Great day out in the hills ticking off Australia's ten highest peaks (plus the next eight peaks or lumps over 2100m) in a loop from Charlotte's pass. Moving time around 7 hours or so, nice amount of climb greater than Kosci too!
Started with a beautiful sunrise but we were in thick mist not much more than an hour later as we climbed up from the blue lake to tick off little Twynam & Twynam, but this cleared as we hit the next unnamed peak west of those, and we had good views along the ridge for Carruthers Peak, Mounts Lee, Northcote & Clarke before heading off the main range for Mullers peak.
Then it was a nice excursion through rock fields to Alice Rawson Peak & Mount Townsend (far better a summit than Kosciuszko), before Abbott Peak and another unnamed one to the south before cutting across to the river to refill water, this was the worst bit of running for most of the day with spiky scrub in places.
Then it was back up onto the main range to summit Kosciuszko, where I'd just arrived before a hail storm blew through - on went all the waterproofs while I sheltered under some rocks and awaited the others. That passed swiftly, but coming off the unnamed peak to the east after Rawson's Pass the rain really settled in, which was shite on the slippy metal boardwalk, and then not much fun trudging towards Rams Head. I was fine when moving, but was having to stop more often to let the others catch up, and was getting pretty cold.
Everyone else was starting to suffer a bit too, so they decided to head back via Rams Head north, while Nicole and I pressed on to compete the loop taking in Rams Head where I got a thermal on and the full waterproofs, and we were soon moving along at a decent pace so warmed up again.
By the time we summited Rams Head north (possibly my favourite peak, quite a fun scramble from the west but an easy descent to the south) the sun was back out, then we had a good trod following the snow poles across the snowy river was good, and we were rattling out quick kms back to the car along the summit walk.
Great to spend a big long day running up hills, particularly without a big bag, and involving mainly fabulous off track running. Nutrition was almost spot on this week, couple of muesli bars, a clif bar & shots, some trail mix and dried fruit, plus a couple of small slices of pizza. Had I not lost a bag of sweets when a zip bust it would have been the perfect amount. Plenty of water available helped too.
Keen to come back sometime and do this quicker, plus the new AAA 50km course is two laps of the main range loop in both directions which would be a great race - maybe next year though. Bunch of photos from the day here
