| orienteering race 1:08:29 [5] 7.66 km (8:56 / km) +220m 7:49 / km | ||
| Such a better race. Pre-ran which meant getting up at Six, the sky was about as light as the 4th leg of the Jukola was for me, and woods were very wet with dew. I had decided mentally to relax my expectations for the woods a little bit and that seemed to make the difference. The forest was the same but I didn't try to beat the woods and felt more like I was trying to flow more on the running.
first control I went way right, along the swamp the entire way, just because I was remembering Saturday and wanted to have a better time running. I think that this route choice was slow, but it was a great way to work myself into the map. really flowing well and started to think that I was having a good race today, maybe even enough to pick up some places... and this really affected me going to 13. A pretty vague area that put up red flags when I looked at it, because I knew there was a great potential for running right past the flag. However, I ignored my warning bells and decided to keep running hard with the intent of ( I assume) "bumping into it". I got quite lucky and recognized a patch of clearing near the circle and relocated to find the flag.... still probably lost 20-30 seconds on a plan that was basically "let's hope I get lucky". I bobbled 14 too, because I was too worried about getting across the powerlines and didn't get out to the trail that would have been the logical attackpoint. spiked 15, and messed up coming out to 16. 16 was another control that had the warning flags up as being in a "tricky area" which again I ignored to my near peril. I cut up from the road junction and was checking things off nicely until I came across other control flags. And checked them all eventhough they weren't even on the right features. I finally got smart and recognized the patch of green near the circle and picked up the flag. Good thing the race was over at that point, because I was clearly itching to make a really big mistake. still, much better than the day before, felt great and had fun. nice.

| orienteering race 1:16:20 [4] 7.52 km (10:09 / km) +160m 9:10 / km | ||
| I'm adding this race from work, and I didn't bring my maps with me or anything, just seems like CSU will have more training hours if I post the stuff that I do on weekends sometimes :)
I pre-ran this race, which meant that Brendan and I (and Lori) got to the race site super-early on Satuday. We hopped a ride with the Olafsens and Loki tried to get me excited about racing by jumping all over me. He needn't have worried, I was already psyched up, and I felt great. I very quickly realized that the woods were not going to be great running; I felt like I was working incredibly hard and pushing through green woods the entire way to the first control. I also was off my line by the time I approached the circle, and luckily I was aware enough that I could read the features and relocate without much hesitation. slightly frustrated I redoubled my efforts and again felt like I was just throwing myself at a wall of green. And again, I wasn't keeping to my bearings at all. On the fourth control I decided to go straight because I was skeptical that the white woods were really going to be white, and I wasn't going to add distance.... I ended up way right on my line, and ended up finding myself on the indistinct trail behind the control. Yikes. felt like I was pulling things back together, and actually running okay through the woods until control #10. I was checking things off just fine, and I think I just shut my brain off at a crucial juncture, and when I came out to a bit of rocky ground it looked a lot like a cliff to me. I then spent what appears to be 5 minutes trying to figure out where this cliff fit into things. I wandered quite a lot, and was pretty wimpy about trying to relocate ( should have run up the hill when I knew I was lost and started over again), things finally fit and I found the control but saw Brendan making his way to it at the same time. I blasted out to the next one ( thinking how hard it was going to be to shake Brendan now that he was with me) and had no issues on 11. Took the road to 12, but still messed up in the woods near the bag so that Brendan was back on my tail again coming out of there. ran as hard as I could out to the road on the way to 13, and was way right of my line again, and ended up with a much harder attack on the control than I would have liked ( and Brendan was just coolly going straight to all these so he was keeping pace quite easily). ran through the swamp with Brendan to 14 ( cursing quite a lot at how hard the running was) and finally got away on the way to 15, spiking 15, 16, and running hard on the way in. legs felt perfectly fine ( rolled my ankle a little though) and felt like I had pushed hard but not run a smart enough race.

| road run 46:45 [3] 6.0 mi (7:46 / mi) | ||
| super light backpack, but felt very blah running. I think that I'm basically just bored with this route, and especially bored with all the stop lights that I have to wait for. I raced a guy up the hill in front of BC, he beat me but it still gave me a little energy to finish the run off with.
was daydreaming about getting CSU orienteering socks made and possible designs for a CSU tiomila tshirt.

| track 12:00 [3] 2.0 mi (6:00 / mi) | ||
| CSU training. Beginning of the new era CSU trainings, meaning that we aren't trying to make it into the woods while it's still light out anymore. Brendan planned for us to meet at the MIT track at 7, which meant that I could get there on time.
we ran 800s at 3 minute pace, with a 400 jog of rest. I felt incredibly good for these, suspect that i should perhaps have been running a slightly faster interval... but was more fun to run with Brendan anyways. I was feeling very sleepy before running today, and then after running woke up a lot. nice when that happens :)

| road run 46:42 [3] 6.0 mi (7:46 / mi) | ||
| running home after work. Way way too much in my backpack tonight. I gave a presentation so I had nice clothes ( nice clothes just seem to weigh more) and lots of stuff from CVS in the pack. I felt very heavy and slow, but it must have been all mental because I ran about the same speed. My legs hurt a bit more tonight, but that might be a cumulative effect of the weekend (racing at 110% is pretty sweet actually) and the past couple days on the roads.
after the run I had to rush to get ready for my girlfriend's secret-sister's secret birthday dinner at an undisclosed location. I got anchovies on my Bertucci's Caesar salad. mmmm.

| road run 46:53 [3] 6.0 mi (7:48 / mi) | ||
| Running 'to' work! that's how motivating a good weekend of orienteering can be. plus i was planning on having a social engagement in the evening, it fell through so I could have had time to run in the evening. I almost ran both ways, but then I chickened out, and decided to take the train home. The subway was totally sucking tonight though, so maybe it was a sign that I should run more instead :)
feels good to run in the morning, but about 1pm, I started to get sleepy. not saying it was the run, but it probably didn't help.

| road run 20:00 [3] 2.5 mi (7:59 / mi) | ||
| not really sure of the time or the distance. just know that it shouldn't take 45 minutes to take the T from Longwood to Davis Sq. I then ran from Davis up to Pine Banks where Alexei had set up CSU training, arrived a bit late. | ||
| orienteering 24:00 [3] | ||
| I forget how long the course was. back logging can be tough when your room is a unmitigated trash heap, I know the map is probably around here somewhere.... but I have already spent too long on AP as it is, and I haven't even gotten to logging the weekend or today. Cristina's log takes precedence, what can I say :)
anyways, I remembered enough about pine banks to bring long pants and to stay on the trails a much as possible. overshot the first control a little, and then undershot the third. very direct to 4, and very quick on the 5th, got a bit stuck getting out to six, didn't see the pit in the circle at 6, but stayed focused enough that relocating off the stone wall was pretty quick. stayed on the trail too long at 7, and had to loop back too much in the woods and then ran hard on the trail to 8 and the finish.

| road run 46:57 [3] 6.0 mi (7:49 / mi) | ||
| running home from work. At first felt great, then at around cleveland circle started to feel tired and a little sluggish until Newton. The last section picked up nicely though. Passed the wild turkey on beacon street again, he must live around there, since I saw him in the same spot a couple months ago.
just got back from pub trivia, our house came in second place getting almost all the questions right, but not recognizing enough bands for one of the lightning rounds. we also had a hard time telling which of the celebrities were Canadian, Gay, Both or Neither for the other lightning round. anyways, we had a blast.

| track 20:00 [5] 1.5 mi (13:19 / mi) | ||
| track work with Jenn, apparently Tuesday is her track day. we ran over to the track (~10 mins) and made up a workout on whim. The idea was to do a 600 cut-up (41 -- 43 -- 45 ) or so straight into 2 minutes "cruise" and then back to the track for a 600 cut down (45 -- 43 -- 41) or so. This is a kinda fun piece, that Jenn remembers from Williams Track. Our pacing wasn't great for either 600 we pretty much ran at about 42 seconds for each set. Then we decided to do 3 x 400 getting faster for each 400. couple minutes of rest between each. we ran 83, 73, 67. I was aiming for 80 on the first one, Jenn led the second, and then we tried to go sub 70 on the last one... which felt great. calves a little sore after this one.

| road run 35:11 [3] | ||
| Ran from work, down the riverway until the so called emerald necklace. I ran down to Jamaica Pond, did a loop and came back to the Joslin. Well I did get turned about once or twice whilst running, since it was my first time in this park. The whole thing was gorgeous, really very nice paths. I also got to speed past a high school or maybe college cross country team. It's nice to feel fast. Also nice to not to have to run with a back pack.
Then went to Lauren's to watch the Movie Hot Fuzz. A very very funny movie, that I highly suggest.

| road run 1:15:44 [3] | ||
| Sam and I went for a sunday stroll. Maybe the last sunday run that doesn't require wearing tights. It's getting cold out. Perhaps I'm getting weak. Anyways, running with sam was a nice end to the weekend, even if we had to skip orienteering to hang out with Sean and Arianne.

| orienteering 1:09:04 [3] 6 km (11:31 / km) | ||
| CSU training. Set by Pia. A really fun course. Looking back on the orienteering, I can see that I was running hard ( because it was fun) and I was trying to go race pace. I have several bad habits for short legs. Brendan was getting me to think about the routine that I use for short legs. I don't have a great one, mostly it involves knowing which way to exit the control circle and having a pretty good rough compass technique. I added some pace counting to my routine today ( I'm just starting to learn how to do this successfully) and was having a great time just running hard. So the real problems became apparent when I was running on a bearing and not even registering what sort of terrain I was passing. It started to get pretty dark, and the map was a photo copy to begin with so things were pretty faint and that made map reading difficult. I think my natural response to difficult orienteering is to just gloss over the hard stuff and hope for the best. I would just run without a plan. Not a successful way to orienteer, for all you readers at home.
Also made a series of mistakes when Brendan caught up with me in the forest, including a few minutes of unneeded crazy running on a long leg over the hill. so, lot's to improve on. But most importantly for me, I was still having fun. Can't wait for this weekend at the camping weekend. Thanks to Pia for organizing and hanging streamers.

| running home from work. felt great. well except for the sunburned shoulders. Am getting a little faster, but maybe that's rested legs and a light backpack.
am so far behind in reading my favorite logs!!
Monday Sep 3 | ||
| Note | ||
| Saturday- Monday consisted of lots of fun, but nothing loggable except for some waterskiing, some swimming, lot's of playing sardines, cross country croquet, ping pong, and a really fun game of capture the flag.
for capture the flag our team had most of the fast boys on it, and sam was the only fast one on the other team. we still had a lot of running and swimming to avoid getting caught and to try to find where they had hidden the flag. Sam also chased me willy-nilly through her side of the island for a very close escape on my part.
