DVOA Hay Creek - Green

I was a little tentative going back here after last summer's event. In fact, I woke up thinking that I hate Hay Creek (I think what I really meant is that I hate summer orienteering!) Redemption for me and the map thanks to Erik's nice courses (and the month of March.)

My left calf hurt yesterday, so I rested it, and still hurt this morning, but I felt a big knot in it in the shower and massaged it out some. It was better, though not perfect, but didn't hurt as long as I kept moving.

Beautiful open woods. Pretty much bang on into every control, although sometimes I took around rather than through routes on the longer legs. (Took trails from 8 to 9, could see the big rocky hilltop from the trail W of it. 10-11 I took right hand route on the trail South and then attacked from the dot knoll on the hilltop South of the control. Arrived there at the same time as the people who had been at 9/10 with me and cut through the woods.)

Not sure about the weight... I couldn't believe that 5.5 pounds came off in two days, but I checked it again in the bathroom and then moved the scale to another room in case there was a gravitational anomaly in there. The same all three times. Or maybe the battery is just dying.

Manheim Township Community Park. I wonder when I will finally run out of new parks :-)

Rest day tomorrow (or maybe walking if I feel good enough) before tackling Hay Creek. Kind of exhausted.

Lesson on Rigbie. Had a different instructor tonight as the usual is on a trip. Got some good advice and insight... nice to have a different set of eyes and set of tools once in a while.

Greider Park, another new place, mostly in the open. It was cold and windy. Had pants but no long sleeves in running bag. Doh.

DVOA Governor Dick - Green

Started out fine on west side of the map. Woods nice and open this year with scattered patches of thorns. I was a little scared of going into the green rocky section (never on that part of the map before) but it actually wasn't as bad as I pictured. I missed 8 slightly high and hit the trail, but as soon as I turned I could see the bag from the trail. Loved the neat area around 11 with little waterfalls and everything, and the chute of white woods between the rock patches on the way to 12. Had seen 13 on the way to 10 which made it easy.

At this point all the hard stuff was done and I headed up the trail toward 14. Well, until I thought I could cut a corner and instead got caught up in the cliffs and pulled west. I saw a bag and bailed from the woods to it, finding myself at a trail junction, but not sure which one. (Ended up it was the one I had attacked 7 from earlier, but I hadn't noticed the bag then.) I started heading east to relocate myself, found the multi-trail junction SE of the control, then finally realized where I was. So that's how my worst mistake came on the easiest control of the day.
