Note
(rest day)
Nice sunny day in the Peak District.

Observed this on my way from Sheffield to meeting in BOF office in the afternoon.

Meeting overran.

Observed it again on my way back to Sheffield in the early evening.

Didn't have time for a run. Not happy!

First of all I was doing the Clydebank 10km today. Didn't seem like a very good idea by the afternoon so didn't go.

Second plan was to run up one of the Gargunnock hills. That didn't happen either.

Third time lucky, went to play golf at Stirling Uni. To play really badly as it turned out. Rosco on the other hand had clearly played before. Fraser may actually have some competition for the title of FVO golf champion this year!

And the evening sunshine was so nice that after golf a run featured after all, went for a tootle up to the top of Dumyat and back via Logie Kirk. Awesome mountain views, well worth it. Felt a bit better than yesterday too, stomach still not quite right but don't think it is anything much, sure it will be fine in a day or two.

Knock of Crieff hill race, on a right gloomy day, big contrast with the last few days, in cloud at the top and everything.

Had being planning to use the Minewoods evening event as a warmup but feeling not quite right so gave it a miss - had worked from home all day for the same reason. This was perhaps a big clue that I might not feel at my best in the race!

Felt dodgy on the way to the start but okay after more of a warmup, set off okay and managed to avoid following Fraser into the start-too-fast trap. He seemed to be coming back towards me half way up the climb, but when i need to start to dig in a bit, instead I felt ropey again and started going back throught the field fairly quickly. Lard went straight past and off in pursuit of Fraser - they were quickly out of sight, and it was not all down to the low visibility!

Took it a bit easier round the middle section - only a small race so only lost one more place here - then looked back before the final climb to see Sprint Finish King, Doug Flint, closing fast. Made myself run the climb and didn't feel too bad, kept it going okay to the finish without letting Doug get within sprint finish distance.

Finished 2 mins behind Lard and Fraser - disappointing as I would have hoped to be in a good race with them on a better day. 6 mins behind Rosco who was a good 2nd overall.

Warm up to start and checking out the first (steep!) section on the road, warm down feeling pretty dire.

Pleasant run from the Uni up to the fort near Dumyat with Elle, Ali, and Rosco. Quite warm but pretty windy on top so didn't loiter enjoying the view fo long. Met Gary on the way down and headed back via Sherrifmuir Road.

Still tired legs but loosened off okay after a while - it is supposed to be a hard week but I think the Knock of Crieff race on Wednesday could be a bit of a struggle. Not to mention the Clydebank 10km the day after....

Pleasant easy run in the sun with Rosco from Gargunnock.

Tried to check out a couple of previously unexplored paths but were deterred by a chainsaw the first time and a rifle the second time.

Looking forward to welcoming FVO for an evening run here soon....

Orienteering race 37:46 [5]**** 5.6 km (6:45 / km) +325m 5:14 / km
spiked:19/21c shoes: VJ Falcon
Scottish Champs relay back at Tullochroisk - I thought this was a fantastic event!

Glorious weather meant the assembly field gave brilliant views in all directions, great planning made enjoyable use of all the most pleasant and runnable bits of the area, and FVO had some top results!

FVO women held off EUOC to win - amazingly the first time FVO has ever won the Scottish Women's Open title - and the FVO Juniors took their trophy too. With 2nd in the Handicap, 3rd in Men's Open and 3rd for the second team in Women's Open, it was a good day. Although tantalisingly close to scoring wins in Men Open and Handicap to make it a Grand Slam day......just a couple of minutes behind in both races.

My team did pretty well too, 5th place in the Men's Open. Really enjoyed my race and ran quite well - very well when I factor in all the fine wine and whisky consumed in the Dunalistair Hotel the night before!

I was on second leg and had time to see Rosco bring FVO men back in 1st on leg one - exciting - then Will came back in 5th less than 4 mins down. Started off a bit quick and was feeling it on the climbs through the middle section of the course, but just one small (10/15s) miss and one poor route (30s) at the far end - started to head for crossing point then realised I didn't need to. Almost caught Interlopers for 4th but not quite - not sure in any case whether Fraser would have thanked me for sending him out in a race with Murray Strain - but as it was I held 5th place at the finish and Fraser finished the job - importantly holding off Paddy W for Clyde!

A really fun event and with spectator value from the assembly field - able to see runners at a couple of points quite far out on the course, and then again right near the end.

Relays were all done and dusted by lunchtime and it seemed a shame not to do something else with the day, particularly as MC had not run earlier on. So - with Schiehallion (scene of the invention of contours!) overlooking the assembly field, the something else seemed obvious....

Last time I was up here then I couldn't see much, today we I could see the Lomonds of Fife to the east and Ben Nevis to the west - I am sure you could see a long way in other directions too but I wasn't so good on other identifications!

Pretty busy up there with plenty of other orienteers having had the same idea - met the Acklands, Donald & Lucile Macleod, and Mark Saunders/Alice Bedwell and saw various other familiar faces. Mark and Alice were running down, as was Donald - running it definitely was not on my agenda!

On the way up MC was singing the praises of her boots - "bought cheaply in 1995 and still going strong". On the way down they fell apart!!

Afterwards we headed into Aberfeldy and bumped into Cathy & Doug who were staying nearby and invited us back for a welcome post-walk beer, good to see them somewhere other than in an assembly field for once!

Scottish Champs M40L at Tullochrosik.

Not a race that went very well! Spiked maybe 16 of them but a few shaky routes as well. Think I have got out of the habit of planning ahead properly, not good for this sort of terrain!

Went off the start and took #1 straight, used the compass a lot but was never quite sure whereabouts on the line I was, crossed the stream before the control and the whole land shape just didn't look right at all. In retrospect I think I must have been right on line but instead headed down to the right, relocated near control #2 then unforgivably didn't take enough care and missed #1 again from there. Got to #1 to see Colin Smith punching, caught me 4 mins, not good.

Found #2 and #3 okay, thought I had climbed out of #3 but found myself at the green below #4, surprised to have to climb more. Then straight to #5, used the ride at the end of the leg ands stayed on it too long, missed too far south. Got out into the open to see Colin well ahead.

Pushed hard through the next section but careless on route choice so didn't get the full benefit, crossed the deep valley left of the line to #9, went way SE from #9 before crossed the valley and did too much extra distance - ran all the way up the hill and caught Colin at the top but taking the leg straighter would have been maybe 45secs quicker.

Took the low route to dodgy #13 which meant I found it without being confused by the extra crags, knew Colin had missed it so I dashed off to #14, didn't allow for how vague that area was, stupidly missed it left by over 2 mins, back to the flag to find Colin punching.

Went pretty well from there to the finish although struggled on the climb halfway to #16. Quick through the control pick at the end but my legs were gone by the run to the last control - no chance to hold Jon Hollingdale off on the run-in!

M40 was won by Steve Nich in an amazing 59 mins, I got past Colin in the last few but he was second in 69 mins - I was down in 7th (would have been 8th if Martin Ward hadn't missed out #17 - he would have run 67 otherwise). Good work from Jase on M35L to do 64mins, although frustratingly Ben Hartman sneaked past him in the control pick section and run to the finish and won M35 by 14 seconds. Fraser did 69 mins for 3rd on M35.

Mostly enjoyed it but should have done much better - was rubbish through the woodland early on, never really got into the map in that section and didn't take enough care to make up for that, then carelessness later on was costing time, trying to race instead of just concentrating on doing it right.

Great day for orienteering though, clear blue skies, pleasant breeze and amazing views - the area was v tough though so a bit worried about how it might be for the relay.....

(includes warm down)
Feeling totally knackered after Harvester and then late night/early morning flight. Thought I should get out though, sunny warm evening so headed to Hyde Park for a jog before the Champions League final.

Couldn't get my heart rate up though, was only around 130bpm, so decided to do a few 1000-1100m reps and see how that went....
Intervals intervals 14:00 [5]
shoes: new Brooks Adrenaline
Tried the reps route from Nov and Feb, and found it pretty hard work although without getting pulse to climb as high as expected.

Times were:
4:03 (ave heart rate 147)
3:47 (ave HR 146)
3:51 (ave HR 150)
First and third ones into the wind a bit. Had remembered previous times (never below 3:54) wrongly so thought that I was running the way I was feeling - turns out I was running okay, first one maybe affected by going straight into it without a pause beforehand.

On the other hand then actually measuring the route makes it look like it is shorter than I would have liked to think....

Huge numbers of people out in Hyde Park tonight, lots of runners, a big gathering of roller-bladers team, plenty of ad hoc games of footie - I could see that there may be times when living in a city wouldn't seem too bad....

Tuesday May 20

Note
Just seen the Harvester splits - had forgotten that there were lights visible as I approached (and then missed by a minute) the pre-spectator control at halfway - must have been Clive Hallett and Neil Northrop just leaving the flag, dammit. That would have been nice and handy for the second loop - Clive caught Dan Hartmann soon after and they were both on the same gaffle as me.........
Note
(rest day)
"Don't need to go running today as I am playing cricket tonight" - wicket keeper injured himself so I ended up keeping wicket for half their innings, then was out first ball (LBW decision, hmmm) when we batted - not much exercise there!

So a great contribution from me all round, I am sure that the team I was playing for were delighted that they had brought me in as a ringer to strengthen the team....

Cruisy post weekend recovery run with Ross and Roger, plus Beccy joined us too - weather a lot more pleasant than the last time the four of us ran together - in the pouring rain over the sodden ground before the FVO christmas meal.

Felt okay but then I didn't actually do that much running at the weekend, suffering more from lack of sleep than anything.

Sunday May 18

Orienteering race 55:42 [5]**** 6.5 km (8:34 / km)
spiked:10/17c shoes: VJ Falcon
Harvester 2008, A Course, leg one for FVO.

Somehow a discussion on 'let's be in the race from the start' had left me with leg one so felt under a bit of pressure - not that many (27 teams) in the mass start but some speedy types like Neil Northrop, Martin Ward and Clive Hallett - the latter two being my leg one partners-in-blunder from the British Relays.

Managed a bonus hour of sleep before the midnight call-up for 0030 start but my route to #1 would suggest I was half-asleep - went too fast and out of control, got off line pushing through the holly, mis-identified a path, didn't slow down or calm down and ended up bashing through lots more green before I got it sorted out and worked out I was too far left. Got to #1 and found plenty of people already there, not a great start and certainly no sign of Neil or Clive by now - just Martin who had joined me in my meanderings through the holly.

Got my head together and pushed through the next section to overtake quite a few people and make sure I got the right gaffles, got to the front of everyone I could see on the way to #6 where two or three others went too far right and I corrected quickest.

Whereupon my race settled into a pattern of getting 15/20secs ahead, missing or hesitating slightly (or in two places cautious route letting chasers cut the corner to be quicker), pretty much always getting the control first but leading the next two or three people in. In retrospect I was letting them put me off and rushing things - a number of my wobbles were leaving the control too quickly and not getting onto the best route.

Will be interested to see the splits but probably lost 90s/2 min on route to #1 and then lots of small time losses around the rest - nothing more than 1 min max but probably totalling 4 mins or so in total plus time lost at #1.

Finished in 4th place around 6 mins down on Clive and 5 mins down on Neil who was 3rd (Dan Hartmann for Shuoc was with them). Fairly satisfied with outcome but frustrated that I didn't run cleaner and come in a bit closer to the top three.

Good race all night though - great stuff from Gary who got us into the top 3 for a while. SYO ran away with it as expected, and TVOC-Delta got clear in second during the night legs. Good battle between 3rd-6th postions, Roger was pretty unlucky not to finish 4th on the final leg but Marcus sneaked past on the final loop for Shuoc and BOK (with some dodgy blocking tactics on the run-in - not to mention dodgy map exchange shenanigans) finished 1 second ahead so we ended up 6th. Ahead of SYO old men though which was pretty pleasing!

JOK Chasing Sprint M40+ prologue.

Had an early-ish start and there was a bit of bramble/nettle vegetation, not sure this made much difference time-wise though.

Missed #2 to the right and then exited it too far right and ran down wrong track, probably cost 1 min between them.

Ran fairly okay apart from that but not very smooth, was pretty much making it up as I went along rather than planning ahead, so not quite the best routes and a few hesitations.

Had volunteered to do commentary on the chase but thought I would run it if I was in contention - finished 5th in the prologue but was 3mins down on Martin W and Charlie A so settled for commentary - which gave the bonus of being able to visit Wilfs much earlier than if running the chase!

FVO training tonight was kindly staged by Clyde at their Mugdock evening event - Gary and Tori went off to do a pairs exercise, Rosco did some compass work and Elle set off to run without a compass with me shadowing her (despite trying to sneak her compass out there at the lastr minute!)

Mugdock nice as ever and a pleasant evening for it, good to get out and shake off some post-10km stiffness from the legs.

Not quite such a successful evening for Tori. who trashed her ankle on the way to #12 and had to be carried out to the road by Gary. Not so cunning although it scores her a couple more days of home comforts in Dunblane rather than returning to student flat and the library....

After being directed to a closed Italian restaurant by some dodgy locals, we found a nice Chinese restaurant instead - when we left, Tori tried to leave them a mobile phone as a tip but they kindly dashed outside to return it before she hopped it back to the car....

Running race 39:07 [5]10 km (3:55 / km) +120m 3:41 / km vdot: 53.3

Kilmarnock 10km. The idea was to run a 10km race and see what sort of time I could do......however still feeling tired quads/calf muscles a bit, plus more significantly hadn't banked on the first 4km all being uphill into a fairly strong wind! Wasn't quite as well warmed up as I should have been which didn't help - although better warmed up than Lard who was still pinning on his number when the race started....

Was struggling by the top of the hill but gradually got into it after that as the course dropped a bit with just a few tiny uphills from 4km-8km. Then it became clear we had dropped slightly more than we had gained, so there was another bigger climb in the 9th km to rejoin our original route for the downhill to the finish. Spent virtually the whole race running on my own in about 20th or so - after the first two or three kilometres no-one overtook me and i only passed one person. Probably didn't help my time not to be racing head-t-head with anyone in the second half.

As a result not really sure what to make of my time - with the wind and the climb, it didn't feel like a fast course and I would hope I could perhaps run at least a minute quicker on a flat fast course with no wind and some rest beforehand (and vdot says the climb costs two minutes....). Having said that then it didn't seem to slow Rosco down too much as he ran 33:42 for 4th place (including a 3km pb in the middle section!). And on the bright side this was my fastest time since the dim and distant days of 1990, so that will do for today, plenty of time to improve further later!

Kilometre splits were
3:56
3:59
4:10
4:13
4:02
(20:20 at half way)
7:17 for next two (ave 3:38)
3:54
7:36 for final two (ave 3:48)
(18:47 for second half)

So not too bad but can do better - need to find another 10km midweek race now!

Nice easy FVO soup run from Rosco's, spent much of it touring round the sprint course from Saturday with the occasional dash round different route choice options.

Nice gentle morning jog through yesterdays assembly field and back through the lower bit of woodland - needed to close the gates that we had forgotten to close when we left the event.

Was just starting to loosen up nicely and enjoy it, but of course hadn't left myself enough time to run for any longer before going to work....

Note
Got to work to find the Blood Donation bus in the car park. I always seem to miss this but as I had managed to eat breakfast and wasn't planning on running later on, this seemed like an ideal opportunity.

It may have been but it turned out they didn't want my blood - when they did the iron/haemoglobin check, my haemoglobin was 134g/l and their minimum threshold is 135g/l.

Hardly a major concernI as the threshold is at a cautious level (and was recently raised from 130g/l to bring UK into line with the EU). Frustrating as I think it is important to give blood if you can, and for various reasons (meetings, cold, etc) everytime the bus has showed up at work in the past couple of years then I have been unable to donate.

Some multi-vitamin/iron tablets over the next few weeks might be a good plan though - sounds like they would do no harm in any case - will give it a try.

Lovely clear-but-hazy sunny day all day with the mountains beckoning.

5.45pm Jon phones Rosco: "look at the weather, have to get out, how about going for a run up Ben Ledi?"
Rosco: "sounds steep, tough weekend, don't want to be knackered for the 10km race on Wednesday"
Jon: "good point, how about Cort-ma-Law - that is pretty flat"
Rosco: "sounds grand"

7.30pm set off, 250m climb in the first 1km, oops!

It did level off after that and treated us to a succession of false summits, good to get out and have a look before the race next month. Even in good conditions it is pretty boggy up there - as I found with an unplanned sinking/falling/splashing incident!

Didn't know the race route with the extra climb back to Cort-ma-Law ridge near the end, so had a fun downhill/flat/downhill run all the way from the top of Lecket Hill. Sounds like the race route is a bit tougher!

Second race of the (fab) FVO weekend, M40L at Scottish O-League at Touch.

Hadn't really given this race a thought in amongst planning the sprint race, woke up feeling a bit fragile, had some breakfast, checked out my start time and found it was in not long over an hour, not ideal!

Ran all the way to the start (2.5km) so that helped a lot - course was mainly uphill for the first 25 mins or so which did not help so much...

Struggled with the scale on the first two short legs in the wood but tried to push hard when out on the moor after that. Could see a Clyde top well in front, wasn't catching them and couldn't work out who it was - turns out it was Rosco on M21L which had a common section with us from our #2 to our #10 - looking at splits he pulled away from me by a huge 8 seconds through that section. Steve Nich (off first start with no tracks in the bracken) and Fraser both were quicker than us through here - Steve was about half a minute quicker than Doug T who won M21L.

Got caught 3 mins by another Clyde top with Dave Robertson inside it on the way to #13 - I knew he had me in sight and was reeling me in but couldn't do much about it. Got in front of Dave again at #14 and led him all the way to the tricky flag at #15 as we went back into the wood - somehow this got him the fastest split and I am only 4th on the leg! Maybe should have taken the easy option and run M21L as this leg was common too and they all took much longer...

Then I went a different way from Dave to #17, got confused and started navigating to #18 instead. Realised buit climbed too high for #17, then went too low to wrong crag at #18 and made a total dithering mess of the route to #19, lost 4 mins through this section.

Sorted myself out round the tricky last section in the wood in amongst all the contour detail and crags, was suffering a bit though and not going as fast as I should have been - only 3 seconds down on Martin Ward with three short easy controls left but he finished 30 seconds in front.
Steve N won in 64, impressive time particularly off first start. Dave R kept it going to do 66, Fraser was 68, then just behind me Ben did 75 and Brad did 76.

Pleased with how I ran across the moor but gave it all away through 17-18-19, would have been happy with sub 70.

Another good day and good event though - altogether a great weekend!

Scottish Sprints day finally here and seemed to go off well - people found the courses tricky and both races built up to a good finish to make it worth having numbers and commentary. A few crises early on which meant a dash back up the hill after my run round to check the sites, but problem resolved quickly - although next time I plan I will be checking myself before putting them out that all the SI units are really set up as they claim to be!

Was glad to see the top 3 in the men's race come in with times between 18 and 19 mins - up until then I was starting to wonder if anyone would break 20mins!). Had expected the winner to be between 17 and 18 mins but all the leaders lost time here and there, plus the rainstorm in the middle made parts of the course very slippery and probably slowed the later runners slightly. The rainstorm did mean that the wedding next to control #14 did not hang around outside the church for photots, so that was probably a good thing.....

Nice to see Rosco showing what he can do - a final sprint to share the victory and a second sprint to the podium to snatch the winner's bubbly before Doug T could get it!

Enjoyed the day - relieved it all went okay - big team effort from FVO as a lot of people were unable to run as they manned controls all race, major thanks to them. Felt the need for a few drinks to unwind in the evening....

Dumyat Hill Race - big FVO turn out with 13 men and 8 women there enjoying a glorious day to be out.

My plan was to try and stick a bit closer to Bradc than two weeks ago at the Whangie, then if possible get a gap at the top on the grounds that he would descend better than me. That was the plan anyway!

In practice I started slightly too fast and had to chill out a bit on the track run along the bottom of Hermitage Woods, got passed by Brad and Paddy Walder along there. Brad was not looking totally comfortable, favouring one leg ever so slightly. I felt like i was climbing along quite happily just behind them through the woods etc, was feeling okay so overtook them again part way up.

Brad got just in front of me again just before the summit (there in 26:10) and I was immediately in front of Will with Paddy just behind. Revised plan of getting off the hill with Brad in sight and try and make an effort on the final not-as-short-as-you-think gentle climb along the track below Hermitage.

Descended hard trying not to let Brad get away, and not to be distracted by all the spectators who seemed to know Will - at least it meant I knew he was still right behind without needing to look back! Didn't know where Paddy was but had forgotten he was in trainers - a defnite error for the descent!

Maybe picked up a few places but wasn't catching Brad or being caught by Will, got to the planned place and pushed really hard on the ascent to get away from Will, picked up a few places as a result including nipping past Brad who was suffering. Thought I was going to pass out or throw up just before it levelled off as my vision started to go blurry and black, but got to the flat bit, kept it going and ran scared all the way to the finish to hold them off.

Reckoned I had done pretty much all I could on the descent (15:10 for the descent) and absolutely done in at the finish, but a bit disappointed the time wasn't nearer to 40mins. Well chuffed to beat Brad and Will though, even if Brad was part crocked and Will did have a fairly large and unpleasant blister on display afterwards!

Good work by all the FVO troops - especially Ewan and Jamie and Rosco, all in the top ten (out of 264 - I was 30th).

Some token drills and jogging before the race, some token shuffling was all I could manage after the race.

Very pleasant FVO evening jaunt from chez Inman, supposed to be 'probably less than an hour' but didn't quite work out like that!

Janine had made fab soup and luckily unlike me everyone else had done as requested and brought bread'n'cakes'n'stuff so I was able to freeload. Next time I will remember. To bring stuff I mean, not that freeloading worked well!

C • didn't you leave with some bread? 2

Went for a walk with MC plus Deb and Paul and the kids, through Longshaw to Grindleford station cafe and back up Padley Gorge. I have never seen so many 'don't do that' signs in one place as in that cafe.
No mobiles.
We never change what is in full breakfast so don't ask.
Don't sit in front of the fire.
Don't take more than one serviette.
Don't look at the papers they are for buying not browsing.
Don't loiter at the serving hatch.
Don't leave your dirty plates on the tables when you leave.
Don't ask whether there are nuts in the food as we don't know either (!)
And so on.

Having said then it sells tea and hot chocolate in pint mugs, does a decent fry-up, and huge slabs of flapjack. So not too bad at all despite the grumpy impression they seem to want to give!

Felt lethargic after the three hour walk at the pace of the six year olds, but headed out from Longshaw for what turned out to be a fun run despite the rain.

Headed along White Edge to the trigpoint, cut down to Froggat Edge, back along there and through Longshaw. Had quite a tough week so knackered by the end, time to take up Dixie's suggestion of a rest day methinks.

Quite hilly and tired legs by the end.

Thursday May 1

Running warm up/down 25:00 [2]

Up Ballengeich and thru Stirling Highland, back above Kings Knot.
Intervals hills 20:00 [4]
shoes: VJ Falcon
3 times 60s hard up the hill (with flat bits!) with 30s regrouping between efforts, jog all the way down.

Did three sets.

Me, Ewan, Elle, Gary, Steve Nich on bike tonight. Not finishing the reps in that order!

Felt like it wasn't that hard a session although starting to notice it by the end. Maybe could have done another set, or maybe made a point of running off the tops of the climbs and accelerating across the flat sections. Another time....

Running 45:00 [2]
shoes: new Brooks Adrenaline
More checking of sprint race after intervals, was actually out for 90 mins but did quite a bit of standing around working out where a trestle might actually go into the ground.

Did some running efforts as well testing out various route options, maybe 5-10 mins worth.
