O race 1:48:50 [4] *** 8.9 km (12:14 / km)
19c shoes: Inov8 Mudroc

sunny and pleasant day - the woods were damp and muddy. The vegetation is still green tangled and thick in places. No bugs however.

Oddly, I didn't think I did that bad in this race when I finished -I suppose because I had no huge parallel errors or major moments of confusion. . . . then I saw my time. Darn.

The split analysis tells the tale, showing three significant mistakes of over 7 minutes each - which added up to over 22 minutes - which means my effort was, in fact, bad.

The mistakes were on controls 6, 15 and 18. The problem on 6 was bad planning - or no planning. I just took a vague stab at the control after coming off the stream/reantrant and missed it in the woods. I went out to the road to relocate - which upon looking back was a long way to go. It would be good to have some sort of idea of a back-up plan to execute when the "vague stab" doesn't work. . . .
On # 15 I made a bad route choice through a big "open field" that turned out to consist of thick chest-high grass, which lead to waist-high grass woven through with thorns, briars and horse-nettle plants, which lead to more chest-high grass mixed with pokeweed and devils-club trees. really nasty yucky stuff. My knees are still scratched and itchy.

On 18 I could not find the control in the circle and ended up trying to "micro" navigate the tiny marked features - which is something I can't really do well ever, even if I can see the map, which I cound not here.
