Trail run 51:00 [3] 10.0 km (5:06 / km)

A lovely morning. I wasn't quite as successful at getting up and moving as Sam was, but I did manage to get a run in between PBS washes on a set of retinas. Headed out without much of a plan, wandered through stadsskogen, into Eriksberg and then looped into Hågadalen briefly before cutting back directly to the lab.

Brunch afterward was lovely, we even spent a portion of the conversation making a pitch to Thierry that he should start his training log on Attackpoint. Not sure how successful we were.

then an unsatisfying 90 minutes trying to get Sam's ANT stick from the Garmin 910XT working. Not sure which part in the process is failing. Tried two computers, multiple browsers, but in the end did something with Garmin Connect and exporting tcx files...

Lastly, we were invited on an adult playdate by a co-worker who wanted to introduce a couple that just moved to Uppsala to some other people that like to play board games (i.e. us). Martin and Sushma have an astonishing collection of games (I would hazard a guess at about 200) and were warm hosts, good cooks, and lovely company. We played 4 games and I hope it is the start of a good friendship!

Track (Intervals) 1:00:00 [5] 5.0 km (12:00 / km)

A very nice training session. Cat posted on trainingsbank to do track intervals this morning. I headed down from the lab and met up with Cat, Johan, and Viktor. We had Karna and her friend and Alex as a cheering squad.

We did 4x (900@5k pace, 45 sec rest, 300@mile pace, 90 sec rest). Well, more or less. Johan and I needed to cut the rest a bit to keep up with Cat and Viktor, but it was great fun. about 3:05 and 57, though I wasn't really timing things that much.

Perfect fall day!

Then back to the lab.

orienteering 1:33:50 [0] 9.86 km (9:31 / km) +15m 9:27 / km

Training bank training designed by Thierry. I had planned to hang out with Johan tonight, and obviously that should include night orienteering in the woods :) Lunsen, at 1:5000 scale.

I went out to set reflectors on Course A, but had difficulty with the scale and the terrain especially around control 2 and 3. I was extra cautious, knowing that everyone would rely on them being in the right place. In the end, I figured things out, but that did mean that Alex, Olle and Viktor had to do the course without reflectors on the last part.

I was navigating very poorly, which did not really detract from my joyful mood, but did make me feel like I needed to cut off course G and head back to the car so that people did not need to wait for me.

Thierry's map preparation is immaculate. He puts a white border around the numbers and the lines... he sets up a dotted line to indicate when you should start the interval and begin to look at the map before reaching the start triangle, naturally the circles and lines are cut very well. A feeling of luxury everytime you run one of his trainings.

Innebandy 45:00 [3]

Found a new work group of innebandy player. They play on Thursday, and there are a few people that are the same as in the last group I was in. This time we split into teams of 4 and played small sided games.

I pushed very hard, to the point of being a bit dizzy by the end in fact, trying to single-handedly have enough hustle for our whole team when we went up against the team of superstars. Fun!

Road run (Hill Intervals) 1:00:00 [3]

Hill Intervals with the club. Running at the castle is just so close to work, and that makes these intervals really convenient.

6x the long intervals up to the top and then down through the archway to finish. I wore my headlamp, which was probably unnecessary.

Ran the first 3 with Kajsa, which was fun, but shows that I may have lost some climbing speed. She's very strong though, and it was great to have someone to push with.

Impressed with the talent that Alex Carcas, a visiting orienteer from the UK hoping to move to Uppsala for a year, next year, has shown this week. Someone to watch!

orienteering (November Nights) 39:47 [4] 5.6 km (7:06 / km) +36m 6:53 / km

This was the first November Nights course (yes, inapt name for the October date of this particular race). 4 races, every other Wednesday, night training... because night training is fun and we all miss the onsdagsnatt that we used to do.

Cat set this course, and I wasn't sure I would have time to go, but in the end I biked over to Stenhagen and took the last free map. I forgot my SI, but that was okay as the the downloads computer was too cold and ran out of battery, so no one could download really.

I started out well, ignoring the extra thick vegetation in the white woods at the start. I got a bit lucky heading into control 2, as I had lost contact but Thierry was there punching the flag at just the right time. Then I got into a bit of pack running with a few other guys, notably Ulrik and Ander H, and we were back and forth through the middle of the course. In the end I had a clean line out to the trail and around on the way to the finish, which helped me finish ahead of Ulrik and Anders. Apart from the mistake on 8, I was satisfied with how my expectations and my execution matched up.

orienteering 1:30:00 [3]

The first Tisdagsbana of the winter, a bit of a break from tradition as we usually wait until after the winter training's premier. But we all love tisdagsbana so much that we were added in a few extra to the schedule.

I showed up late, and Niklas and I ran a bit of the course and then cut off some to join the lead pack. Ran in that group for a bit before deciding to go off on my own on the 13k cut off, but then I was a bit off the line and cold and wet, so I changed the plan and just ran a bit on the trails to get back to KG.

Nice to be out in the woods, a bit sad that it's already time for wet socks.

Strength (Rockgympa) 44:00 [3]

A new program for the winter season. Johan has outdone himself, and we had great music and some very tough exercises. We were all sweaty and gross by the end.

A good turn out, with 44 attending. We did a quick lap of introductions with a group question of who is cooler, superman or batman, and followed it up with a quick demonstration of the various exercises that we would do during the course of the rockgympa.

A few games of Innebandy to round it all out.
