Travel day 1

11 AM

Running 18:30 intensity: (58 @1) + (16:38 @2) + (54 @3) 2.0 km (9:15 / km) +178m 6:24 / km
ahr:116 max:131 shoes: VJ Falcon Oct 2019

Knee not great but it did ease off during the course yesterday so keen to try and run today.

Dosed up on ibuprofen and caffeine, ran most of the way to the start without too much trouble. So good (enough) to go...

Orienteering 45:26 intensity: (44 @1) + (12:23 @2) + (17:14 @3) + (13:01 @4) + (2:04 @5) 5.89 km (7:43 / km) +134m 6:55 / km

OO Cup Day Five
M50, 16th place. Managed to sneak into top 30 overall.

So it turns out that if you run you have less time to look at the map than if you walk...a little trouble in the circle at #1 and executing route to #2.

A bit of yelping/shouting in places (and a refusal on one descent so had to amend route) but actually moving fairly well. A few more small bits of time lost including a v annoying minute in the circle at #12, but it was just v nice to get to run another race in this terrain before heading home, much fun was had.

Another good run from Alastair L to run 36 for the win (and big overall victory), 2nd was 39mins and 3rd was 40mins.

Really well organised week in excellent terrain, hats off to the OO Cup team for managing to make it happen.

OO Cup Day 4

Planned to walk again especially after my knee didn’t like the rough stony route to the start. Set off walking but the terrain was very nice (as well as very tricky in places) and so started jogging the non-rocky bits from about 15mins in. Seemed okay so actually jogged quite a lot after that, just v cautious and back to a walk for anywhere steep or rough or rocky. Even made a mistake late on attacking a control from the wrong place on a path, oops.

Knee seems no worse afterwards so hopeful for more jogging/running being possible tomorrow. Would be nice to get another half-normal day’s orienteering out of the trip!

Orienteering 1:19:49 intensity: (39:08 @1) + (30:23 @2) + (9:49 @3) + (27 @4) + (2 @5) 5.45 km (14:39 / km) +112m 13:17 / km
ahr:103 max:153 (injured) shoes: VJ Falcon Oct 2019

OO Cup Day Three
M50, 48th place

Knee not good, walked the whole thing bar maybe 3-4 mins of jogging, just 10-20secs at a time.

Terrain very rough and pretty tricky so walking good enough for around half way down the list!

Running warm up/down 15:12 intensity: (34 @1) + (8:32 @2) + (6:06 @3) 2.26 km (6:44 / km) +65m 5:53 / km
ahr:118 max:135 shoes: VJ Falcon Oct 2019

To the start.

Orienteering 51:11 intensity: (2:36 @1) + (22:32 @2) + (26:02 @3) + (1 @4) 5.47 km (9:21 / km) +74m 8:46 / km
ahr:121 max:143 (injured) shoes: VJ Falcon Oct 2019

OO Cup Day 2, Les Moussieres
M50, 28th place. (down to 19th overall).
Al Landels and Dave Peel 31mins, 3rd place 37mins.

Uh oh - near #6 I put my leg down a limestone hole as far as my knee, just as I was changing direction. Twisted my knee. Finished today but currently swollen and painful to use so not looking too hopeful for running tomorrow. We’ll see.
And #6 was the control where they had warned us to take care nearby because there were many dangerous holes in the ground...

It was already going v badly anyway, took 7mins for the 1min leg to #2 (depression on a spur) mostly running up and down the spur past it a few times :(
Then missed #3, dropped time at #4, poor route to #5 and had just run past #6 when put my leg in the hole.
After that I missed #7 and #9 , and was part way to #13 when I realised I had skipped #12 and had to backtrack.

So not really my most successful day out in the forest! But the sun shone and they were selling cold beer in the arena. So that offset the rest fairly nicely!

Orienteering 50:15 intensity: (18 @1) + (5:32 @2) + (35:44 @3) + (6:47 @4) + (1:54 @5) 6.05 km (8:19 / km) +116m 7:35 / km
ahr:135 max:161 shoes: VJ Falcon Oct 2019

OO Cup Day 1, Col de la Faucille
M50, 14th place.

Chairlift to the arena, option also of cable car from there to the start. Fine views over Lake Geneva from the top.

First half of course in alpine pasture and ski runs with reasonable details and diffuse vegetation, second half in rough Grizedale style woodland.

Struggled to understand veg mapping off the start and v scratchy to #1, similar to #2 which I then compounded by thinking I was going to #7 and being unable to relocate. Sorted it out eventually but several minutes lost. Main difficulty thereafter was the first control in the forest, tried to use small paths in amongst all the trods and stopped way short and searching on the wrong hill. Had to go back out to edge of forest to relocate. Five mins lost. A bit scrappy through to the finish but no major dramas.

Turned out that #2 had gone missing early on so the legs either side were taken out, lucky for me! So ended up 14th around 5-6 mins off 2nd (so very doable) but nearly 10mins begins the flying Al Landels who won easily. Pretty average but could have been worse...

Edit: top 5 on half the splits but still only 14th despite one of my two biggest errors being removed. Hmm.

OO Cup training, Plans d’Hotonnes.

A pleasure to be out in this forest, quite soft going in the leaves apart from the numerous places where the limestone was sticking up. My navigation took a while to wake up...
