Fair Hill NRMA, MD - Practice hike with pack from S. Appleton lot. There was an equestrian competition underway in the fields near the chapel when I passed through. Then I was able to take the westerly approach to the fairgrounds through the fields bordering Rt. 213. They have done quite a bit of work in that area over the past year as part of the upgrades being made to the racetrack area. They have constructed two ponds and regraded and re-sodded the entire racetrack. The track is now fully irrigated which explains the ponds as well as the new water tower at the top of the hill. I found a description of the improvements here:https://fairhillfoundation.org/
Fortunately the changes appear to be limited primarily to the racetrack area - much better than the proposal the state was considering about ten years ago to develop the whole area into the Maryland Horse Park.
In another positive development, the new Rt. 273 bridge across Big Elk Creek is now complete.
