O race 1:36:38 [4] *** 9.3 km (10:23 / km)
22c shoes: Inov8 Mudroc

In a sense this was actually not a bad race for me because I recovered from very bad concentration to better concentration at the end. When I went out, I was rushing, distracted and suffering from the worst allergies I've had in a while. I made a huge careless mistake on #1, costing me about 10 minutes in time and a great deal of energy. After that, I was trying to settle down but still rushing to "make up" for that mistake, and consequently made more but smaller errors. the good part was that the errors got smaller until I actually had a better second half than first half. The split times reflect this, showing improvements in my place on the second half.

On the leg from 19 to 20 I had a thought that I could really use practice on following contours. I saw Dan Q at 19 and we left simultaneously. I went directly across the hill aiming a "bit" right of the control and he went to the right around the contour w/out gaining elevation. I saw him on the other side already gettining ahead of me My method was crude and left me more tired and less sure of how far to the left I still needed to move to get to the control while his had the advantage of using less climb, and maintaing better awareness of the terrain. Hence, he knew how much further along the slope to go for the control, while I was basically keying off him at this point. I gotta figure out how to do that. . . .
