Flying Pig XXIII - Kiser Hollow/Carter Caves State Resort Park - Green A (F35+)

Second day of 2018 Masters Nationals.

Happy to have less climb today, but the terrain (while still cool) was not quite as epic.

Out of start, up to corner of parking lot, down to road, and followed ditch to the bend for 1.

Down hill to trail, crossed trail and ditch, up toward 2, could see pink streamer hanging higher before I could see the bag in the pit.

Over to the line of cliffs and followed the base. Stopped to get a bit closer to first cliff control even though I was sure it wasn't mine (building right above it) but without glasses the 48 looked to similar to my 46 so just checking. Continued on to correct cliff for #3.

Climbed out to the ride, compass and collecting features to 4. Nice downhill to a cool feature at 5. Followed indistinct trail out to ride, passing right by 9, on way to 6. Once I hit ride, went down to the bend and trail to the ruin.

Back out to the ride headed to 7, accidentally cut in a bit early so followed along top of cliffs then found trail/wire fence intersection and ducked in for 7. Back to the trail and used rocky death pit to attack 8. Back to the trail again and took it back out to the ride, then followed the indistinct trail for my second visit to 9.

Kept on indistinct trail to vicinity of 5, then climbed up to trail and aimed for corner of field to find 10.

Across field to large trail and single tree and down the hill to 11. I was still working out what to do for 12 during this leg, when I finally saw the northern route.

So from 11, trails up to the road, through campground, down through the trails to attack 12. And from there just the trails up to 13 and finish.

Finishing everything was good for 2nd place. I never expected to come close to Cristina (and didn't) and I guess Allison didn't come after all so she was my only competition.

Flying Pig XXIII - Raven Bridge/Carter Caves State Resort Park - Green A (F35+)

First day of 2018 Masters Nationals.

I was not sure how I would do with this large amount of climb, so from the beginning I knew I would not be doing very much running.

Out of start, along the trail and then climbed up to the edge of the golf course. Dropped into the ditch between the cliffs and then down to #1 between the cliff and rock.

#2 was just a short distance away, but I got stuck shimmying along a smallish dirt ledge that was crumbling underneath me and also had some large sticks in the way. I sat down and sort of slid under the sticks and down the side of the slope a bit until I could reach the control.

Over the hilltop and down across the trail toward 3. Being very careful moving among all the pits, also checked a few too many before finding mine. Then a short hop up to 4, no problem.

Down the reentrant keeping the longer hill on my right, checked off the pits/depressions and right to 5. Out to the trail and along it until I could see 6, then climbed to it.

For the long leg, climbed up to the fence and ran along it, then up the road, cut through the cabin area, and went down the trail (and long wooden steps) and to the bottom of the rock group for 7.

Climbed back up the steps and took the trail to 8, but dropped down a bit to early and was working out where I was as a number of people came contouring across. Turned left and went a bit further around the hillside and found it.

Down the hill to the road - oh so tempting to just retire with the visitor center right there! Climbed up to the left of the big cliff, along the trail just for a second, then up to the left of the next big cliff. Lots of people in here with me around 9.

Went up to the big bend in the cliff, crossed the ditch, compass across the hilltop (saw another course control in large reentrant) then down between the cliffs to 10.

Over to the trail - briefly confused as I was reading the large depression as a large knoll because the tags are printed so small. But the trail bends made sense so I disregarded that and attacked anyway. The contours around 11 are also misprinted - some cross over each other, some just end, etc. and at the moment I couldn't figure out why it looked such a mess. I just went along the hillside and happened into the control pretty quickly.

Back to the trail and up to 12. At this point I was so done with climbing, the leg to 13 looked eternal, and I wasn't sure if I could find the fence since I hadn't seen it when between 9 and 10. But I had noticed some pink streamer tape, and it turned out that was on the short side, and the long side was easy to follow. So I did until the large reentrant, then cut over the hilltop, and the line of rocks had a control on the end of it so that was easy to spot and follow them down to 13.

Over the little hilltop to 14 - I had some spatial weirdness here with the hill shape, but ignored it and listened to my compass which was right. I could pretty much see 15 from there. And then down the spur toward the go control, but then I got stuck atop the cliffs momentarily where I could see finish but not work out how to get down. I ended up dropping left, crossing through the stream, and then it was go control and done.

Flying Pig XXIII - Camp McKee Middle - Green A (F35+)

Out of start, down the trail a bit, immediately cut over to the next trail, planning to look for the black x but didn't see it. So I went in toward the stream, figured out where I was, and climbed up to the control.

Kept climbing from there up to the trail, went S almost to the junction and then followed the spur down to #2.

Continued along the stream to the trail, W on trail, then at junction N on trail to where the two lumps were. Went down the spur along the tops of the reentrants to the control, which was a bit further in than I thought.

Went back out the spur the same way, N on the trail to the bend, and attacked 4. Climbed back to the trail again, took the second left, through the campsite to #5. Then through the campsite to the N, E along the big trail, down the other trails past the shooting range and into 6 off the field corner.

Up to the ride and over the little hilltop to 7, back across the ride and down to the stream and then followed the logging paths to the stream and contoured over to 8.

Back out to the small field and along the trail, dipping in to get 9 and 10. Across the stream and climbed up to the large building, then sprint-like feel running to 11 and 12 and across the narrow concrete bridge to finish.
