Orienteering race 18:28 [5]**** 2.9 km (6:22 / km) +50m 5:52 / km
spiked:12/14c shoes: new Brooks Adrenaline
Managed to get out for a run off last start at WOC sprint test. Late decision so not very well warmed up, felt pretty heavy legged but speed not too bad.

Brain not quite there though and made two stupid errors
- spotted the blind alley trap to #5 (unlike many) so told myself "don't take the first one", turned right, ignored the correct one and went down the third one instead. Luckily it had a bend so realised quickly, still 30secs lost though.
- lost concentration on way to #7 and turned left once not twice, had to double back to correct road, another 30secs lost.
Also didn't see right hand route to #6, not sure whether that was quicker or not.

On my own for the first part but caught a few people from #8 onwards. Surprisingly sneaked into the UK Cup points but could/should have been top 30. Rosco didn't have the best start to the race and gifted me a victory over him, my two costly mistakes put me 19 secs behind Lard though, dammit.

Quick run about before starting sprint race.

Orienteering 35:00 [3]

Control collection after WOC middle test at Weston Heath. Surprised I haven't run here before - looks like a great area and really frustrating that the bracken had grown up so quickly in past two weeks, must be gorgeous in the first months of the year. Fancy coming back to run an event here sometime.

Friday Jun 6

Event: GBR WOC Selection Races (Middle and Sprint)

Note
(rest day)
Too busy plus travelling to selection races. Got to bed at 1am with alarm set for just after 6am, ideal preparation for a tiring weekend!

Orienteering 39:54 [4]**** 4.4 km (9:04 / km)

FVO evening event at Barr Wood. Just about still okay before the bracken takes it over for a few months....

Still feeling my glands and tired but felt okay running, could have run harder but still not quite feeling as I should be, getting there though - I hope.

It was my brain that was the big problem today anyway, just kept running vaguely straight and treated it as a running course with no real need to navigate even though I know it is tricky.
#1 - stopped short
#2 - couldn't find it, not helped by stray line on my map from marking it up, plus it was too low on the slope anyway.
leaving #3 - ran to fence slap bang between the two crossing points
#4 - missed it way left and overshot
#5 - marked it in the wrong place
#6 - drifted well left again
#7 - ran out of 6 with no plan, wrong way round large patch of green which took me much too far right
route to #8 - didn't have a plan and so bashed through on first part of leg instead of easy line feature

After #8 (but not until then, slow learner!) I gave myself a bit of a talking to about making the evening vaguely useful, and did the rest okay. Motivation to run the rest was helped by catching Dixie at #10 and taking a different route which got me ahead on the long leg to #11, getting ahead was a good reason to keep going at a decent pace.

Doug Tullie ran round in 31 mins, also good to see Scotia there and running most of the course, sounds like he will be okay to run the selection races, good news.

Little bit of jogging beforehand, went just far enough to see that there was some pretty tall bracken awaiting on the course....

Running 1:18:00 [3]
shoes: new Brooks Adrenaline
FVO run from Roger's in Braco.

Some gorgeous bits of forest to run through.
Saw two ospreys.
Included visit to a Roman fort.
Felt a bit better.
Nice soup afterwards.
Good banter.
Fun evening.

Monday Jun 2

Turbo Trainer 15:00 [2]
Finally got my brand new Xmas turbo trainer out of the box and assembled it.

Finally fixed the puncture on my road bike.

Gave it a try.

Puncture seems okay. Bike seemed stable on the trainer. Just need to get my legs working again now!
Stretching 10:00 [1]
Right hamstring really tight and painful after the weekend, driving normally has a bad effect on it but much worse this time. Doubtless not helped by my back, have been rubbish at doing the strengthening exercises.

Booked in with skyhigh for some treatment so thought I had better do at least some stretching of hamstring and back since my last visit!

Sunday Jun 1

Running 1:20:00 [3]
shoes: Inov8
Surprise View to Stanage Pole and back, despite two days off felt pretty sluggish and heavy-legged. Could have gone faster but not at all inspired to do so, just not feeling like I would have expected - right hamstring sore and tight which didn't help.

Had to keep reminding myself that it was only a couple of weeks ago that I was running well at Dumyat Hill Race and then was strong at the Harvester so it is not like I am suddenly unfit - maybe a bit short of sleep and run down over the past fortnight so an easy week this week will hopefully sort things out....it had better!
C • Not the most inspiring weekend 13
