Running warm up/down 28:41 intensity: (3:23 @1) + (24:41 @2) + (37 @3) 3.76 km (7:37 / km) +25m 7:23 / km
ahr:107 max:139 shoes: VJ Falcon Feb 2023

Warmup and then to the start. Initially struggling a lot after last night (when of course I failed to warm down), managed to improve things a bit by the time i started. A bit.

Orienteering race 51:48 intensity: (5 @0) + (1:05 @1) + (30:07 @2) + (19:19 @3) + (1:09 @4) + (3 @5) 7.67 km (6:45 / km) +148m 6:10 / km

UKOL race, New Forest (Long Beech and Kings Garn Gutter)
M55, 2nd place. Winner Martin W 48:34
(but 7th on Blue behind NickB and Quentin both 41 and Clive 44).

Course distance 6.8km. Nicer forest today although not as totally clear underfoot as I remember the New Forest being from back in the day!
Couple of legs when it may have been quicker to go round but as i) I was struggling for speed and ii) I need to be fitter then decided to go straight anyway.

Small miss at #7, lost my nerve 20m before the control and decided I had made parallel error, luckily a nearby path showed me quickly that I was correct initially.

More worryingly I put my foot in a hole whilst mapreading between 10 and 11, extended my knee which protested quite loudly for the rest of the course whenever tweaked or twisted. Not sure that is a good reason for blithely running past the penultimate and heading for the wrong stream junction, a pointless 90sec or so gone there.

Beautiful sunny day and a total pleasure to be in the New Forest, really enjoyed it.

Running 12:38 intensity: (1:35 @1) + (3:07 @2) + (7:56 @3) 1.51 km (8:21 / km)

Bought some new shoes (well done VJ for listening to feedback and reverting the Falcons back to a wide fit with the new model). Warmed up in them and decided it wasn't a big risk just to wear for the race too....

Orienteering race 1:01:55 intensity: (39 @1) + (9:51 @2) + (36:46 @3) + (13:35 @4) + (1:04 @5) 9.13 km (6:47 / km) +74m 6:31 / km

British Night Champs, Moors Valley
M55L, 1st place!

Plan was to keep it controlled and then push on if possible in the last part. Did that pretty well, terrain generally pretty rough so hard to tell at times whether the cutting of blocks vs running round decisions had been good or not.

Small wobble at 4 (wrong side of the thicket) and maybe 25-30sec at 5 with poor direction, bounced off the track. Unsure in the circle at 9 (veg shape just before seemed odd) and definitely bad route to 10, too long in the terrain (bad direction) and then so keen to stay out of the terrain for the rest of the leg that ran too far round. Probably lost a minute at 10.

Got it going after that (could see terrain to 11 would be v rough so went very straight to minimise it, splits suggests that was a good plan). Took the track route round to 17 to make sure I had the rest of the course in my head and then just tried as hard as I could from there back. Got into the lead for the first time at 18 with two controls and three minutes left to go...

Nice to win (won before in 2007 and 2017), a decent field even if the GB M55 standard in POM for the weekend has been pretty high too!

Running 5:38 intensity: (1:05 @1) + (4:33 @2) 0.84 km (6:41 / km)
ahr:108 max:122 shoes: Nvii Forest 1

Long enough to conclude that the broken studs on my NVii shoes definitely hurt my feet too much to be able to run in them. Just time for a hasty change into trusty well worn Falcons…

Orienteering 55:07 intensity: (5:39 @2) + (16:17 @3) + (26:21 @4) + (6:50 @5) 7.26 km (7:35 / km) +159m 6:51 / km

FVO night, Biggins Wood - new area!
Had a lot of fun tonight, nice terrain with technical challenge, well gaffled so lots of to-and-fro with different people at different times, and actually surprisingly relevant terrain in places for Saturday too.
