Mount solitary loop from Katoomba. Long, tough day out, and the most demoralizing run I've had for a long long time but not really surprising given the last few weeks.
Apart from the detour round the scenic world walk, and my right glute hurting, the first hour was pleasant enough if hard work picking our way through the landslide, least we had a decent pace covering 9km ahead of the climb up to ruined castle. From there on it was pretty stop start, climbs were tough, as were the descents, and the flat offered little respite as the trails were tight and windy.
Views from ruined castle were incredible, as were those on the climb up mount solitary, but couldn't really find much rhythm on top, and the temps were creeping up. I ate the entire length of mt solitary but it didn't make much dent on my energy levels or ability to run later on.
With my glutes and dodgy ankles the descent off Mt Solitary took forever, and destroyed my legs, then the climb up from the river killed my willpower, so by 21km I was spent. From there to Katoomba it was all fire trails but I struggled on the downs and had to walk the ups, with the flat barely better. Pretty low at this point, respite when pouring water from river over head.
Both our wrong turns were probably my fault, at scenic world presuming we needed to head down to the valley floor (no real basis for this), then up to the giants staircase presuming the well worn unmarked track off ours was the shortcut we needed, when in fact it meant half an hour bush bashing up a hillside to the foot of the steps. Alas. Frustration.
Energy levels were ok and was feeling fine up the steps with end in sight, although 3&1/2 litres of liquid wasn't quite enough. The main issue was just legs not working for running, which was mainly down to not doing much in preceding weeks, but they managed the extra out and back to bring Ondrej water at the end. Should probably have done a proper warm down though.
