| WMOC Sprint Final, Praia da Vieira.
M40 A final, 19th place. Pretty pleased when I finished today, concentrated well and felt like I ran the race I planned. Much better than yesterday! One I got the map back and saw the splits then can find a bit of time - lost 15secs at #3 when didn't see the alley I wanted to run up, but knew I'd missed it so just continued round the block and found it okay. - tiny miss at #12 (maybe 5 seconds) when I stopped just next to the flag because the ground shape wasn't how I had envisaged. - left #9 on the red line without a plan, could have avoided green and gone left, instead had to run round tracks to the right, perhaps 10/15 seconds slower. Did give a safe attack to a tricky flag though (this one was Jon Musgrave's downfall on M45). In retrospect then could also have attacked a bit more early on and pushed harder on the (relatively) long legs to #4 and #5, lost some time here and could maybe have found another 20s. Pleased with result though, top 20 was the aim at the start of the day - and my rubbish qualification position did at least mean I was leading for a while when I came in! Winner was Allan Mogensen in 13:54, almost a minute clear (!). Charlie was 13th with 16:24 and Martin 16th in 16:33. Then a leisurely lunch in the cafe, a dip in the lake, and a snooze on the beach. Nice.

| WMOC sprint qualifier.
Job done and in the A final, not nearly as easily or as competently as I would have liked though. Good fun despite that and enjoyed it even though felt under pressure for most of the race! V complex section in the castle to start, made a mistake on route to #2 and lost over 30s but then got v confused at #3, think I was in the right place but couldn't see gap to stairs, backtracked and went long way round, cost over 2 mins - at #3 Martin Ward was 2:18 elapsed and I was 5:02! Didn't panic but had to push hard through the rest, did it all fine and just lost 15sec on one route choice on a longish leg near the end. Finished the same distance behind Martin as I was at #3, he was 5th and I was 25th (36 to qualify from each heat). Not an ideal start place given that some of final is in forest, but lucky to be in at all. Also ankle sore but manageable, then did it again on the kerb on the way to final control. Couldn't warm down as a result, doesn't seem much worse now so fingers crossed for tomorrow.

Nice to get out into the forest, did some controls with MC, first impressions are lovely runnable pine and that the veg screen is pretty vague, gives some idea of runnability and visibility, not necessarily definite enough to trust for navigation though.

| Still pretty dubious about my ankle, still sore to the touch and some swelling but after a couple of days off it was time to give it another test so headed off round Leckie loop from home.
Ankle pretty stiff and sore on the first bit along the road, once my legs woke up and i found the running a bit easier, it eased off a bit too. Unsurprisingly it definitely felt better when off the hard surface, shame the first WMOC race (sprint qual) is all in a town! Worth getting out though, loosened up the joint a bit and after icing immediately post-run seems a bit better if anything. Fingers crossed....

Have been feeling worn out for weeks and trip for Jukola etc just about finished me off - hopefully a lazy weekend with lots of sleep will have sorted me out, looking to feel a bit more spritely than recently in my running next week, just in time for Portugal. Ankle always permitting of course....

| Ben Sheann hill race, latest in the Bog and Burn series
No problem with adrenaline for this race, was at a work thing in Perthshire and it took forever to drive to Strathyre, thought I was going to miss the start. Abandoned my car in the bus stop, changed hastily and legged it down to the start. Got there with two mins to spare, so much for warming up properly for a race witha brutal climb straight off the start. Felt okay but started a bit quickly, checked my watch when I started to feel it in my legs and we had been going for nearly 4 mins! Rosco and Dixie were ahead, but Brad passed me easily, then Jack B caught and passed me near the top. Stalker B caught me too but true to his name stayed right behind me all the way to the summit. Got into it again on the descent despite getting stung by two wasps (ouch!) but Stalker was tracking me, couldn't get away and together we caught Jack. Flying down the steep bits and almost fell a couple of times, right ankle got compressed at one point and hurt A LOT. Got past Jack and thought I was away, got to the final short straight and could hear someone closing me down - was sure it was Stalker so put on a desperate sprint, flashed across the line just ahead of them and turned round to find it was someone else entirely! Good FVO turn out for a fun race, Abii in particular couldn't work out whether it was the ascent or the descent she had enjoyed more. A mixed bag of performances, Jamie Jnr was 2nd to Prasad, Brad almost but not quite got back to Dixie on the descent, and Abii and Elle will never get so close to John Stevenson again.... And most importantly of all I am now ahead of Lard in the Bog and Burn series!

| Jukola 2008, leg two for JOK.
Felt curiously un-nervous and short of adrenaline in the warmup pen, the setup maybe didn't help as runners waiting to go out could not see the big screen - and waiting at the changeover point did not give much of a view of people coming in. I did use the clever 'check your team's progress' thing a couple of times - the first time Rosco wasn't at the third check when I thought he might well be - the second time he had picked up 150 places and was almost back - now that was good for the adrenaline! Got to the changeover where there was about 4 yards of space per 100 teams and a huge scrum of people, couldn't see much through the crowd in the 500-600 section. Thought I could see enough though, right up to the moment when I heard Rosco shouting my name - oh shit - sorry mate - could only have been a few seconds lost but more adrenaline. Ran off telling myself to be calm, turned on my torch - looked at map - couldn't see anything - torch not working - oh shit oh shit. Let's try full beam, that works, try the other again, success, thank god for that, now be calm- long race - be calm. And I was calm, could have gone faster on the long leg to #1 but settled into a line of runners going straightish without trying to leg it past them, splashed through the first man-eating bog thinking of the chaos there must have been there on leg one, kept reaonable track of where we were, picked it up okay nearer the flag, across the stream and up the little slope and left towards the control. Others stop at the boulder but I know it isn't mine (and in fact wasn't on leg two at all) and I see it ahead of me. Good start and I feel into the race. Another long leg to #2 and I am straight out to the track option to the left, don't feel great and others are going faster but I am doing my own thing, confident enough to cut the corner through the green leaving the track, confident enough to ignore every single other runner heading up the marsh to my left whilst I go east-ish up the snall hill. Confident right up to the moment when I stop - no flag - no people - I am wavering - aha lights ahead slightly higher than I was headed - get up there, open hill and runners all giving it that distinctive 'I hope someone else finds it' look - time to be confident, I thought they were too high, they must be, 15 yards down the hill there it is, I lead them all in but a minute or so lost, stupid. #3 is common, #4 is easy on a road although the drinks throw me as there are two sets and I haven't seen the first set on the map, #5 looks very tricky and vague - must be careful, pick my way up the big rocky re-entrant and then lose touch on the vague slope, dammit, idiot. Again there are lights eveywhere. Ignore them all this time and pick my slowly way along it, relocate on the way, there it is!! Lots of lights at this one, all stood still trying to work out what the control is on - it may not be theirs but it is mine, very satisfying! Probably a minute lost but disaster averted, big relief! The next section is rough and tough and (it turns out) common. I am struggling physically to #6 and #7, my ankle is sore, my back is killing me I keep falling over, and it is pissing down. Hopefully not too many runners around me understand my expletives. #8 is a long vague leg and looks very tricky, I am sure it must be gaffled after the common section in the open, and am relieved to see my catching feature show up after 5 mins on rough compass, do my own thing into the flag and find it fine. Can't believe it in the week when I find out the control was common! Easy leg to #9 and a track run to #10, no-one seems to want to cut off where I do so I bash through the next block on my own, control is tricky and lots of lights stood around, I am very pleased with myself as I pass them all and sneak straight into it. Maybe too pleased with my self and not concentrating, tricky short leg to #11 sees me get distracted near the control and dragged too low, a moment's thought and I know what is wrong but 90secs lost to get back up to the flag. Another common section through more felled grot and another TV control, still feel I am struggling a bit and again lose a few places on the running even though no-one seems to be going that quickly, somehow I don't seem to be able to either. And then a tricky-looking section through some nice white forest, it all seems to be confusing people or very gaffled as there is lots of hesitating and running in different directions, but I know where I am and find #17, Then suddenly I am all alone again, trust my compass and bash through a vague green flat bit, think I know where I am but not 100% sure, it should be just there - another light coming in from my right - there it is! Not that far now, off we go to #20, looks tricky but the rocky ridge is nice, cut down it to run along a flat veg change, don't think much of the white to my left as it is all low trees, but here's the hill - up onto it but it seems further to the top than I think, can't make it fit, runners everywhere asking "118? 118?". Even in my panic I expect to see mustachioed runners in GB vests appear any second. But no, nothing appear except some big cliffs where there should not be any - some desperate runners even descending them to search for the flag. Cliffs - big cliffs - on the north side - oh no - wrong hill - wrong veg change - all going wrong - am right over there - back we go - no problem with adrenaline now - here's the right hill, worryingly there are people thrashing around all over the place here too - careful, should be here - YES! IT IS! 118! Get on with it after that but it is a single line of people to #22, I am a slow learner as again I think we are too high but stay in the queue and again the flag is not mine, start to drop down but then see another flag, check that out too - finally go to where I wanted initially and there it is, strangely dark and silent but definitely mine. Another minute lost, will I even break two hours?? Try and push the rest even though I am running along like some crippled old man, holding my back and digging my fingers into the muscle to try and loosen it a bit. Pick up a few places including Peter Hodkinson for NOC (has passed me at #20), can't hold him off on the run in though. Finish in under 2 hours with about 10 min lost to mistakes, 5 mis of them at #20. Pretty disappointed at the finish, struggled physically which I didn't expect particularly after feeling strong at Forssa, and raging about how stupid I was at #20. Would have been happy with a few minor misses as after all it was quite tricky and quite dark. Am totally wrecked at the finish, soaked and muddy, stiffen up quickly and get very cold. So I know I tried! Rosco and Ian Cumpstey are there, they tell me that the hot showers are fab and the sauna is amazing - and they are right, what a lifesaver! And the 5 mins was very significant at the time, if not overall. On the leg I lost 49 places, from 313 to 362 5 mins quicker would have been a gain of 6 places, from 313 to 307 On leg time I finished 458th of 1368 5 mins quicker would have been 106 places higher, 352nd. And we finished 256th, 5 mins quicker would have squeezed us 6 places higher and in the top 250 - would have been nice!

Headed up from Tampere to Jukola training forest, pretty nice in general, not as rough as Forssa race on Thurs. Took it easy and stopped a bit to look at how things were mapped etc, started to feel v tired in last 20 mins though. Forssa Games H40. Left home at 6am and got there at 6.30pm Finnish time, just in time to change and run to the start, perfect preparation. Took quite a while to get into the map so a bit hesitant early on, when I felt more confident I speeded up and made a mess of #7 and #8, lost 4-5 mins in total. Okay apart from that but well behind Ben (29mins) and the winner was well out of sight (24mins). Felt fine running though, terrain was pretty rough and tough and felt strong moving through it.

Didn't go too well really, felt okay but couldn't turn my legs round quickly enough.Lard passed me once it levelled off and went away pretty easilt, bradc looked like he was struggling too but wasn't getting any closer. Ross was of course away and gone on his way to 4th. At least I had a huge gap behind me so didn't lose any places in the second half and could mince slowly down the final descent. Not really a race for the heavier runner either, even in dry conditions it is pretty boggy on top, I got well and truly stuck at one point! Winner equalled the record (48:16), Rosco was 51;09, Jase 55:43 and Brad 56:15ish. Ho hum.

| Roasting hot day for the WOC long test and National event at Brown Clee, glad (mostly) that I had a last minute change of plan and entered M40L not M21E!
Pretty rough tough course with the fiddly vague section on top of the hill at the start and a lot of slogging through heather and tussocks later on. Felt pretty average running up to the start, forgot the water I meant to take with me which didn't help. Got called up and realised I had forgotten description holder too. Maybe this was a sign I was not thinking too clearly - if so I was not thinking clearly enough to realise it! Was on line for tricky vague #1 but not confident enough where I was, saw another flag and mis-identified feature, headed off to the right. Sorted it out and only lost a couple of minutes which turns out to be small relative to a lot of others including the elite women (same #1)! Hesitant to #2 and stopped short initially, carried on pretty hesitant and nothing seemed to look how I expected, always finding myself 30m or so from the flag and losing little bits of time. Had seen Richard Barrett at #1 (though he had caught me, turns out I caught him there) and he reappeared at #7 so there was a bit of toing and froing - when we headed off on the long leg I was just in front so that kept me running through the heather. Pretty much summed things up when I hesitated near the control and he overtook me, he missed it and I found it first, then I went offline on the approach to the next one and he overtook me again. Thought I would get away from Richard when he went low on the next long leg with a climb up to the control, I climbed initially and then had good path/bank running all the way round the contour to the control, but again I was very hesitant and he got there just behind. He gradually pulled away after that and I took a poor route at the end of the leg at #17 so lost sight of him. Would still have beaten him but got caught in cack on chosen route to #19 and lost a little time, then tried to cross semi-open re-entrant leaving #19 instead of dropping slightly to road and then climbing again - tried twice but couldn't get through all the unmapped gorse in the re-entrant so back tracked and went down to road, lost nearly 2 mins, not happy. Tough old race, felt like I was struggling but knew others would be too so kept going - plus was supposed to be having a race with Lard (M35L on same course) so kept trying even though I felt like I was dropping time all over the place. Got back and Lard had done the dirty on me by jacking it in! Pretty done in (and sunburned!) afterwards - running a tough race in the heat must be good practice for WMOC in Portugal though. Back in time to relax in the field for a while and watch the elite courses finish, then off for WOC/WUOC selection meeting. Finished meeting art 9.30pm (long meeting!) and home just before 3am (long day!).

| Managed to get out for a run off last start at WOC sprint test. Late decision so not very well warmed up, felt pretty heavy legged but speed not too bad.
Brain not quite there though and made two stupid errors - spotted the blind alley trap to #5 (unlike many) so told myself "don't take the first one", turned right, ignored the correct one and went down the third one instead. Luckily it had a bend so realised quickly, still 30secs lost though. - lost concentration on way to #7 and turned left once not twice, had to double back to correct road, another 30secs lost. Also didn't see right hand route to #6, not sure whether that was quicker or not. On my own for the first part but caught a few people from #8 onwards. Surprisingly sneaked into the UK Cup points but could/should have been top 30. Rosco didn't have the best start to the race and gifted me a victory over him, my two costly mistakes put me 19 secs behind Lard though, dammit.

| FVO evening event at Barr Wood. Just about still okay before the bracken takes it over for a few months....
Still feeling my glands and tired but felt okay running, could have run harder but still not quite feeling as I should be, getting there though - I hope. It was my brain that was the big problem today anyway, just kept running vaguely straight and treated it as a running course with no real need to navigate even though I know it is tricky. #1 - stopped short #2 - couldn't find it, not helped by stray line on my map from marking it up, plus it was too low on the slope anyway. leaving #3 - ran to fence slap bang between the two crossing points #4 - missed it way left and overshot #5 - marked it in the wrong place #6 - drifted well left again #7 - ran out of 6 with no plan, wrong way round large patch of green which took me much too far right route to #8 - didn't have a plan and so bashed through on first part of leg instead of easy line feature After #8 (but not until then, slow learner!) I gave myself a bit of a talking to about making the evening vaguely useful, and did the rest okay. Motivation to run the rest was helped by catching Dixie at #10 and taking a different route which got me ahead on the long leg to #11, getting ahead was a good reason to keep going at a decent pace. Doug Tullie ran round in 31 mins, also good to see Scotia there and running most of the course, sounds like he will be okay to run the selection races, good news.

| Surprise View to Stanage Pole and back, despite two days off felt pretty sluggish and heavy-legged. Could have gone faster but not at all inspired to do so, just not feeling like I would have expected - right hamstring sore and tight which didn't help.
Had to keep reminding myself that it was only a couple of weeks ago that I was running well at Dumyat Hill Race and then was strong at the Harvester so it is not like I am suddenly unfit - maybe a bit short of sleep and run down over the past fortnight so an easy week this week will hopefully sort things out....it had better!
