Made a last minute decision to go EOD for the Aire Dales Weekend in the Yorkshire Dales. Today's race was on Attermire. Really cool terrain - all open moorland with areas of intricate limestone and corresponding contour detail. The first third/half of the course was a series of terrifying legs across open hillsides with nothing but a series of small depressions to guide you - predictably, I made a huge mistake on #2, where I stopped too early and then found it impossible to relocate. Lost maybe 6 minutes or even more.

The rest of the course went really well other than a wobble into #11 (I'd gone above the cliff and had to come back around down to it) and a general prissiness in going down some of the very rocky and steep hillsides.

Felt that I pushed quite hard (though it seems my HR data disagrees), and enjoyed it. Struggled a little physically in the huge tussocks of grass (fell over 4 times between #4 and #5) but I suppose everyone was in the same boat.

Anything but another run to Porter...went to Norfolk Park instead. Getting dark so much earlier now!

Running intervals 17:14 [5] 4.5 km (3:50 / km) +60m 3:35 / km
ahr:170 max:175

1km "steady" / 500 "float", 1.5km / 800, 2km. Felt tired and sluggish, as so often on Thursdays - struggled to get the HR to rise. Did this in Endcliffe Park instead of on the track, which was maybe a mistake - think the track would be both flatter and more motivating! Not toooo slow though so not too unhappy.

SYO social sprint race on The Edge. Took this at slightly above a jog, but had weary legs and no head at all. I wonder if orienteering fatigued is good practice or if I'm just practicing bad habits?

Jogging long 2:45:00 [3] 29.5 km (5:36 / km) +600m 5:05 / km
ahr:143 max:169

Long evening one. Route up Porter, across to Burbage edge via Lady Cannings and Ox Stones, along Stanage Edge, across to Redmires, down to Rivelin Dams and home via the A57. Excellent company from Kyhil and Tamsin for the Porter section.

This was OK except for the bit from Redmires to Rivelin Dams, which would be insane if it was light and dry but in the dark and wet it was suicidal. Walked most of it so unfortunately had a 5-10 min rest in the middle of the run.

Didn't intend to run back along the A57, had hoped to run in the Rivelin valley and maybe come back through the allotments, but by the time I got to the head of the Rivelin path it was far too dark (I'd forgotten a headlamp and had asked Kyhil to bring me one, but he'd forgotten too).

Distance, time and climb are approximate, watch went flat at about 2:36.

Jogging 1:15:35 [3] 13.39 km (5:39 / km) +231m 5:12 / km

Sadly, back down to earth in Sheff. Put this off for a while, wasn't feeling awesome after a day of travel, but in the end my legs weren't too bad and I was glad I did it. Ran from home over to Rivelin and back. Forgot a head torch in my rush to leave the house before my willpower deserted me - it was really dark in the valley! Summer has ended...

Note
(rest day)

After finishing yesterday, we threw our bikes in the car and drove in wet riding gear 4.5hrs back to Madrid in an attempt to get the hire car back before they closed at midnight. We actually decided we wouldn't make it after about 3hrs and stopped to change, but terrible recovery from a very hard ride. All I had to drink was a can of coke zero. Got into our accomm eventually (after some faffing to pick up keys and find a park) at 2am, so was feeling rubbish today.
