Warm up before POM day 1. Today's arena was in a small adorable Portuguese town called Aldeia de Mata.

POM Day 1. Today was a middle distance. I really enjoyed the map and I did really well from controls 1-12 with maybe a small hesitation on #9 which was lower than I had expected. The terrain was really open and I felt like I was moving quickly and well.

Then on 12 - 13, I felt like I had a good plan - run up to the marked wall crossing, then aim across to the large rocks in the second gully. However I spent 3-4 minutes scrambling around in green around said large rocks before finding the control, much lower down and next to two very small rocks (I couldn't even say I actually saw them). Thought this control was a bit rubbish, not sure what I could have done differently.

I got caught by Ida Marie at this point and decided if I could hold onto her I might have a fast last section of the course. This bit me in the bum though because she ran right past 14 (and mispunched) and I didn't realise immediately and had to run back up the hill to the control.

Frustrating because it was such a good run at the beginning. Definitely thought I was on track for a 38-39 min run.

Warm up for the POM sprint. Very late at night by this point.

Orienteering race 12:43 [5] 2.8 km (4:33 / km)

POM Night Sprint. Pretty good run. Really no errors - lost a little time at the end because I ran all the way around the end of a wall instead of going through the archways (which were on the map, but so minuscule as to be almost invisible). Still a fair chunk of time off the leaders but I was happy with it.

Alter do Chao was a pretty cool town, not super difficult, just twisting cobbled streets. The end part in the park was dark and a little trickier. The assembly was at a castle which was very cool!

Jog around the Model maps. First impression - the terrain is super Aussie. I could have been in WA on one of the "Frazzle Rock Carnival" areas. Very open, with intricate boulder detail and a little bit of bracken / coffee bush / blackberries. Only odd / different mapping detail was the black line cliffs that were marked - often they were only half a metre high around areas of bare rock.

A long-ish run, went a bit shorter today because of a) yesterday, b) racing POM next weekend and c) got out of bed too late.

I intended to catch the tram to Malin Bridge and run up Loxley and around Damflask reservoir but I got up too late and ended up running from home. I ran down along the tram tracks along Infirmary Rd to Malin Bridge and then on to Loxley. Running on the road was crap but Loxley was pretty nice, I would say bits are as nice as Porter / Rivelin but other bits are just like abandoned industrial crap. I didn't get to Damflask, I was probably 1.5km short or so.

I was not feeling awesome today. Quite sore and reluctant, a bit of a shuffle. Better towards the end but still not amazing.
