Event: City2Surf

9 AM

Running (Mixed) warm up/down 7:00 [3] 1.3 km (5:23 / km) +55m 4:27 / km
ahr:158 max:175 slept:6.5 shoes: Inov-8 X-Talon 190

Orienteering race 1:25:09 [5] **** 10.9 km (7:49 / km) +245m 7:01 / km
ahr:173 max:190 (injured) shoes: Inov-8 X-Talon 190

Queensland Long Champs - 8.7km

After stuffing up #1 by over 3 minutes (no real plan, throwing myself into the gully, and being passed by Mat), managed to get things together and ran a pretty satisfying race, got into the terrain and was generally navigating well until towards the end when I got a bit sloppy. Compass still wasn't great, but was able to use contours and rock much more and was clean when I did.

Almost a quarter of the way into the race I had managed to nip into #4 before Mat and was running down hill towards #5 reading the map and went straight into one of the many ruined barbed wire fences we'd been warned about. And I did it in style - not much trousers left:
QLD champs damage

End result - many lacerations:
Barbed Wire - QLD Champs

Mat passed me again after that, and I didn't see him again until we were heading in opposite directions when I was heading to #15 which was a bit of a surprise. Put the foot down on the track run to #16 to ensure I stayed clear (fastest split) and caught Peter heading into the control, we were together until #18 where I pulled away to the finish.

Anyway, self-harm aside it was a really enjoyable course and I coped with the terrain far better than yesterday, although I was starting to cramp on the final couple of track legs into the finish.

Finished 3rd, 10 minutes down on Mark and 4 on James, with over 5 minutes of mistakes. Good day out.

Note

Brisbane is hot, my Orienteering and fitness is not.
1 PM

Running (Mixed) warm up/down 12:00 [3] 2.3 km (5:13 / km) +20m 5:00 / km
ahr:147 max:175 slept:7.0 shoes: Inov-8 X-Talon 190

Orienteering race 51:58 [5] 5.3 km (9:48 / km) +125m 8:46 / km
ahr:174 max:190 shoes: Inov-8 X-Talon 190

Queensland Middle Champs - 3.8km, 145m

Not a great run all in, struggling fitnesswise in the 'heat' (has been a while) and mentally just not in it, a few unlucky controls turning the wrong way but mainly just not accurate on the compass again.

Cold (first run in a thermal in this country!), wet, dark and rather miserable run around the streets and bush around Cremorne & Cammeray, but with some decent entertainment along the way.

No idea why I've never headed south out of work before, but took myself down through Brannan Park and Oyster Cove then round the lovely trails around Berry Island and back up Gore Cove. Nice trails, good views, sunshine - pleasant way to spend a lunchbreak. Beats the Southbank or Elephant & Castle.

3 head to head night micro-sprints with Andy, two at Ballast Point, one at Mort Bay, great stuff and tricky on a 1:1000 map.
Slow into it on the first but improved as it went on.
Made a mess of the second one, misreading map and then losing impetus & MPing.
Last one was quicker and more straightforward.
