Saturday May 31

Note
(rest day)
Rest day, I think not - gardening, housework, tidying... wine to finish.

Friday May 30

Walk 15:00 [1] 1 km (15:00 / km)
It's Health Week! Joined in the 1km walk round the school grounds, had to stop at the half way point at the drinks station. Finished with a big cheer from the big boys and girls - where were they on Wednesday?
Note
(rest day)
Trying to muster up some enthusiasm for some housework, it's not working...

Pilates 45:00 [1]
Seem to have wrenched or pulled something in my shoulder and is causing some pain. That's what happens if you hover in the plank position...

Knock of Crieff Hill Race. It was a spooky misty night, with darkness looming - it was suggested that I should maybe take a head torch - huh! In fact, not such a bad idea as it was pretty black through the woods and called for some luck and fancy footwork to avoid twisting any ankles or slipping in the mud.

Anyway, I thought it would be a good idea to do a race rather than do the WEE O at Mine Woods in the hope that it would improve my faster running skills. As it turned out, I lost sight of anyone in front once we got into the trees and I thought that I had got into a comfortable last position until I heard a guy behind saying: "I'm the last one" to the marshal. He proceeded to repeat this to all the other marshals along the way and this made me even determined to keep him off my tail, I couldn't face the embarrassment of being last again. With this in mind, I dug in and ran as fast as I could on the downhill just to make sure! There were good times from the rest of the FVO posse with Rosco in second place winning a cheque and free entry for next year.

Run 1:10:00 [4]
shoes: Brooks GTS
Blowy evening run up onto Dumyat with Elle, JonX and Rosco. I wasn't feeling too great to start with and my legs felt really heavy and sluggish up the hills - the worst I'd felt on a run for a while. I tried my best and, believe it or not, I did run all the way up that steep slope but I would have been quicker walking. The guys and Elle were very good at coming back to make sure I was still moving! Further up we stopped at a fence to chat about fence crossing techniques - personally I've wasted crucial minutes crossing fences, not to mention damages to life and limb but I don't think I'll ever perfect the art of hurtling over at great speed?

We made it up as far as the fort and all had a lie down (mostly to minimise the gusts of wind) to have a chat whilst taking in the view. On the way down I felt decidedly dizzy and faint - lack of water, food and low iron levels most probable cause so headed back down to the track where we met Gary running up. Gary joined us for the flying lessons down the Sheriffmuir Road to the Uni - it's soooo steeeeep! I stopped at the shop to get some Lucozade and felt a bit better, although remind me not to buy the fizzy one next time.

Scottish Orienteering Championship Relays. Was unexpectedly promoted to one of the FVO womens open teams - thankfully the (not quite as fast) team with Cathy and Rona, otherwise I would really have panicked! Was very flattered to be asked. Thought I'd better do my best but despite getting all the controls in a pretty good orderly fashion, I might as well have been a snail for the day... I ran pretty much the whole way round and hardly saw a soul - where were the people to run with, relays were supposed to be fun, I thought - but perhaps not on third legs... Rona welcomed me at the finish, which was lovely but was astonished when our team were called to the podium for third place behind FVO and EUOC - fantastic! Perfect end to a fabulous weekend.

Scottish Championships 2008. Stunning location with perfect weather, what else could you ask for - a perfect run to win - hmm, a very tall order indeed. Felt ghastly on the way to the start, my cold had not gone away and my body temperature and heart rate went a bit haywire, fluctuating in the sunshine and cooler shady bits, but told myself that it was probably down to pre-race nerves and would go away - it did. I was worried about being late for my start and had set off wearing my shades - oh dear! Met Becks coming down from the start having decided she wasn't well enough to run (very wise - she was wearing her hrm), she kindly took my shades away with her.

Arrived at the start just in time -4 mins! Had a quick glance at the map in the box, stretched a bit and then I was off into the woods... went incredibly cautiously to #1, was lucky with #2 as I wasn't entirely sure where I had crossed the stream but picked up the re-entrant next to the crag - phew! Didn't go far enough for #3 and wasted time standing still (scratching my head in a Stan Laurel sort of a way) about 100m NE of the control, relocated on the open further to the NE and raced to the control. Decided on a very safe route around the ride/veg boundary to #4 but probably lost a minute on others here. Helena Nolan caught me at the fence crossing, I took a more direct route to #5 but she pulled away from me between #6 and #7 as I faffed a bit over the marshy bits and then mis-read the code at #7 and did a U turn to dib it - oops! Saw her again up the horrific mountaineering section to #8 before I got buried in the heather and blaeberries on the ridge section when my legs turned to jelly. Couldn't believe that I still had 5 controls still to go and didn't like the look of the brown squoosh of contours between #9 and #10 but somehow found my legs again on the downhill and trundled uneventfully round the last wee loop. All in all it was a skoosh navigationally (apart from #3) but I guess I didn't run fast enough through the rough stuff to get a better time. Thoroughly delighted to get a podium place next to team mates Beccy O (1st) and Jen L (2nd) but at least I won't have to polish that big trophy... I'm sure Brad will have a spare duster - just the job for Beccy!

WEE at Callendar Park. Was going quite well until I went on a magical mystery tour on the way to #5 and then later on found myself amongst the roddys near #11... it's amazing how much time you can lose whilst lost in the undergrowth. Infinitely better and more enjoyable than last week's epic - thank you Gary, Louise and Abi!
Note
Midges are out - remember to pack Avon spray oil repellant and midge nets for the weekend.

Run (LSD) 1:55:13 [3] 16 km (7:12 / km) +350m 6:29 / km
shoes: Brooks GTS
Started out from Beecraigs - the whole world and his dog (shoes unscathed) seemed to be there - a bit of a change from my Friday morning visits... Ran up over Cockleroy, Wairdlaw and Cairnpapple Hill and back round rest of Beecraigs loop very slowly and with backpack containing various LAMM type paraphernalia! Got a few funny looks but did I care - not a bit, although not sure whether it was because I was running, running with a back pack or whether it was because I had tucked my top into my lycras (I know this is such a bad look, Louise) but it was the only way to stop it disappearing up under the waist straps of my backpack! Arrived back at the park just in time for an ice-cream - mmm.

Beecraigs perimiter plus Cockleroy but without my chums today, they're doing the ladies 10K in Glasgow on Sunday, so no chatting. Intended to do an intesity 3 as recovery run but ended up being a 4 and shaved another 8 mins off my PB.

Times for this route so far...

Grass cutting with non-sit-on mower - good core activity. Had to restrain Elle from tootling down the motorway on the L's sit-on mower on the grounds that it wasn't very good for the environment...

WEE Sauchie Crags - hard core rough, rough, rough. First run for a week and after my cold so wasn't exactly feeling like doing this at all. I didn't like this area for the club champs and I like it even less now... Set off without my compass (glad I went back to get it), tripped over most of the brashings, got my hair well tangled in the trees and generally got into some of the grottiest bits of forest imaginable and messed up several controls as well. Not a good WEE for me. Poor Hugh was left to collect the controls as everyone left immediately after their run, no volunteers to collect - I wonder why...

Felt bad so manned a control at the Sprint instead - it was fun watching everyone come in and out of the courtyard from different directions and some couldn't decide which way to get out again... Wasn't fun standing in the downpour! Lots of photos to follow - only a few posed!

First Dumyat Hill Race! Fabulous evening and a good turnout from the FVO posse. Wasn't sure how to pace myself having not run to the top from the bottom before. Thankfully JonX had taken us on a dark wet night up the steep bit through the woods so I knew what to expect there - it was a toughy! I was surprised to see the first guy descend so soon as he appeared over a blind summit - I nearly jumped out my skin... then they came at me like a swarm of bees - arms flailing everywhere! Passed people towards the summit and it took a few minutes for my legs to stop feeling like jelly on the decent before getting going properly and fast downhill - this was the best bit... the worst bit was at the bottom of the hill on the uphill part of the track where I had a wee walk: I was thoroughly pooped and demoralised! Didn't help when a guy passed me here especially when I had overtaken him several times on the uphill! Glad to see a welcoming FVO posse on their warm down - thanks guys! Aim for next year - under the hour. Good chat at the Westie after.

39.14 to the top
23.34 to the bottom 234/260 - not last!

Tuesday May 6

Run 37:00 [3]
shoes: Brooks GTS
Missed the FVO posse soup run as was on baby-sitting duties - I lost the coin toss with Brad! Still, went out when they all came back. Ran up to the monument towards Sherrifmuir and back, it was a lovely evening and wasn't alone as some deer joined in beside me in the field - fantastic! Good soup from Auntie Nine (Skyhigh).

Sunday May 4

Note
(rest day)
Ironing is the dullest sport on earth but perhaps if I did it more often than once every three weeks it wouldn't be so BORING!!!!! Anyway, was thinking about my vdot and wondering how much time I took off my "10K time" - 6.17mins. This is incredible, well it would have been if I had actually run one this century... now I'm going to have to do a 10K to find out if the vdot works...

Saturday May 3

Gardening 5:00:00 [2]
shoes: Wellies
Huge effort to put the garden in order - it looks great but I look terrible and feel broken! Maybe five hours was a bit long without a break...

Friday May 2

Run (Terrain) 1:10:02 [4]
shoes: Inov8 Mudclaw
Beecraigs outer loop including Cockleroy with Sally. Shaved some more seconds off but definitely could have gone faster... Weather was gorgeous this morning but still boggy underfoot.

Thursday May 1

Note
All better now. Jippy tummy was nothing to do with 3km time trial nerves but probably a bug from work as a few of my work colleagues were also suffering.
