Skipped Mt Penn to do the Combined Test at the barn (I may have attempted to do both if time allowed, but it didn't work out, and the weather was so suddenly hot and humid anyway that it might have made things tough.)
Stepped down to Intro level (fences about 2'3") instead of Beginner Novice (fences about 2'7") since my partnership with Shorty is fairly new and has been a little rocky.
Warmed up, then headed to dressage, which was ok. A little rushed, and he doesn't really bend well so our circles were only moderately circular.
Out to the arena for jumping. We could choose one fence for a warmup and I chose number 6, a wooden pallet jump which was new in the arena and had given some others issues. (All of the other jumps we had seen and jumped in lessons, and some of them were higher then too.) He jumped that fine twice and we started the course.
I got left behind a bit over 2, and had to sit back up fast for a quick left turn to the wishing well at 3. I wanted to jump 4 from right to left and go to the left of the jump behind it (2) but ended up with an approach that forced me to go right, making the turn back to the 5-6 line a little awkward. 5 was fine but he started balking and I could feel him wanting to duck out to the left at 6, even after we were successful with it in warmup. So he got a little left spur and did in fact jump as I let out some kind of inadvertent feral cowboy whoop. The last three jumps were the cleanest part of the course, but we got over everything with no penalties, and that landed us in third place overall.
