You would think I'd do better in the area with more trails, but maybe it was the slightly bigger hills that made a difference. Very clean except - at 3 I came into it left, and for some reason thought I was right of it instead (based on where I saw deadfall) so a little bobble there. Used trail-road-trail to the right route from 7-8, which may not have been that advantageous, but I just didn't feel like doing up and down through the woods there.

Overall a very good, fun, and confidence building weekend! I loved how nice the majority of the woods were too - no rock, no thorns, no pushing through green stuff.

I was a little worried going into this event because I knew the map had no trails and it would be difficult to recover from any mistake. I've also done very little difficult or technical orienteering in the past year aside from West Point and the Masters Nationals - a lot of sprints and a lot of local maps with big trail networks.

My plan was to take it easy and keep map contact at all times. The first 6 controls went very well and I was in control and felt good. On the way to 7 I followed the stream and then angled toward it from the end - but I could recognize that the deadfall and such was pushing me around. I felt like I had gone far enough and the terrain appeared to be starting to head downhill - so I looped back to my right and the control was there. So a little miss on that one.

8 went fine and then 9 was the only big error of the day. I thought I'd be able to see the big green blob and stay north of it, but it wasn't that distinct in reality. Then I hit a ditch that I couldn't place (actually the stream) and then I was in nice woods but had no idea of my location. So new plan - go down to the stream junction and reattack. On the way there I crossed a broad reentrant and THOUGHT it might be the one with the ditch in it NW of the control and then ran into a control that I THOUGHT might be the smaller reentrant (or bend of the bigger one) but I wasn't sure and didn't want to make a risky choice. (It turned out I was right.) Anyway, going to the stream junction and reattacking worked just fine and then the last control and finish were fine too.
