DVOA McKaig Night-O - Green

Fun Night-O in a cool little park. The place is mainly two big hill masses and we went up both of them a few times. No real navigational troubles. This is a good confidence building place for Night-O as you can pretty much see the lights of nearby houses from anywhere and it has lots of big, useful features. Cool controls were 3 (a manmade object which turned out to be a table in the middle of the woods with a bucket full of Chris's rubber chickens) and 14 (a ruin which was really a huge old chimney and fireplace, and despite it being enormous you really didn't realize this until you were on top of it). There was also a bonfire between 11 and 12 for the beginners to stop, which made it a little hard to figure out how to get over to control 12. Chris had also put out toy animals along the course for the kids to take, like a treasure hunt, but I only saw one (an elephant sitting on a trail sign).

First mistake almost right off the bat, after 131 I headed for 133 but was looking around the wrong building (looking now, also think the area across from the plaza no longer matches the map, which contributed.) Ended up finding 132 first and then realizing what I had done and getting 133, although the circle here also doesn't well represent where the flag was actually located. (Ran into that a few times today.) Felt like I lost a lot of time but apparently it was only a minute or less.

When I got to 119, I did not see it (also the clue is a manmade object but the circle is most definitely centered on a tree) so I was looking at all things in the area when Jan, coming back from 118, told me he had heard that 119, 120, and 121 were all missing. So I continued to 118, then headed to 121, which was being replaced just as I was arriving. 120 had also been replaced. Pin punched the map on both of those.

112 was another that didn't quite match up, but it was on the SE pond corner instead and I saw it when approaching. 111 was cool, a helicopter. I then proceeded to fold my map such that I reached the first bridge and thought the control should be here despite it being way too soon and the bridge angle being wrong. Unfolded and looked again - oops - lost a little time here.

126 was cool, garden under a building with a neat red and white glass opening above it. 127 was another phantom feature, with nothing there on the map but in reality a small square fenced area. Between 109 and 108 down a lottttt of steps. 105 and 106 were cool little garden areas within alcoves on a building, though 106 was up some stairs not represented by the map and it took a second to figure out, but I saw people coming down.

Not much to say on the rest. I didn't have a good plan for how to work in 124 so that one was last.

QOC College Park Score-O - on bike
Distance from Garmin

124-123-116-101-117-102-103-106-105-104-107-108-109-125-127-126-110-111-112-113-120-121-119-118-115-122-134-132-133-131

Back out on the bike. I decided I would do a different order, which pretty much ended up meaning I did the same order in reverse with one or two exceptions. I tried to keep the most hilly parts toward the beginning while I still had some energy, as I'm not strong at climbing on the bike.

Overall, I was actually slower on the bike than on foot which surprised me. However, there were some places where the bike couldn't go and required longer routes. Because of this I apparently covered more distance. I had to get off and back on at pretty much every control, sometimes going partway on foot if there were stairs, etc. There were quite a lot of places where sidewalks didn't have curb cuts. And going back between 108 and 109 I had to carry the bike up all those steps as there was no other real logical way to get there. I also walked it for quite a while in a grassy section between 101 and 103, and up a few hills including the last time past the plaza going to 131.

I also took a detour between 110-111 looking for a bathroom as my digestive system was suddenly not happy. Unfortunately, while the parking areas were full of tons of porta potties, none of them had any paper (most seemed to have beer cans instead). Managed to live until the end of the ride until I could find real bathrooms in the Student Union.
