Event: Scottish Championships

Orienteering race 1:13:12 [5]**** 7.3 km (10:02 / km) +380m 7:57 / km
spiked:16/21c shoes: VJ Falcon
Scottish Champs M40L at Tullochrosik.

Not a race that went very well! Spiked maybe 16 of them but a few shaky routes as well. Think I have got out of the habit of planning ahead properly, not good for this sort of terrain!

Went off the start and took #1 straight, used the compass a lot but was never quite sure whereabouts on the line I was, crossed the stream before the control and the whole land shape just didn't look right at all. In retrospect I think I must have been right on line but instead headed down to the right, relocated near control #2 then unforgivably didn't take enough care and missed #1 again from there. Got to #1 to see Colin Smith punching, caught me 4 mins, not good.

Found #2 and #3 okay, thought I had climbed out of #3 but found myself at the green below #4, surprised to have to climb more. Then straight to #5, used the ride at the end of the leg ands stayed on it too long, missed too far south. Got out into the open to see Colin well ahead.

Pushed hard through the next section but careless on route choice so didn't get the full benefit, crossed the deep valley left of the line to #9, went way SE from #9 before crossed the valley and did too much extra distance - ran all the way up the hill and caught Colin at the top but taking the leg straighter would have been maybe 45secs quicker.

Took the low route to dodgy #13 which meant I found it without being confused by the extra crags, knew Colin had missed it so I dashed off to #14, didn't allow for how vague that area was, stupidly missed it left by over 2 mins, back to the flag to find Colin punching.

Went pretty well from there to the finish although struggled on the climb halfway to #16. Quick through the control pick at the end but my legs were gone by the run to the last control - no chance to hold Jon Hollingdale off on the run-in!

M40 was won by Steve Nich in an amazing 59 mins, I got past Colin in the last few but he was second in 69 mins - I was down in 7th (would have been 8th if Martin Ward hadn't missed out #17 - he would have run 67 otherwise). Good work from Jase on M35L to do 64mins, although frustratingly Ben Hartman sneaked past him in the control pick section and run to the finish and won M35 by 14 seconds. Fraser did 69 mins for 3rd on M35.

Mostly enjoyed it but should have done much better - was rubbish through the woodland early on, never really got into the map in that section and didn't take enough care to make up for that, then carelessness later on was costing time, trying to race instead of just concentrating on doing it right.

Great day for orienteering though, clear blue skies, pleasant breeze and amazing views - the area was v tough though so a bit worried about how it might be for the relay.....

Note
(rest day)
still knackered so don't really fancy a jog tonight either.

hopefully the easy week and a decent night's sleep will sort me out ready for the Scottish Champs tomorrow.............particularly as I now see that M35L are on the same course as M40L and I have Lard and FraserP both starting close behind me!

Back in time for the Rangers/Celtic season finale phew.

Definitely needed another rest day.

Running warm up/down 17:00 [3]

(includes warm down)
Feeling totally knackered after Harvester and then late night/early morning flight. Thought I should get out though, sunny warm evening so headed to Hyde Park for a jog before the Champions League final.

Couldn't get my heart rate up though, was only around 130bpm, so decided to do a few 1000-1100m reps and see how that went....
Intervals intervals 14:00 [5]
shoes: new Brooks Adrenaline
Tried the reps route from Nov and Feb, and found it pretty hard work although without getting pulse to climb as high as expected.

Times were:
4:03 (ave heart rate 147)
3:47 (ave HR 146)
3:51 (ave HR 150)
First and third ones into the wind a bit. Had remembered previous times (never below 3:54) wrongly so thought that I was running the way I was feeling - turns out I was running okay, first one maybe affected by going straight into it without a pause beforehand.

On the other hand then actually measuring the route makes it look like it is shorter than I would have liked to think....

Huge numbers of people out in Hyde Park tonight, lots of runners, a big gathering of roller-bladers team, plenty of ad hoc games of footie - I could see that there may be times when living in a city wouldn't seem too bad....

Tuesday May 20

Note
Just seen the Harvester splits - had forgotten that there were lights visible as I approached (and then missed by a minute) the pre-spectator control at halfway - must have been Clive Hallett and Neil Northrop just leaving the flag, dammit. That would have been nice and handy for the second loop - Clive caught Dan Hartmann soon after and they were both on the same gaffle as me.........
Note
(rest day)
"Don't need to go running today as I am playing cricket tonight" - wicket keeper injured himself so I ended up keeping wicket for half their innings, then was out first ball (LBW decision, hmmm) when we batted - not much exercise there!

So a great contribution from me all round, I am sure that the team I was playing for were delighted that they had brought me in as a ringer to strengthen the team....

Monday May 19

Running 43:00 [2]
ahr:119 shoes: new Brooks Adrenaline
Cruisy post weekend recovery run with Ross and Roger, plus Beccy joined us too - weather a lot more pleasant than the last time the four of us ran together - in the pouring rain over the sodden ground before the FVO christmas meal.

Felt okay but then I didn't actually do that much running at the weekend, suffering more from lack of sleep than anything.

Sunday May 18

Orienteering race 55:42 [5]**** 6.5 km (8:34 / km)
spiked:10/17c shoes: VJ Falcon
Harvester 2008, A Course, leg one for FVO.

Somehow a discussion on 'let's be in the race from the start' had left me with leg one so felt under a bit of pressure - not that many (27 teams) in the mass start but some speedy types like Neil Northrop, Martin Ward and Clive Hallett - the latter two being my leg one partners-in-blunder from the British Relays.

Managed a bonus hour of sleep before the midnight call-up for 0030 start but my route to #1 would suggest I was half-asleep - went too fast and out of control, got off line pushing through the holly, mis-identified a path, didn't slow down or calm down and ended up bashing through lots more green before I got it sorted out and worked out I was too far left. Got to #1 and found plenty of people already there, not a great start and certainly no sign of Neil or Clive by now - just Martin who had joined me in my meanderings through the holly.

Got my head together and pushed through the next section to overtake quite a few people and make sure I got the right gaffles, got to the front of everyone I could see on the way to #6 where two or three others went too far right and I corrected quickest.

Whereupon my race settled into a pattern of getting 15/20secs ahead, missing or hesitating slightly (or in two places cautious route letting chasers cut the corner to be quicker), pretty much always getting the control first but leading the next two or three people in. In retrospect I was letting them put me off and rushing things - a number of my wobbles were leaving the control too quickly and not getting onto the best route.

Will be interested to see the splits but probably lost 90s/2 min on route to #1 and then lots of small time losses around the rest - nothing more than 1 min max but probably totalling 4 mins or so in total plus time lost at #1.

Finished in 4th place around 6 mins down on Clive and 5 mins down on Neil who was 3rd (Dan Hartmann for Shuoc was with them). Fairly satisfied with outcome but frustrated that I didn't run cleaner and come in a bit closer to the top three.

Good race all night though - great stuff from Gary who got us into the top 3 for a while. SYO ran away with it as expected, and TVOC-Delta got clear in second during the night legs. Good battle between 3rd-6th postions, Roger was pretty unlucky not to finish 4th on the final leg but Marcus sneaked past on the final loop for Shuoc and BOK (with some dodgy blocking tactics on the run-in - not to mention dodgy map exchange shenanigans) finished 1 second ahead so we ended up 6th. Ahead of SYO old men though which was pretty pleasing!

C • TVOC-Delta 3
C • SYO old men 2
