| No running. very nauseous. felt sick all night and didn't really sleep. induced a little vomiting in the morning and was rewarded with a little sleep in return. spent the rest of the day driving with Sam and some college friends up to the thousand islands for the weekend. | ||
Thursday Aug 30 | ||
| orienteering 30:00 [3] | ||
| spent all thursday feeling rushed and behind schedule. got UPS to print the maps for the CSU training at Franklin Park, way better than kinko's I'll add here, and then headed out to set up some steamers.
I hadn't vetted the control locations yet and quickly hung the first control I set in the wrong spot and couldn't find the cliff that I was trying to hang the next one on. plus wasn't feeling super healthy anyways. I got some of the early streamers out in the woods but then went to the start to pass out maps and see who showed up. as a side note, I'd love to learn how to plan better courses. It's not a skill that I think I have yet. A nice crowd and they were happy to sit and chat a little as I hung the end of the course. Sam baked and brought yummy brownies ( I had advertised cake in honor of Sam, Hilly and John) and most people looked like they had fun. John didn't make it in time for the training, but he and sophie came over for dinner and we proceeded to bore sophie to death by talking about orienteering constantly.

| road run 40:00 [3] 4.5 mi (8:52 / mi) | ||
| Yikes falling behind in the logging . This was a run with Jenn, the last run we're likely to do from Brookline since she's moving at the end of the month. felt exausted before the run, and a lot better afterwards. | ||
Tuesday Aug 28 | ||
| road run 28:00 [3] 3.6 mi (7:46 / mi) | ||
| Was going to run home but Sam suggested that I run over and meet her at the grocery store. A less than subtle maneuver to get me to pay for groceries, which I was happy to do. Sam had picked out recipes for the week, so all I did was trail behind her in the store and put my own whimsical choices into the cart. Of course we need pickled banana peppers, and chocolate flavored soy milk, and a few boxes of rice-a-roni and some condensed cream of mushroom soup.
run was nice. very sweaty, certainly time to cut the hair, although I will miss my lush peroxide locks. I can't help but check myself out in the windows that I pass as I run. "do I have good form?" "how does my stride look?" " are all these joggers that I'm passing thinking how hot I am?"
Monday Aug 27 | ||
| road run 46:30 [3] 6.0 mi (7:45 / mi) | ||
| running home after work. my right leg feels much better. hamstring's a little tight still but the knee feels great.the shoes are starting to work, and the 3 day mini-taper seems to be effective. felt good to be exercising, just wish I didn't sweat into my eyes so much.
Sam comes home tonight! yay
| Note | ||
| have had this youtube video stuck in my head all weekend.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tx1XIm6q4r4&NR=1 it's pretty awesome
Sunday Aug 26 | ||
| Note | ||
| no running. Went to bed at four and got up at like 10 to have breakfast. Sean and I made an attempt at playing Kubb, but the lazy sunday feel of the day made it a pretty lackluster showing. Or maybe I'm just bitter that I lost both games. driving home was pretty dull too. Highlight was probably listening to Wait Wait don't Tell Me on NPR. | ||

| The Great NY State Fair!
the main event planned for the weekend. Wandered around in the blazing heat (~91) with Sean and his parents and Arianne. literally the first thing I did when I got inside was walk over to a booth and buy fried dough :) My goal was to always have something fried in my hand to be eating. The next stop on the tour was the dairy building to see the butter sculpture and to drink cheap milk. I had about 6 cups so I was starting to feel pretty good about life. Next curly fries were consumed, and then some sour apple licorice. It was getting to be about lunch time so I had some BBQ ribs and some fresh made potato chips. back to the milk bar to have a drinking contest with Sean. Just who could drink the fastest. No contest really, because I'm really good at drinking milk. All throughout the day we wandered past booths and checked out all the rabbits and chickens and cows and went up in the ferris wheel and toured some old railroad cars and perhaps most importantly saw Big Norm , a 1600 lb pig who was 8 feet long and gihugic. I'm not sure what to say about a pig that tips the scales at almost 12 G. He has a website though http://www.worldsbigpig.com/p-2.html We collapsed on the grass to watch some cool five nations native american dances and almost feel asleep. This was a sign that six hours of walking around had made us tired, so we decided to say goodbye to the fair. a note: NY has a state muffin- the Apple Muffin adopted in 1987 After the fair we went to a drive in movie!! whoo hoo. my first time, and it was amazing. Jackie Chan was good. Rush Hour 3 was all I could have expected and my intense loyalty to Jackie means that I will go and see rush hour 4 just as soon as it comes out :)

Friday Aug 24 | ||
| Note | ||
| no running. resting the leg and looking forward to a nice weekend in Rochester. 6 hours of driving is pretty dull. Not getting to the library in time to pick up some books on CD was a poor reality to face. Very nice to finally get out of the car though. Listened to a classical guitar CD on repeat for most of Massachusetts. not bad. | ||
Thursday Aug 23 | ||
| road run 39:00 [3] | ||
| running from work to Bed Bath and Beyond to pick up an anniversary present for samantha. but shhhh it's a secret. then from bb&b to fresh pond where I was about 80 minutes late for the CSU training. I got to say hi to everyone who showed up, get a map, and pick up streamers. I tried out a phrase in lithuanian on Alma, the lithuania who is in boston for a bit, it was close enough that she understood what I was trying to say "Du Labai Grazi" .
| ||
| Trail run 35:00 [3] | ||
| orienteering around fresh pond is more like a trail run than orienteering. I had lots of issues though, didn't go very straight at all. Was enjoying the feel of running without a backpack though. was nigh impossible to find the last two streamers in the dark. Up on vague trails. had to go to the middle of the circle and sorta feel around for something plastic-y. A tendon on the back of my right knee feels a bit weird... I assume too much running with a backpack after not enough base training. doesn't feel super serious, just annoying.
Alexi set 12 streamers and after each control or pair of controls you had to come back to the start triangle :) would have been great to do in different forkings with other runners :)
| road run 22:00 [3] | ||
| running from fresh pond to davis square after training. I really wanted a milk shake, but a swarm of tufts frosh got in line right before I got there, so I went to the store 24 and got a half gallon of cookie dough and a bag of cape cod jalapeno and cheddar chips :) mmm. I ate ice cream as I walked over to Gavin's house, with chips as course two in my evening meal. | ||

Wednesday Aug 22 | ||
| road run 25:00 [3] 3.5 mi (7:08 / mi) | ||
| running over to Jenn's for game night. keep meaning to run to work, but not getting up when I should. new shoes feel awesome :)
game night is officially ( well by dan and me) called dinner night now, on account that some of the people at game night don't ever seem to want to learn the rules of whatever game we are playing. got through about 8 round of Oh Hell , all the while Stephanie was just playing random cards out of her hand. We gave up after that ( "do you have any clubs? because you need to play a club if you have one" get's old). maybe a new game night is needed, one where we can play games with more depth than Uno.
Tuesday Aug 21 | ||
| road run 50:15 [3] 6.0 mi (8:22 / mi) | ||
| Ahh, not so awake this morning either. felt leaden and finally rolled out at about 8:15 again. Out the door to the T at 8:35. muscles were again very vocal about all the running around they are expected to do, but I sat on the floor of the lab stretching out while reading about cell-cycle machinery, and that seemed to help a little bit. I was feeling okay when I hit the streets on my way home. I still felt really slow, but it was just as fast a time as the last couple of days.
After a shower I went out to buy some shoes. I've been running in a pair of nikes that James Scarborough donated to me at the end of WOC last year. so a year of running on secondhand shoes made me think that it was time to invest.... especially if I am going to be doing so much running on concrete and asphalt. I ended up getting the Asics 2060s well whatever they've turned into now 2120s or something. I almost got the equivalent pair of mizunos, because they looked cool.... but then thought that I would play it safe and stick with the shoes that I know my feet like. then it was over to the grocery store for my favorite hobby. Shopping while hungry!! best purchase was four tins of anchovies ( on sale) that make an excellent recovery snack. mmmm fish flavored salt.

| road run 50:30 [3] 6.0 mi (8:25 / mi) | ||
| running home from work. I really prefer running in the morning when I'm fresh. But I was sleepy enough that I slept through the alarm that I set for 3am that would have gotten me up to listen to the middle qualis and I also slept past my internal clock which usually gets me out of bed by at least 8ish. It was closer to 8:15 when I rolled out of bed. So getting to work on time ( a very laughable concept really in lab science) required taking the T. But I ran home, and it was nice to erase the tedium of work with a nice run. Thinking that tomorrow I might bookend the day, and run to and from work! of course my legs are complaining, because I basically started running 5 times as much as normal and I didn't even give them fair warning that it was coming. Fulminant exercise !
really want to be competitive by the sprint series finals and relay champs though... so I gotta get the mileage in somehow :)

Saturday Aug 18 | ||
| road run 1:27:00 [3] 10.0 mi (8:41 / mi) | ||
| Certainly an interesting run for me. I started the day after many hours of playing on the internet, trying to stay in touch with the racing going on in Kiev. Then hopped a ride with Jenn and her roomate to Good Harbor Beach in Rockport. The skies were a bit overcast at 2pm when we left, but the day was gorgeous when we got to the shore. Perfect for sitting by the dunes and playing Raj, and then Bacci Ball. lot's of time to sit and enjoy a class of surfers wiping out on the waves and a couple of dudes with metal detectors looking for dimes. It must take years for those things to pay for themselves. We convinced Jenn to do no-handed cartwheels on the sand, and that's my new ambition for a good talent to learn. we headed home and I went into fenway to do the Tomb adventure show with a couple of college friends.
Tomb was really fun but only if you were able to keep a good mindset. It's a guided egypt themed puzzle challenge. Lot's of different kinds of puzzles are used and some fun special effects. We had a group of young kids with us, and the youngest ones started crying when they filled the chamber with dry ice and snake sounds. So they had to leave. We also had to complete a 4 piece version of Hanoi's Tower with a time limit. The time limit was the ceiling slowly sinking toward the floor trying to crush us. Apparently if you don't solve the puzzle in time, you really do "die" and get escorted out the "death tunnel" which would be sad because you would miss out on some of the other puzzles later on. Anyways, after the show we headed up to sommerville to play some games at their appartment. The game we chose was called Robo Rally and was really fun, but took awhile to finish (2 am). Since Boston is so bad about the T, I decided to run home. I still had a lot of my beach stuff with me in my backpack so I ran with bacci balls bouncing in the small of my back the whole time. It's really quite nice to run at night here, because it's cool, but everything is so well lit. I did a bit of a memory-o, which is why the run lasted so long, I took the long way around a lot when I was on the North Side of the river. still, It was good to get a run in, and convenient that it also got me home tonight. I think I'm going to give up now ( 5 am) on trying to get my computer to give me WOC results from the long quali, and go to bed. Go USA!!

Friday Aug 17 | ||
| road run 51:50 [3] 6.0 mi (8:38 / mi) | ||
| Oh snap! look at me and my second day of running to work. I think running with a pack is good rogaine training, and that's about it. My shoulders are sore from yesterday's jaunt w/ pack, but it will probably pass if I keep up the running routine. Certainly 6 miles of running per day is way better orienteering training than 12 miles of biking.
on a side note, I'm glad that Sam left her iPod shuffle when she headed to Kiev. It took me all of a week to dump all of her contents and repopulate the thing with different music. I'll have to be nice to her and hope she doesn't notice when she gets back, otherwise I'm in big trouble :)
Thursday Aug 16 | ||
| road run 50:50 [3] 6.0 mi (8:28 / mi) | ||
| Bike is good and truly busted.... well it's sub-functional. Rear spokes are super loose, and the rim is not maintaining shape any longer. So I motivated and ran to work instead. I think I should get some sort of reward for not taking the easy way out and going by T. Actually I did go see Bourne after work which sorta counts as a reward. I kinda want to buy a moped and practice driving around urban centers now :)
the run was nice, listening to music though, so I guess it only counts as a jog. The sweating was a bit out of control, but I was saved by a cold shower at work. apart from having to leave the house earlier, this is an okay way to get to work.
Wednesday Aug 15 | ||
| road run 57:30 [3] 6.5 mi (8:51 / mi) | ||
| Pre Game night run. Jenn and I were feeling pretty excited about running, and so we did the "commonwealth Ave loop". The rule is that when we run from brookline Jenn is in charge of where we go, and when we run from Newton I'm in charge. The commonweath ave part of the loop was awesome, very nice to run down the middle on the grass chatting about stuff. Jenn has this habit of running back along Rt. 9 though which is a gross road, and it would be well worth it to add on more miles to avoid this section of the loop.
It looked like just the two of us for game night when we got back... but then Michelle came home and Dan showed up. The perfect number for take-out thai and Rummikube! Finally got a chance to get the udon n curry dish at coconut cafe. Amazing, everything I thought it could be. mmmm. now I want more. oh, plus I won at rummikube!
| biking 1:10:00 [3] 13.0 mi (5:23 / mi) | ||
| biking to work and then to Jenn's and then home. back wheel is freaking out, and I should put some time into bike maintenance soon. I'm not good at getting motivated to work on my bike or at knowing what to do. Pretty much I've got a can of WD-40 and that's the majority of my interference :)
On the way home I stopped to let a pure-bred possum cross my path. At least it looked pure-bred because it had messed up hips, just like a golden retriever. More likely that the poor guy had already been hit by a car and that was the reason for the "hip dysplasia".
Tuesday Aug 14 | ||
| biking 1:00:00 [3] 12.0 mi (4:59 / mi) | ||
| biking to and from work. since I'm logging this on Friday I can't remember anything special about what I did on Tuesday. I stopped off at the shaws on the way home because I really wanted a salad for dinner. I got bagged lettuce, grape tomatoes, an avocado, smoked mozzarella, cottage cheese with chives, and chicken to cook and toss on top. mmm garnish with sunflower seeds and banana peppers.
now I want thai food and banana peppers. I need to take a break from back logging and go feed myself.
Monday Aug 13 | ||
| biking 1:00:00 [3] 12.0 mi (4:59 / mi) | ||
| biking to and from work. good times. sometimes I wonder how much faster I could go if I were on a nice road bike instead of a mediocre mountain bike.
trader joe's on the way home to find food to feed myself. cooking for one is way harder than cooking for two. Come home Sam, right now I'm cooking for two and then eating for us both. I ended up settling on buying some sausage and grape tomatoes, alfredo sauce and sliced mushrooms. I arrived at this solution by walking around the store and buying things that I wanted to eat. Figured that I could put them all together in a serviceable way when I made it home.
Sunday Aug 12 | ||
| biking 40:00 [3] 9.5 mi (4:12 / mi) | ||
| Not really sure how long I spent biking around. I hit up a couple of hardware stores on my quest for a replacement sliding drawer bracket. We have a bathroom cabinet drawer that has been broken for a couple of weeks, and I figured that it would be an easy fix. turns out not to have been as straight forward as I would have liked, but Harvey's Hardware in Needham Center has pretty much anything you could want, including these plastic bits. The drawer is now "fixed". Mission accomplished. | ||
Tuesday Aug 7 | ||
| biking 1:00:00 [3] 12.0 mi (4:59 / mi) | ||
| to work and home. I really hate the intersection of beacon and harvard, so I went around on the way home. The short-cut turns out to be slower I think, but I do avoid waiting at the lights on beacon street for ever.... maybe it's worth it.
Sam made dinner tonight, so I got to loaf around and play video games :) Sam's summer vacation is great!
Monday Aug 6 | ||
| biking 1:00:00 [3] 12.0 mi (4:59 / mi) | ||
| to work and home. I sweat so much that I use a different t shirt everyday. I also don't do laundry with much frequency, so I am getting to see each of my t shirts again, not just the ones that live on top of the drawer. | ||
Sunday Aug 5 | ||
| Trail run 1:26:00 [3] | ||
| A long trail run with Sam. She is so fast, I just couldn't keep up with her. She had to carry me around most of the way, but that's ok, because she is super strong. She did make me run the last bit, but then she tried to drive out of Hale without me. After chasing the car for 4 minutes, she finally took pity on me and came back to get me. Isn't she nice? All in all, a great run. | ||
| Note | ||
| I'd like to point out that Sam is a punk, and she took it upon herself to post this run. Most of it is true except for the driving off without me part. can't even get up off the couch to get ice cream without logging out of attackpoint.
Was really fun to work on the threshold segments, cruising down some very narrow overgrown singletrack, and it made me feel so fast!
Friday Aug 3 | ||
| biking 1:00:00 [3] 12.0 mi (4:59 / mi) | ||
| biking to and from work. Not much more to add here, except that I stopped at Trader Joe's to buy food for dinner, and wanted to buy the whole store. | ||
Thursday Aug 2 | ||
| biking 1:00:00 [3] 12.0 mi (4:59 / mi) | ||
| Biking to and from work. A really gorgeous morning. I had an excellent AOWHN moment as I biked past a man illegally parked in front of a fire hydrant. The fun part was that the guy was trying to be nonchalant as he stood directly in front of the hydrant and hoped that no one would notice. :)
| ||
| C • Wow, you're posting. I just s... 1 | ||
| pool 35:00 [3] 0.9 mi (38:53 / mi) | ||
| swimming at Walden Pond with Jenn. We parked at the highschool and jogged the .8 miles over to the pond. Then we did a lap and back of the length of the pond. Jenn swims straighter and faster than I do, but is a little compulsive about fixing her goggles, which gives me time to catch up with her :)
I think I've been convinced that it would be fun to do a triathlon with her at the end of August in Chicopee. It's a shortish one, with a half mile swim, 30 miles of biking and 3 miles of running ( I think, don't quote me). still seems like it could be a good experience.
Wednesday Aug 1 | ||
| biking 1:00:00 [3] 12.0 mi (4:59 / mi) | ||
| the running half of game night was canceled so I just biked to and from work. squeaky bike partly from the chain needing to be greased and partly from the spokes ( or so I believe) being a bit loose on the back wheel.
we tried to play save dr. lucky at game night, but some people weren't interested in games with rules.... so we played taboo instead.
