Note

My best friend's daughter had a birthday party. Baby Finley is now 1 year old. She also now owns almost everything ever made with a sesame street character theme. Most of the day consisted of sitting around watching Finley fling frosting, which is pretty adorable when it's not your carpet. For the driving this weekend Sam got a book on CD "Howl's Moving Castle" which was very good, and now we've added the DVD to our netflix queue.

Skiing 2:27:15 [2] 9.09 mi (16:12 / mi)

Sam and I were heading to Albany for a birthday party on Sunday, so Jeff and Judy agreed to drive out to Canterbury Farms ski area on Rt. 8 in Western MA. Sam and I were intending to skate, but the snow was pretty slow and the trails were a little narrow and bumpy for our abilities. So instead Jeff brought out the wax kit and we switched over to classic skiing. A technique I know very little about :) It was really beautiful out in the woods.

Road run 28:12 [2] 2.23 mi (12:39 / mi)

still feeling a bit sick at the back of my throat in the morning, so took the shuttle to work. I ran home, stopping at the dry cleaners to gather clothes.

made dinner and watched Up with the roommates. Pretty sad way for a movie to start. But the talking dogs made up for this sadness in my mind.

Road run 31:41 [2] 4.22 mi (7:31 / mi)

Woke up with a bit of a sick feeling in my throat and meant to take a rest day, but then it seemed like it would be more fun to run to work instead of taking the shuttle. Glad that the weather was cooperating. After about 20 minutes of being awake my throat felt fine.... hope it was a false alarm.

Work was also fun, I got to learn how to use an incredibly expensive piece of machinery.... always a plus :)

Road run 32:32 [2] 4.18 mi (7:47 / mi)

Absolutely gross and wet outside. cold driving rain. blah.
12 PM

Road run 10:03 [2] 1.1 mi (9:08 / mi)
ahr:159 max:186

Told myself that I would go do the track at lunch. Asked Boris to design me a workout, and was feeling pretty motivated to work hard. Weather was still gross, and putting wet cold running things on shows some real dedication :)

Running down to my favorite track. I'm not sure that the weather has ever been nice when I've gone running here though.

Road run 22:16 intensity: (8:28 @2) + (13:48 @5) 3.12 mi (7:08 / mi)

A decreasing ladder workout
1600 (2 mins rest)
1200 (2 mins rest)
800 (2 mins rest)
400 (1 min rest)
200

attempting paces that Boris chose based off a 16 minute 5k time. (5:16, 3:50, 2:35, 1:12, 0:30). This was hard for me, weather was miserable, chest strap on the HRM was tight enough that I eventually took it off after the 1200 and the cold meant that my muscles were tight and my shoulders high. That being said, it's always disappointing when you miss your goal times, even if there are reasons that you don't go as fast as planned. I wasn't that far off, not entirely sure why the 1200 was such a plod, but everything else seemed okay, some work to do though. Looking forward to warmth and summer....

My times (5:19, 4:03, 2:40, 1:14, 0:32)

Road run 10:43 [2] 1.31 mi (8:11 / mi)

Back to the lab... rain finally starts to let up a bit. Ducks were having a blast in the ponds along the emerald necklace :) at least someone was enjoying the day outside.

Road run 32:21 [2] 4.33 mi (7:28 / mi)

Running to work. slept a lot which is good, but was sluggish in the morning, and so I still wasn't out the door on time.
12 PM

Road run 42:07 [2] 5.51 mi (7:39 / mi)

Went running at lunch time, but had a small stitch to contend with. eventually it worked itself out, but wasn't running as smoothly as I had hoped. Still, it's really nice to get out and run in the middle of the day.
5 PM

Road run 31:17 [2] 3.98 mi (7:52 / mi)

running home before CSU training tonight. didn't feel particularly fast, so I was surprised that I was running faster than 8 min/mile.

orienteering 59:47 [4] 4.26 mi (14:02 / mi)

Tough window-o course set by Alex at Prospect Hill. The windows were small, leaving very little to relocate with. I was using a bearing and pace count approach mostly, and finding all sorts of nasty areas right along the line. Swamps and green briar thickets :) Also had some issues in places where I thought I knew the map well, and so was a little lax in trying to stay sharp on the line. Seemed pretty hilly out there, but after control 3, things settled down and I was mostly able to stay moving and in control.

I was going to do another loop and pick up the flags but one of my college friends was in town on a brief visit, so I went off to be social instead.

Map up on my DOMA page.

Road run 30:05 [3] 4.24 mi (7:06 / mi)

felt awesome this morning, so pushed a little harder than normal. great to start a day like that.

Road run 1:21:24 intensity: (1:01:24 @2) + (20:00 @5) 8.73 mi (9:19 / mi)

Hills today. Felt good, but not terribly fast.

and the run home. Legs were a little tired, but mostly feel just fine. I remember Marc saying that if you train a lot by running 40 minutes slowly you'll get really good at running 40 minutes slowly. It just means that this commute has become very routine for me now.
