Shotover Moonlight Marathon (moving time, race time was 7:22:55.

Wow, what an experience. Starting on the Shotover river near Coronet Peak in NZ, finishing at Moke Lake. Absolutely brutal, so many steep climbs and steep descents which trashed my quads.

The plan was to run this with my brother and his friend Alex. Didn't go quite to plan...Set off just going my pace and about 8km in got to the top of a hill and turned around to see them well behind, so stopped and waited 5min or so. Stayed with them for the next couple of km until a steep descent and lost them again for ages...could see them behind for a while but even though I was walking bits they weren't catching up.

This bit featured a scree downhill (very fun), 500m running in a river, and a ladder. Stopped after the ladder and took my shoes off to shake out the rocks from the scree - the others still didnt catch up so I ran on a bit then stopped to wait about 10min at about 18km

Ran with my bro from there to the next aid station at 22km, we had some food and drink there and then waited a while for Alex to turn up. After that we went on up the second massive climb (which actually was a bit crap because it was just a road slog) and I completely dropped them both. Got to the top of the hill at 30km, and waited a full 30min for them to turn up. Poor Conan was completely done, apologised a lot and told me he couldn't run any more and not to wait.

At this point I had (I thought) 12km and 90min to get under 7 hours so I thought that might be a good challenge and smashed myself down the big hill, and up and over and back down the last shorter but steep hill. But then I completely blew up! The last bit was along the river valley with about 30 river crossings (no joke) and I could barely move.

In the end it was 43.5km (I was very mad about this) and I was in no shape to go sub 7. Ah well, got through. Alex got a second wind and finished only about 30min after me, Conan got through but did about 8.10.
