First day of 2018 Masters Nationals.

I was not sure how I would do with this large amount of climb, so from the beginning I knew I would not be doing very much running.

Out of start, along the trail and then climbed up to the edge of the golf course. Dropped into the ditch between the cliffs and then down to #1 between the cliff and rock.

#2 was just a short distance away, but I got stuck shimmying along a smallish dirt ledge that was crumbling underneath me and also had some large sticks in the way. I sat down and sort of slid under the sticks and down the side of the slope a bit until I could reach the control.

Over the hilltop and down across the trail toward 3. Being very careful moving among all the pits, also checked a few too many before finding mine. Then a short hop up to 4, no problem.

Down the reentrant keeping the longer hill on my right, checked off the pits/depressions and right to 5. Out to the trail and along it until I could see 6, then climbed to it.

For the long leg, climbed up to the fence and ran along it, then up the road, cut through the cabin area, and went down the trail (and long wooden steps) and to the bottom of the rock group for 7.

Climbed back up the steps and took the trail to 8, but dropped down a bit to early and was working out where I was as a number of people came contouring across. Turned left and went a bit further around the hillside and found it.

Down the hill to the road - oh so tempting to just retire with the visitor center right there! Climbed up to the left of the big cliff, along the trail just for a second, then up to the left of the next big cliff. Lots of people in here with me around 9.

Went up to the big bend in the cliff, crossed the ditch, compass across the hilltop (saw another course control in large reentrant) then down between the cliffs to 10.

Over to the trail - briefly confused as I was reading the large depression as a large knoll because the tags are printed so small. But the trail bends made sense so I disregarded that and attacked anyway. The contours around 11 are also misprinted - some cross over each other, some just end, etc. and at the moment I couldn't figure out why it looked such a mess. I just went along the hillside and happened into the control pretty quickly.

Back to the trail and up to 12. At this point I was so done with climbing, the leg to 13 looked eternal, and I wasn't sure if I could find the fence since I hadn't seen it when between 9 and 10. But I had noticed some pink streamer tape, and it turned out that was on the short side, and the long side was easy to follow. So I did until the large reentrant, then cut over the hilltop, and the line of rocks had a control on the end of it so that was easy to spot and follow them down to 13.

Over the little hilltop to 14 - I had some spatial weirdness here with the hill shape, but ignored it and listened to my compass which was right. I could pretty much see 15 from there. And then down the spur toward the go control, but then I got stuck atop the cliffs momentarily where I could see finish but not work out how to get down. I ended up dropping left, crossing through the stream, and then it was go control and done.
