kayaking (kayak-o) 2:16:54 [3]

Canoe/Kayak-O on the Schuylkill River and canal. It was a score-o but there was really only one place where it made sense to shake up the order. It started at Fitzwater Station/Port Providence Paddle where I rented a kayak. Paddled up the canal getting the first two controls in a culvert and at a stream under the railroad bridge. Then had to climb out at Lock 60 for the portage over to the river. There was a control on land here.

Back in on the river side, headed downstream. The first control was in a creek outlet on the back side of an island. Got into a bit of current here. The next control was tucked back in behind a peninsula, but I saw a channel that cut across and went through there rather than go down and tuck back in behind the peninsula. The water in the channel was pretty swift (though not especially deep) and Dave M coming in behind me managed to overturn his sit-on-top. He was okay and I chased his map down while he got back in his boat.

The next few involved weaving in between some islands to get controls on the far sides of them, then there was one on a tiny island mostly consisting of a few trees (complete with a rubber chicken peeking out of a hole in a tree, signature of course setter/event mastermind Chris.)

The next few would involve paddling back upstream a bit no matter what order you chose, so I opted to just do them in numerical order. 39 was under a railroad bridge in a tributary (more chickens here wedged in the rocks) and 40 was on a fallen tree in the water further down. I got a bit hung up on the tree trunk getting into it, but found some deeper water on the way out. Backtracking to the main body of the river again.

Now it was a paddle upstream between two islands to get to the control on a smaller island. This was probably the most difficult part of the day. The current was pretty strong and it was hard to get into the island in just the right place to get the control. The next control was very close, on the mainland at a clearing where a trail came out. Then another on a large island and arrival at the second portage.

There were two controls on land here in opposite directions, so I left my boat and went to each of them, then came back to drag the kayak over to the canal. Once back in the canal it was just a matter of paddling up to the finish control, which was on a cool ruin.

A fun day, and nice to get out and do something a little different, and then catching up with everybody over a meal at the Fitz.

New running shoes, in which I soon hope to do some actual running. I went to a running store, got some advice, and opted for a different brand this time although there were some Asics in my possible selections. These feel very light and are soft on top which should help my saddle bone deformity.

Unfortunately, losing daylight fast and it's getting more and more difficult to squeeze anything in at parks right after work, limiting me to darkness in the neighborhood.

Also a physical today, mostly ok, and a tetanus shot.
