Unfortunately Blue Tier was closed, so we just got the shuttle to the top of Atlas and did that. It was fun in parts, a bit difficult in others. Still very wet. Afterwards, we did Krushka's again, which is definitely my favourite track here.

2 x shuttles in the afternoon, went down Air Ya Garn both times. Good fun and improved a little but also got pretty tired.

Woooow what a drama filled day.

Our shuttle was cancelled because of the rain. So no Bay of Fires / St Helens riding for us. We decided to stick around Derby instead and do some of the trails we hadn't done yet. Dave, Pete, Kyhil and I climbed up Long Shadows to the shuttle drop off, and Dave and Pete went down Roxanne / Air Ya Garn while Kyhil and I did Return to Sender. It was rubbish, lots of bits outside my skill level combined with lots of trees down and debris on the track. Crashed once and grazed my knee.

Got to the bottom and had a lady yell at us to call an ambulance because a woman had collapsed. We called the ambulance and found out she'd actually fainted because she'd had the news that her husband (in Adelaide) had had a stroke.

While we were waiting for the ambulance (they had my phone number so thought I better not piss off) Pete found us and gave us the news that Dave had crashed really badly and had probably broken his collarbone / shoulder and possibly had a concussion. So Pete called an ambulance for Dave!

It the meantime, the fainting lady came good and I cancelled her ambulance. The ambulance turned up for Dave (took about an hour and a half) and gave him the green whistle and took him to Launnie. Turns out he had broken his colllarbone in two places!

After the ambulance took Dave away, Pete, Kyhil and I went back out and rode up the road (where the shuttle goes) 3 times. The first two times we did Air Ya Garn - which is a black run, but only because it has some big jumps / tabletops which you can get big air off (I did not). This was good fun but I still am too wussy to hold speed and it meant I couldn't get over a few things.

The last time we went down Flickety Sticks which was OK but I was exhausted and as a result had lost most of my confidence. I managed to crash again and smash a pedal really hard into my shin (leaving a good egg and a few gouges).

It literally POURED rain all night and all day until maybe 5.30pm, so I decided to go do some orienteering training instead (don't mind running in the wet as much). I had brought a few maps so chose one of the Littlechilds Creek ones and headed off with Kyhil.

Very rusty nav and many mistakes, also generally slow. It was really tough terrain for a lot of it, though I suspect I do need to harden up a little and run a few more of the bits I was walking. Also trying not to kill Kyhil who hasn't run in about a year. Classically, got stuck on one of the thick creeks at what was mapped as a gap but wasn't.

ahr:138 max:165

Second day in Derby. Today we started with Kruska's - climb and then very fun descent. All OK except maybe the very top of the climb which was tricky and rocky. Then Kyhil and I went and did The Great Race (terrible, really difficult) and Dambusters (really shit first 1/3 - 1/2, mediocre middle, awesome ending). Was tired by the end of Dambusters!

I feel like if these trails were elsewhere, most of the greens would be blues, and most of the blues would be blacks. I can't speak to the actual blacks, I haven't tried any yet.

Figured I better do some running...though I was super knackered! Did run up one of the blue trails which was fun (was late enough I figured no one would be riding) but a little sketchy in the fading light. Foot was still not 100% but OK.

ahr:141 max:166

First ride in Derby! We did Rusty Crusty, Axehead, Long Shadows, Flickety Sticks, Long Shadows again, Snygg and Kingswall.

Really awesome, probably Snygg (uphill) was a bit above my ability (probably uncleated on 1/3 of the obstacles) and Kingswall (downhill) was also a bit above (walked a few tough steep rocky features) but still very fun.

Derby is so beautiful, you are constantly just riding through enormous trees, ferns and mossy granite.
5 PM

Cycling 1:01:47 [3] 11.9 km (11.6 kph) +238m
ahr:133 max:158

Couldn't get enough, so went back out and did Rusty Crusty, Axehead, Rattler, Howler, Berms and Ferns and part of Deadly Bugger. Also went through the tunnel which was cool.

Stayed near Launceston last night with a cousin of Matt's. Her husband took us on a loop of his area which is allegedly the short loop that Richie Porte tacks on to the end of his standard epic ride! It was a really pretty loop, but I was feeling quite trash and the boys were pushing it pretty hard so I found this a struggle!

Time is a guess because I accidentally left my Garmin at their house and so can't upload.

Cycling 45:00 [2]

Jen and Marcus (who we are staying with) have a mountain bike track professionally built on their property. How epic is that! We did some loops of it, it was very fun. Practiced some berms and jumps.
