Orienteering race 53:46 [5] 4.7 km (11:26 / km) +225m 9:14 / km

World Cup Final Middle. Don't know the actual distance or climb, wasn't allowed to wear my Garmin again, and didn't have GPS today.

What a disaster of a run. I'm really disappointed with this, especially after yesterday. I had gained so much confidence, and I really lost it all again.

I started the course with the same philosophy as yesterday, slow and careful so I could speed up into it. Found 1 fine, avoided dying on some of the more horrendous rock holes. #2 is where it all came undone. Didn't have a real plan, didn't see the building on the edge of the circle at 1 which would have pointed me in the right direction, and drifted too far to the left. Hit the yellow and then ran back and forth across the slope twice before deciding to check where I had come out in the clearing. Lost 4 minutes.

Lost another minute at 3, climbed past the control and then had to drop back into it. Again, didn't have a real plan, and should have climbed up the creek to the right height.

The rest of the course was clean enough, but as I said I'd lost all confidence and bled time in slow decisions and hesitations. Didn't really make any more "mistakes", which is the only positive I could take away from it. Took the middle / left route to 5, which was slower, and went straight to 13, which was also slower.

Orienteering race 1:33:06 [5] 10.81 km (8:37 / km) +560m 6:50 / km

World Cup Final Long Distance. Not allowed to wear a Garmin, I took the distance from the GPS tracking and the climb was quoted in the bulletin.

Pretty happy with this run. I started perhaps a little too cautiously, and was quite slow on the downhill / cross contour legs from 1-4, but didn't make a mistake. I caught the girls starting 4 and 6 minutes ahead of me at 4 and perhaps hesitated slightly near 5 as I wasn't 100% sure I was on the right height.

Took the left / south route to 6 along the road and then climbed into the control. Hit it fairly cleanly, and hesitated a little above 7 but then saw the drinks table. Caught the girls starting 2 and 10 minutes ahead here.

Took the right route to 8 which in hindsight wasn't the best, the extremely steep section halfway along was very slow going and I actually slid down it on my bum. The control was also a bit more tricky from this side, though I found it well enough.

Out of 8, I took a very very long time to decide on the route to 9, and actually ran 150m towards the left route choice before changing my mind. Went right and took the smaller, higher narrow track rather than dropping down to the road. Figured I would rather climb into the control than drop 40 extremely steep contours, and I spoke to the course setter after the run who said the right route was faster. Caught up to Jas here.

Chose to climb through the green vegetation to 10 (slow choice) and for some reason crawl along the valley to 11 rather than run through the clearing. Managed to (just) run through the spectator loop (death), then hit 12 and 13 cleanly but messed up 14, not being sure of my height and struggling to read the rock which was mapped. Lost maybe 1min - 1min30.

Model event. Bit thicker here than the actual forest will be. Some cool contours and rock detail.
