Note
Back from Tio-Mila. What a super fun trip! I miss hanging out with the team already. It seems sad that there will be no one to cheer into the finish tonight. I'm very proud of all the runners. Boris especially, for choosing to run with CSU (thus sacrificing a run with a Linne team) and for doing so well in the long night even without a pack to work with. Props also to Brendan whose first swedish orienteering experience was a crazy relay in the dark and who handled the pressure admirably well. Also a great race effort by Will, a blazing time. Inadvertently skipping a control will certainly not erase our great experiences and may just be the incentive needed to get our team to come run again some time soon...

Also Bubo is a super coach. He stayed up all night, just for us :) and almost all Sunday night too. A real trooper.

orienteering race 41:04 [5] 6.4 km (6:25 / km)
CSU Relay - 4 point team. A really excellent course, certainly was an ideal way to end a gorgeous weekend. The location and the field controls made for a truly memorable and enjoyable experience. Lots of stress to perform well in front of (adoring fans) spectators made for an extra challenge and a good training for bigger races ( I know what you're thinking, what could be bigger than US relay champs? )

The race started with what I heard someone describe as "kicking over an ant hill" as the first leg runners poured out of the chute and up the hillside to numerous different controls with some young legs leading the way and a cadet succeeding in grabbing the dollar off the dummy. Brendan had sagely provided us with a megaphone and CSU did our very best to put it to good use, lots of heckling some scattered sporadic encouragements ( mostly to our own orange and blue).

We waited eagerly as some speedy 8 point teams rocked the first leg, and the junior relays were concluded with flair and style. Some of the junior juniors pulled double-shifts and came back for more in the Sr Sr relay. The first four point teams came back through the field ( Wil Smith chasing down Lazlo) with a couple more canadians ( the incredible Kempster) and Wyatt not far behind. and we cheered loudly ( the megaphone helped) when Brendan and Jon Campbell ( much loved former CSU member) appeared.

Brendan's start put Alex Jospe in a good position racing in her home park. With various foreign entities in front of us we were focusing primarily on DVOA and USMAOC black and Alex did a great job, passing Tori Campbell ( much loved former CSU member) and making up a few seconds on the DVOA team. She tagged off to Peter and we watched the old goat head out after a very hairy goat ( Greg Balter) with a lonestar goat right behind ( Michael Norris). Balter charged ahead with a very speedy time and Michael zipped past PG in the final loop, and I tagged off about 1:35 ( by my watch) behind Jordan Laughlin.

I was super nervous about needing to chase Jordan down. He had very nearly beaten me in the billygoat ( would have too, if he had skipped any controls) and there was a lot of field running and I didn't know how my fitness was going to match up in the open.

I got off to a quick start and then messed up the 2nd control, running to the wrong veg edge. embarrassed to have messed up in clear view of everyone and counting how much time I still needed to make up I ran up to the road crossing and charged up the hill to what I will refer to as "control number 4" sadly "control number 4" was really control number 14, and when I checked the code I experienced panic. and lot's of it. It took me a bunch of rational thought to figure out that I needed to unfold my map and run to the other control. Yikes, I wasn't thinking properly yet and ran headlong towards 5, which got me lots of extra up and down, but also got me a good look at contols 10, and 11. I settled down after 5, and had a very good race after that point. I did hesitate coming into 13, because I thought I was looking for a spur, and so was trying to run uphill to my control. But since I was running in the right direction I was okay.

I never saw Jordan out in the woods, but I heard his team cheering for him as I left the fields in the middle loop. knowing that I was ahead helped me relax, and ensured that I didn't make any goofs in the end section.

We finished 2nd US, third ( or 4th depending on what you count) overall. With DVOA capturing top honors. But props go out to Wil and Kata for running two legs each and winning overall. Almost as impressive as when Will Hawkins won by himself at beaverbrook :)

our 8 point team was also quite awesome. highlighted by a stellar run by Ian Smith, and also runs by Sara Mae Berman, Lori Huberman, and Ken Sr.

Tio Mila is the next venue for CSU relay awesomeness :)

road run 44:20 [3] 5.5 mi (8:04 / mi)
running. to the trader joe's to get foods, and then home. I felt quite apathetic about running, my legs feel great, so I don't blame the billygoat at all, but no motivation.

heavy bags make me sleepy :) how does one get excited about running at the end of the day?? I mean honestly. I guess the best thing would be to run in the morning before I can get all worn out. since I don't seem to wake up early enough for that, I'm gonna need some other ideas.

road run 44:43 [3] 6.0 mi (7:27 / mi)
Running on home. Was originally planning on doing a hurdle workout with Jenn at Newton South, but I was at work too late and Jenn wanted to go running in the warm sunshine. our plan is to do some steeplechase workouts and maybe even some steeplechase races. maybe I can finally get my time under 10 mins! I was so close my sophmore year in college.

Anyways, run home felt nice. very relaxed and I hit most of the lights right on, so that was good. I was thinking how I feel much faster without a pack on, and wondering if having a pack physically slows me down or mentally drags on me. having the energy to run hard is easier with other people... so I pretended to race people up the BC hill to keep me motivated :)

Saturday Apr 5

road run 35:59 [3] 5.5 mi (6:32 / mi)
Quick run because I ran out of time somehow. I started some beer bread baking so I only had about 40 minutes to run before I needed to be back to check on the goods. Timed it pretty well. gorgeous day out, just wish I hadn't eaten quite so much raisin bran quite so immediately before running.

Thursday Apr 3

track 30:00 [3] 2.25 mi (13:19 / mi)
track workout with the CSU crew. Tonight that consisted of Lori, Brendan and myself. Brendan and I ran 400-600-800-800-600-400, with 400 of rest between. our paces were ( if I remember correctly) 84, 2:13 , 3:03, 3:00, 2:19, 84. Brendan actually was keeping splits though I think.

After the cool down Lori had us do gymnastics torture session alias "core training" which involved various diabolical crunches and situp-y things.

Note
all work and no run makes ross a dull boy. stuck in the lab until 6:30, and then I took the T home, and Sam took me out to dinner. mmm food. I'm quite embarrassed because I didn't finish my whole meal. I'm slipping in my old age. There was a time that I could easily eat an entire basket of rolls, most of an appetizer and a whole plate of pasta.

overcome by curiosity I purchased Flight of the Conchords, hope it's as good as people ( some even on attackpoint) say

road run 47:09 [3] 6.0 mi (7:51 / mi)
Running home from work. oh so icky sticky humid. Today was a "should wear my contacts more often" kind of day. I felt very slow, except when I was racing a dude up the BC hill. my legs were a little bit tired, I had a hard time getting my turnover up. It was so nice to run in shorts and a shirt, though soon I will be switching over to short sleeves.

road run 47:55 [3] 6.0 mi (7:59 / mi)
I was not planning on running this morning, but then I was strangely awake-feeling this morning at , no joke, 7:15 ! yikes. So I had the time to do my crunches, make the bed, have breakfast and run to work by 9. Not too shabby. I didn't run that quickly though, mostly because my backpack felt sooo heavy. My legs felt great, my foot feels much better too. Wicked warm, sixties feel good.
