/30/60/90/120. Jog back recovery. The first one was a 60 cause I couldn't hear my watch beep in the howling gale. Decided not to do the last 150 as I had partying to be done. Feeling pretty good but bored.
Running warm up/down 25:00 [3]
shoes: Asics Running
Trotting to/from hoose.
Ceilidh Dancin 30:00 [2]
shoes: Trendy Walshes
Bit of jigging in Glasgow.

Thursday Feb 21

Note
(rest day)
Was meant to be in Glasgow but didn't even get there due to silly issues with boring things at work. They meant I was unable to make hills too. Well if I really wanted to I maybe could have....but I slipped into old habits and watched the mighty gers earn a glorious draw with Panithanikos then couldn't be bothered going out. Will do them Fri (hopefully...).

trotting up and down
Orienteering race (night) 36:15 [4] *** 5.4 km (6:43 / km) +260m 5:25 / km
22c shoes: Integrators
FVO night race at Dumyat East.

Great area for the nighttime and really enjoyed myself. I love how at 5.30 you can be sitting in your office doing boring things and just 1 hour later you can be up in the hills, testing your wits and legs; racing, adventuring. Awesome.

Ewan was making it look very easy at the front and I was doing my best to keep up but slowly and surely he pulled away. Finally by 13 I had to find them myself.... Got a little put off by all the folks on the short course at 16 so ran up the wrong wee hill (just checking) and had a wee pause in the circle at 18 but was fine apart from that.

Was lacking, though, in that relaxed controlled flow that proper orienteers have. Will I ever have it? Only if I am rigorous in working on: ensuring I leave the control in exactly the right direction, simplification, and visualisation. But I'm not sure that I have a personality that allows for rigor.... And I still need to be able to run faster through terrain. As Lard said to me last night - I just need to work on my orienteering. Cheeky bugger.

Running intervals (Terrain) 21:00 [4]
shoes: Innov8s
Terrain intervals (first time ever) in Hermitage Woods above the uni.

7x90s uphill/30 rest/60 downhill/30 rest

Was running late as was in a groove with the paper I was writing at work. (The paper I should have been writing instead of my wee novella....). Therefore only made the last 2 with the posse. Kept my backpack on and just about managed to keep up with JonX. After the others had gone probably didn't try quite as hard for a few of the other 5 (also sans backpack) but got right up to the big re-entrant for the last one. Ankles were feeling a bit dodgy on the downhill (tired after Carnethy).

wu an eerie run through the fog from the office.
wd JonX gained brownie points and waited to give me a lift home so just to the car park. Nearly got eaten by a dog.
