| Orienteering 47:30 [3] | ||
| ran an o course that Dad designed in the Blue Hills. Dad started a few minutes ahead of me, and I caught him around #5, but didn't really manage to shake him for the rest of the course. I was practicing the memory and simplification that I have been working on, but it's a lot harder to read a head when you're actually navigating at the same time (when we practice, dad and I trade off legs leading). Plus the ground is rocky and slippery (I fell 3 times and will have some nice buises tomorrow). But it went well. I'm not really fast at this point in my season, and so I have to remember to take it slow when racing this weekend. | ||

| trail run 10:00 [1] | ||
| Running to and from the start/finish. | ||
Monday Feb 26 | ||
| road run 40:00 [1] | ||
| Running to, from and down Westfield Street Hill | ||
| road run 14:17 [5] | ||
| Twice up Westfield street hill. Couldn't get the HR monitor to work at all the first time up and I think I ran too fast. I tied it on me tighter (knotting the elastic band) and then it was tight, but still only kind of worked the second time. Times: 700 and 7:17. | ||
| rowing machine 10:00 [2] | ||
Saturday Feb 24 | ||
| road run 2:12:00 [2] | ||
| a long run around Newton with Dad, Ross and JJ. JJ cut off after about an hour. It was quite cold when we started, but then we warmed up. | ||

Friday Feb 23 | ||
| Orienteering 51:40 [2] | ||
| Ran an o course around Hammond Pond with dad. The typical switching legs and memorizing as we go. It snowed last night and the ground is perfect. Dad calls it the styrofoam effect - the snow is soft, yet crunchy, and you sink into it just enough to get really good stick. Beautiful running! | ||
Thursday Feb 22 | ||
| road run 5:40 [2] | ||
| track drills - high knees, butt kicks, karoke (?) , backwards running. | ||
| road run 40:00 [2] | ||
| running around Dedham with dad, followed by about 50 minutes of me playing catching features... and getting lost :)
It's difficult to run around here. The trails are pretty mcuh too icy to run on (even with my spikes it's difficult (maybe because half my spikes are ripped out of my oshoes, I really should buy new ones)). The sidewalks aren't properly shoveled, and they are too icy as well, so you have to run in the street. But then there are big puddles inthe street and you get splashed. Dad and I checked out the track today in hopes that maybe it was sunny enough to melt - nope, all ice. That leaves running in the woods :) Which explains my increase in o training this month and decrease in trail running.
Wednesday Feb 21 | ||
| Orienteering 51:00 [2] | ||
| Did part of an o course in the Blue Hills. Memory-o again, with dad and I switching off legs. | ||
Tuesday Feb 20 | ||
| road run 55:00 [1] | ||
| ran over to Westfield Street hill with dad. This also includes the time we spent running back down the hill. | ||
| road run (hills) 21:00 [3] | ||
| ran 3 times up Westfield Street, supposedly at threshold. The hr monitor doesn't quite work well on me, so I tried to keep a steady pace, but I think the first two hills were a bit fast. I think my HR was between 180 and 184 for most of the way.
times: 7:10 7:06 7:20 arms especially were tired - probably from skiing. legs tired - probably from sledding :)
| Note | ||
| I've decided that I'm going to Umstead in a few weeks. I still have to work out my flight details but I am trying to arrive Thursday night, or Friday morning, and stay at the dorms.
Is anyone else arriving around then that could drive me to the dorms?? Or is anyone staying at the dorms that could squeeze me into their car to get to the meet?

Monday Feb 19 | ||
| lifting/strength (hill climbing, sledding) 1:00:00 [1] | ||
| Another 2 hours this morning of sledding :) We started out on the same track, and Lindsay built a new one, that soon was so trashed by people falling while going down that you couldn't really get down without falling out.
I woke up this morning, and everyone was complaining about how cold it was outside. I looked at the digital thermometer and it read 22 degrees F. Not so bad, until someone told me I had the decimal in teh wrong place... brrr! I had on 4 layers of pants, and 5 layers on top, gloves, mittens, two hats, three pairs of socks, boots, and a scarf. That made getting up out of the snow after you feel off your sled even more difficult!
Sunday Feb 18 | ||
| xc skiing 2:15:00 [2] | ||
| We skiied at Craftsbury Outdoor Center on Sunday. Great trails, and it wasn't too busy. I didn't bring my skate skis this weekend, so mostly classic skiing. | ||
| lifting/strength (hill climbing, sleeding) 1:00:00 [1] | ||
| Hill, Ross, Lindsay and I went sledding on a great hill at Mike and Vivien's for over 2 hours. Try climbing up hill in over 2 feet of snow - it's a workout! We finally packed down a track that we could sled down, and over 100 steps next to it that we could climb up. The track was soon very bumpy, for as soon as someone hit the snow harder than the person before them, we had a depression. As you went down the hill there were at least 3 times where your sled wasn't touching the snow. Then of course if you fell out of your sled, trying to get up in two feet of snow is difficult too! You try to put your hand down to help you up and it just goes into the snow without reaching the bottom! Everyone else was watching us from the house and giving up scores based on our runs. I got a 10+ for running Lindsay over :) | ||
Saturday Feb 17 | ||
| xc skiing 3:15:00 [2] | ||
| Mom, dad, Hill, Ross and I drve up to Vermot to go xc skiing this weekend! We met the Rick, Linda and Lindsay Worner at mike and Vivien Fritz at Beaver Brook Fram (remember relay champs in 2002?). We skiied on their land on Saturday - they have more than 20k of trails that Mike grooms, but because of the large snowfall earlier in the week (over 2 feet), only 5k were groomed. Hill, Ross and I set out to "track" another trail, and most of the time was spent battling our way off trail. It was an effort of 1 when you were following on the flat, and an effort of 3 when you were in front. and trying to get up the hills... well, let's just say it was hysterical watching us try :) But we succeeded in breaking trail on a nice loop that we then went back and skied (taking us much less than half the time!). | ||
Thursday Feb 15 | ||
| trail run 20:00 [2] | ||
| running back from across the map. We had to head home before we finished the course because I had to meet with a professor. | ||
| Orienteering 40:00 [2] | ||
| did more memory orienteering! I think I am getting better at quickly looking at a map, simplifying it, and then running ti from memory. I have a good visual picture in my head as I am running. Something that I need to fix though: I say to myself "ok, first right at the trail junction and then second stone wall on the left." But it's really a left and then a right! I manage to fix it as I am running, because the visual picture doens't match my words, but that could be dangerous to tell myself the wrong thing! | ||
Wednesday Feb 14 | ||
| road run 5:00 [2] | ||
| Snow Day today! Which was really nice, since I was thinking about taking a day off from work to catch up on grad school work. I left the house to go running around 1, and I thought it was snowing, but it was really hailing. I tried to run in it, but it was stinging my face. And I decided that running with my hands over my face wasn't the best form. Headed home, and then it started raining, so running wasn't that pleasing. | ||
| lifting/strength (shoveling) 30:00 [1] | ||
| and this was WET snow shoveling. I was basically shoveling slushy snow. It's heavy. After shoveling, I had trouble getting my hand to grip a pencil. My arms could be in pain tomorrow..... but it was worth it for the SNOW DAY! | ||
Tuesday Feb 13 | ||
| Orienteering 1:20:00 [1] | ||
| another memory-o in the Blue Hills with dad. This one was harder than previous ones, with the controls being in a more technical area. Also the map was a bit off in places. We did spend a fair amount of this time walking or standing around trying to figure out where we were. | ||
Monday Feb 12 | ||
| road run 45:00 [2] | ||
| to and from the track and also the jogging between 400s. | ||
| track workout 5:30 [5] | ||
| ran 4x400. My goal was to run them at 80, and I didn't quite make it. I ran 86, 81, 82, 81 with about 2 minutes of jogging rest between. It also may have not exactly 400 meters. The track I run at is locked up. So I ran in the fifth lane, stepping over two of the barriers (they were just ropes), but one barrier was too high and so I had to run on the inside of the track around it. Dad and I think it was about 400m give or take some. | ||

Sunday Feb 11 | ||
| trail run 2:10:00 [2] | ||
| a long trail run. Ran with Dad, Ross and Dean and then Dean cut off after about a half hour. The weather was beautiful, around freezing and sunny. | ||

Saturday Feb 10 | ||
| road run 39:00 [2] | ||
| ran around Newton after my day long class. Ross was supposed to come with me, but he conveniently had his only pair of tights in the washer. So I ran alone in the dark. At least I had my ipod to keep me company. I did about 15 minutes of warm up, 30 seconds to a minute jog between, and then about 15 minute cooldown. | ||
| C • hmmm... the ole 'tights in the... 10 | ||
| road run 21:00 [3] | ||
| ran 8x 3minutes, since that seems to be the thing to do :) I wasn't going too fast, maybe a bit slower than threshold? I was only going to do 5, but I got lost and wanted to run faster to try and figure out where I was. | ||
Friday Feb 9 | ||
| lifting/strength (pilates) 30:00 [1] | ||
| I rushed home from work and threw on clothes to do pilates. I have a class this weekend, so the training time is cut down. I could have gone running, but I felt that by the time i put on my running clothes and shoes and got out the door, it would have been quite a short run. Plus, it was cold :) | ||
Thursday Feb 8 | ||
| Orienteering 45:00 [3] | ||
| running old sprint courses around Houghton's Pond. Map memory again. This time memorizing 2 legs at once. | ||
| trail run 18:30 [2] | ||
| warm up and cool down. The warm up was around the pond, and that was cold! I did have on 3 shirts and my new hat. The three shirts did become warm after we were orienteering for awhile. | ||
Tuesday Feb 6 | ||
| road run 32:00 [2] | ||
| I went to a lecture, and so got home late. I went running around Newton with Ross. | ||
| road run 5:00 [4] | ||
| in the middle of the run did 5x 1min sprints. They were basically to keep warm and get the heart rate up for a bit. | ||
Monday Feb 5 | ||
| rowing machine 30:00 [2] | ||
| It was too cold and windy to think about running outside. I rowed in 10 minute intervals, since I couldn't sit there for 30 minutes straight. | ||
Sunday Feb 4 | ||
| Orienteering 35:00 [3] | ||
| my first adventure race... sort of :) It was a training. First we ran a short o course on an o map. Then the rest was biking rogaine. | ||
| road biking 3:15:00 [2] | ||
| the biking was done partially on roads and partially on trails. Biking on the trails was fine, not going too fast for the wind chill to really kill you. The roads were cold though! 20 degress with no wind chill, so much colder when biking. I had on 6 tops, 2 pairs of pants, 2 hats, plus my helmet, thick socks and toe warmers, 2 pairs of gloves. And it was all needed :) Biking in this weather is not something I plan on doing again though :) | ||
Friday Feb 2 | ||
| Orienteering 43:00 [2] | ||
| running around dedham, and up Westfield Street as a warm up. | ||
| road run 18:00 [3] | ||
| ran at threshold around Stoney Lea. It's a bit under 1200m and I was aiming for 4:48. I ran 4:36, 4:44, 4:41, 4:44. It was a good pace, fast but steady. 30 seconds of rest between. | ||
Thursday Feb 1 | ||
| trail run 15:00 [2] | ||
| trail run to warm up. We even stopped by the car afterwards so I could get rid of my hat. | ||
| Orienteering 50:00 [2] | ||
| Did another memory o course. Dad and I got more lost than usua, but it was fun. | ||
