| Perkiomen Trail - Arrived at the Valley Forge Betzwood area by 8:45 am and took the last parking space. Headed north on the Perkiomen rail trail and rode it to it's northern terminus at Green Lane park and back. The ride went through Collegeville, Schwenksville, and several DVOA maps (Fatlands, Evansburg, Green Lane). Lots of bikers, runners, and walkers out enjoying the nice morning. Some good variety including a rare (for a rail trail) 12% gade at Spring Mountain - first time I've ever used the granny gear on a rail trail. Even so, I had to walk the last pitch since my tires were spinning out on the gravel.
Stopped at Green Lane for a granola bar break and then for a caramel sundae in Schwenksville (despite the fact that it was only 10:30 am). No rain this time so my bike didn't get gritted up too badly - only needed a hose down when I got home. |

| North Central Rail Trail, MD - On the way back to Delaware, decided to stop at the village of Railroad to do the southern half of the rail trail. I rode the northern half last summer, getting caught in a thunderstorm on the return from York.
Today was not much different. I got a late start (due to sitting around watching Wimbledon before I left) and the weather was again threatening but still dry as I started. I made it to Moncton, MD when the skies really opened up. There is an old train station there which provided some nice cover from the rain. I waited about 20 minutes and it looked like the skies were brightening a bit. Instead of continuing south to the southern end of the rail trail at Ashland, though, I decided, I better turn around and head back to Railroad. The rain did not ease up (it actually intensified for about the next 5 miles). My clothes and bike were coated with a heavy layer of grit and sand from the wet conditions. I made it back to Railroad around 7 pm and then hit the road to return to Delaware. I stopped at a carwash before going home to hose down the bike and my gear. |
