orienteering 1:14:34 [3] 8.2 km (9:06 / km)

Orienteering in Hollis NH. Weather was really beautiful, legs felt great. My orienteeering itself wasn't spectacular. I was struggling with a lot of my navigation. Some really silly mistakes. I even left the start triangle running the wrong direction!

It can be really tough to approach a local meet with the same intensity as an A-meet. I'd like to think that I usually pull it off better than this :)

The positives from the day were the fresh feeling legs... a hard week but I'm keeping up physically. Also I wasn't letting the poor orienteering affect my mood. I stayed pretty cheerful throughout.

The negatives were that I was unable to finally get into the race. I had lots of opportunities to put the mistakes behind me and have a clean race but I was very sloppy right to the end.

Road run 1:55:00 [3] 12.5 mi (9:12 / mi)

A really nice day to go running. Shorts and t-shirt weather really and nice to just follow along on Sam's route. Pretty sore at the beginning from this past week, but loosened up a lot by the end. When we were down in the Arboretum Sam and I split and I raced up and over Peter's Hill and she went around... we were about the same time :)

Road run 32:00 [3] 4.0 mi (8:00 / mi)

running to work in the deluge. I stopped partway there to put my cellphone in a plastic bag. Didn't want it to drown like the last one :)

Today turned into a bit of a rest day. Concerned about ramping up the mileage too quickly.

into work.

Road run 1:05:18 [3] 7.1 mi (9:12 / mi)

Today was a perfect day for an evening hill workout, which is to say that Sam had a meeting tonight anyway so there wasn't much reason to rush home.

I got out the door at about 6pm (my labmates required me to wear a safety vest because of the dark) and ran over to the base of summit ave. The plan was to run 8 reps with ~ a minute of jogging rest along the top and then ~3 minutes of jogging rest down the hill again.

I'm out of practice and think these times are slower more because of a mental/technical aspect of hill running. I feel quite strong, and it irks me but I'm pretty sure that I could have run faster if I had some more motivation of some sort. It felt like 100% effort at the time, but I know that I'm stronger than this effort indicates. HR was getting up there 191. but I took off the strap when it became too constricting.

I had a bunch of teens cheering me on every lap at the bottom for the first half. It was kinda fun to have someone yell "you're a beast" as I headed up.

home after the hills. I've decided the sore muscles aren't from changing shoes but rather from a poorly balanced backpack. I felt great running for the hills, but throwing on the bag tightened some stuff in the gluts and the hamstrings. Nothing serious, but annoying.

orienteering 25:36 [3] 4.1 km (6:15 / km)

woke up early to get out in the woods in the daylight. I meant to pick up a map of a course Brendan had streamered but instead got a different map that Brendan had set ( I think a night-o). Jogged over to Hammond pond (so nice to be so close) and then set off at just below race pace. Was beautiful to be outside and orienteering well.

Now off to work.

Road run 32:00 [3] 4.0 mi (8:00 / mi)

running to work. wearing my asics again. I like the GoLite Versas that I was wearing most of last week, but I think I prefer the 2130s for this road running.

Road run 32:00 [3] 4.0 mi (8:00 / mi)

Running home. outside of my hamstrings, especially my right side, seemed a little tight at the beginning. I used the time at red lights to stretch a bit. Nothing serious, but I wonder if it can be attributed to switching shoes. more likely attributable to 11 miles the night before :)

Road run 32:00 [3] 4.0 mi (8:00 / mi)

commuting to work. sleepy ross.

Road run 1:31:00 [3] 11.2 mi (8:07 / mi)

Needed to do a long run, and I knew that I should do one, but I just felt tired and hungry. Really glad that I pushed myself to do this. I left from work so I had my backpack too. The run seemed to drag on a lot, but I decided to go visit some of my old running haunts, and I did a lap of crystal lake over in Newton Highlands. I also stopped by a staples and picked up some more thermal paper for the SportIdent Printer.

Sam had made dinner, so I could get home, eat, and go to bed early.

biking 47:00 [3] 9.0 mi (5:13 / mi)

Biking to work, from work over to Clem's place near the Science Museum and then partway home... just partway. Flat tire in East Cambridge, and I didn't have my patch kit in my bike. So I stopped, got some ice cream from Toscanini's (mmm coconut, and gingersnap molasses chew) and walked my bike to the subway. I took the red line to Park and then snuck my bike on the D line home. [comments about flatting too much and not riding this bike as a commuter bike are welcome, but will be largely ignored :) ]

Road run 43:47 [3] 5.8 mi (7:33 / mi)

A really awesome CSU training, set by Clem. Brendan, Clem, Lori, Presto, Ross in attendance (In alphabetical order). Clem used a street map that Brendan has created for most of the Boston area and google aerial photos to put together a street-o of Charlestown. He hadn't been to the places but he'd done an amazing amount of virtual vetting of the course and all the locations were stunning. Especially running up the hill to the bunker hill monument, which was all lit up and pretty.

I was trying to run at threshold pace for this. We had done a bit of warm-up to go find Lori and to get to the start triangle and so I started off at a pretty good pace, I was aiming for 160-170 HR but I somehow managed to hit a button pretty early on that switched my screens and didn't know how to turn it back. So I went by feel instead. Was with Brendan trading back and forth a lot for the race. Missed the prettiest part of the course when I didn't realize that I was supposed to go out along the waterfront on the boardwalk.
