Big Vee's Backyard (not quite) ultra

Was meant to be a 45km course which Vince had marked out (better than most trail races) around reclaimed trails, freshly cut singletrack, MTB trails, creeks, cliffs, caves and more, with some brutal pinchy ups and downs around the George's river and Michael Thomas creek near Kentlyn. As it was, his gps is whack and it was short, but a great day out nonetheless.

Nobody wanted to lead at the start so I ended up at the head of the masses (well, 17 of us) on the singletrack down to the river, then in a group of three on the climb out after picking up our egg, which we had to safely transport round the course for a point... Points were also available for taking a page from books along the way ala Barkleys, looking out for smiley faces around the course, and answering some quiz questions about the route and things seen in various places.

I sat behind the two Stevens through the next section, going past on a climb, and though I waited at the top for company they didn't want to lead so I ended up at the front and pulling away on the next climb around 6km. Missed a turn on an unmarked section and they were back in sight behind me when I got back on route, but after that I was on my own, only seeing them when the route doubled back so knew I had an almost 10 min lead at 12km.

Lovely rock hopping along the river and a nice climb up and round the squatters and nudist camps, then up old ford road (saw someone behind me which pushed me on, but they were pulling out early) before a fun descent to the creek, a scramble up another creek, and then onto fun windy mountain bike trails. Spot of firetrail and the realisation around 22km that the course looked short, with the 28km water point appearing at 24km, though I didn't see the water. Struggling a little on the firetrails and roads back to the river after about 26km but kept plugging along ok.

Wasn't moving too quickly through the return leg along the river, and a few crampy twinges on the final loop down to the river and up and over the spur, but once back on the firetrail I perked up again.

Met Vince near the finish and had 37km on my watch so he thought I'd missed something, I decided to do a little extra to try and get over 40 at least and did the first loop again. Once I'd done that, Steve came though to do the final loop but I couldn't face the climbs of that to get the full 45km distance so skipped joining him. Everyone else came up short too when they trucked in, but given how tough the course was they were quite glad!

Still, a cracking excursion, nice to run so many new trails and with folk again (albeit briefly) and hang out at the end. Looking forward to a future edition when Vince has cut even more new trails. While I didn't take home the prize plate (ironically, I was terrible at finding books), it did end up in our household as a good reminder of the day.

Exploring the rocky tops near camp and then round to Bonnum Pic. Some fun little scrambly bits and rock hopping, and super spectacular views in all directions. 0.3pp/km, first unknown people of the weekend, all around Bonnum Pic.

Back from Bonnum Pic, lovely open rocky tops, shame that the route from Ben hur has been heavily marked with pink tape and cairns through all the burnt out sections. That said, given the amount of impact a few folk not walking on tracks makes through the burnt and barren landscape it's probably a small price to pay. 0.33pp/km

Spot of rogaine nav practice following ridgelines out and back to Wanganderry walls proper - more open nature of the bush post fires makes it pretty straightforward. Generally good going with a few scrubby bits somehow surviving. Stunning views at the end but leisurely camp morning meant we couldn't explore as much as we'd have liked so towards Beloon pass will have to wait for another time. 0.125pp/km (people we were expecting to see however, nobody else in the area)
