orienteering 47:10 [5] 6.1 km (7:44 / km)

Third time out at the CSU semi-permanent course. Sam, Jeff and I met Lori and Presto at South Border road. We were all a little worried about how cold it was, but once I was out there running hard it felt quite nice.

I used the contours only map this time again, but really I wasn't doing much map reading at all. It was a little too easy for me to remember where the flags were and so I was a bit casual with my orienteering. I tried to focus, but was having more fun with the pushing hard with the running in the woods. Very icy today, fell a couple of times once right at the start that actually left a good sized scrape.

Messed up 13 pretty good. Thought that I was swinging farther south than I actually did, so I ended up overshooting a whole lot. I'd been in the area a lot though, so it was relatively easy for me to relocate. Got to 17, but the streamer had disappeared, and then swung too far around on the way back to the finish in an attempt to avoid all the green briar.

Got back to the car and Brendan was biking up to do a loop of the skyline trail. We chatted a bit, then he set out and I went to go re-hang control 17.... then I wandered back a few more controls to see if I could see Sam come through. I got too cold waiting above 14 and didn't know if she'd already run past or not... so I came back to the car to wait it out.

Finally adding my splits from the last few times.

Road run 32:00 [2] 4.0 mi (8:00 / mi)

Bitterly cold and a little slick. The cold made me rethink my plan of running to and from work.... just surviving the run to work was enough for me.

Road run 32:00 [2] 4.0 mi (8:00 / mi)

Running to work. Windy and chilly, but the recent heat wave has melted the un-shoveled walk.

Road run 32:00 [2] 4.0 mi (8:00 / mi)

running home. Ian and I were planning on setting some night-o at Prospect Hill but the wintry conditions were enough to scare us off. I thought about using the evening to do a hill workout (missed my Monday Hills) but by the time I got out of work I was more interested in just going home. There was quite a bit of snow falling for the first half of my return run. A strong wind was blowing the flakes directly into my face and there was no amount of squinting that allowed for seeing the sidewalk in front of me without mildly painful snow landing in my eyes.

I also got to help a real live honest to goodness old woman cross the street. I thought that kind of thing was just for stories :)

Note

I'm going to be a healthy volunteer in a research study and today I had a screening doctor's appointment. Most of the screening was very basic, health history, weight height etc. But they did do some cool stuff and they are running about $1,000 worth of blood labs which I'm fascinated to see the results from.

I learned today that my resting heart rate is 39. I'm also got a scan from my EKG as well, though I don't know very much about how to interpret the peaks. The doctor in charge of the study is very friendly and I will be spending a lot of time chatting with him over the course of the study as there will be 3 overnight stays at the hospital before it's done.

Road run 32:00 [2] 4.0 mi (8:00 / mi)

running home. Super warm, feels good to run, but can definitely tell that I wasn't 100% the past couple days.

Note

Woke up at 4am feeling like the worst had past. Good enough to go to work, but not good enough to do any exercise.

woof, started out okay. control picking set by Boris on the Blue Hills west. Sam and I headed over in the morning and things went well for awhile. Started to feel worse and worse and by the end I was suffering from a lot of GI and gastric distress.

spent the rest of the day and night very nauseous

Sad to miss Alex's ski-o at Weston.
